With the advent of big data and the proliferation of multiple information channels, organizations must store, discover, access, and share massive volumes of traditional and new data sources. Data virtualization transcends the limitations of traditional data integration techniques such as ETL by delivering a simplified, unified, and integrated view of trusted business data.
Learn how you can:
• Conquer siloed data in the enterprise • Integrate all data sources and types • Cope with regulatory requirements • Deliver big data solutions that work • Take the pain out of cloud adoption • Drive digital transformation
I have yet to find a 'Dummies' book that I find comfortable to read; maybe it's just me, but I find that they can make the simplest of concepts tedious and overly complicated. This particular title does nothing to change my opinion.
It is essentially a 60+ page advert that points out some benefits, but almost none of the drawbacks, of data virtualization, as it sells its product via a series of 'reak world examples'. I stopped reading the examples after it became clear that they were too short and generic to actually serve their purpose and all seemed to end with the same set of business-speak benefits. The book was too short to go into any technical detail except where it helped to state some advantage of the approach. Save some time by reading the short summary of "things to know about data virtualization" on the last couple of pages.
This (free) ebook gives an excellent overview of what data virtualization is and - also important - what it is not. About 10 pages (called practical examples) are basically publicity for the book's sponsor Denodo, but that is a very small price to 'pay' - and still usefull to know. You learn what it is, why it is usefull or even necessary and its impact on enterprise strategic programs like SaaS, cloud, IoT, ... The shortcomings (in time to market and cost) of traditional ETL are pointed out compared to data virtualization. On the other hand, the shortcomings of data virtualization (understandbly) - are not really elaborated on. Great book that gives you in only 60 easily readibly and illustrated pages on overview on all you need to know to get started with virtualization, including an offer for a free Denodo/AWS trial.
