Superb read. Found this on my late Fathers bookcase and read the 1st few pages out of curiosity. Could not put this down as it was jam packed with fascinating information.

I loved this book because it was an engrossing mix of science and travelogue. The author's personal experiences stick with me and have helped to shape my view of deserts as an amazing landscape with mystery and magic instead of just a punishing inevitability. Deserts are a testament to the strength and ambition of life as well as its fragility. This is poignant read considering the increase of desertified areas on Earth, and perhaps gives some clue as to how humans will need to adapt to their changing landscape. It was also 'sciency' enough for an avid geographer/geologist/biologist. There is a good chapter on the basic evolution of climate. Don't expect flowery prose, but the reader can feel the dedication and respect the author has for these timeless lands as he and his wife travel through the remote Sahara to unravel some strange desert secrets.

Also, there's a bit in there about grass in death valley being able to absorb water through the tips of their leaves. I was interested in the science behind that, so I contacted the park, who replied that they hadn't heard of anything like that! Maybe Uwe knows something the rest of us don't. If you happen to read this, and know about this grass or whatever, please get in touch! Think about it, it would be like drinking water with your feet.

One of the best books I have ever read! I need to read it again to give a decent review as it has been too long ago that I read it.
