A Yorkshire Vet: The Next Chapter

Rate this book

The Yorkshire Vet embarks on this newest adventure treating the animals and their assorted owners across the Yorkshire Dales.

A New Chapter for a Yorkshire Vet follows Julian's veterinary stories and amusing anecdotes through his work as a mixed practice vet in North Yorkshire.

Julian has spent over twenty years working in Thirsk, literally following in the footsteps of James Herriot - the world-renowned vet and author.

This book follows Julian's passion for treating the animals under his care, be they cows, sheep, pigs, horses, alpacas or dogs and cats, along with the interesting and amusing characters who own and care for them. His voice, well known from his television work, rings out from the page - as does the humour, dedication and love for the animals.

A New Chapter for a Yorkshire Vet tracks Julian's work around the beautiful North York Moors and, more recently, around the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Dales from his new veterinary home in Boroughbridge, where the Herriot spirit lives on!

A Yorkshire Vet: The Next Chapter by Julian Norton is a fascinating look at the life of one of television’s well known and much loved vets.
Having watched The Yorkshire Vet on channel 5 since the first episode I am familiar with some of the names mentioned within the book. Putting faces to names helps the book really come to life.
Julian Norton writes as he speaks. His style is friendly, plain speaking and injected with humour and laughter. There were occasions I did laugh out loud – I shall never forget the incident with the flicking off of the fly near the eye!
Julian Norton has a heart not just for the animals he treats but also for the owners he meets. He realises the distress we pet owners can get into when our pets (cats in my case) are ill and he distributes kindness. He realises “the importance of spending time listening to the human behind the animal.”
I absolutely loved A Yorkshire Vet: The Next Chapter. I savoured all the stories. A gloomy, cold afternoon is made much brighter by picking up this book, grabbing a coffee and settling down for a read. This book injects light and life into the world. Absolutely perfect.

Julian is a great author (although he may not think so himself) and and even better vet. I have found it hard to put the book down and have read it the space of a couple of days, and I am not usually a reader. I have since ordered all of his other books but could quite easily pick this one up and read it all over again while I await his others arriving.

I feel like I know Julian personally as I have always followed all the Yorkshire vet episodes and feel having read his books even closer. He is obviously the type you feel you could click with straight away and have a pint with down the pub or a tot of whiskey or a glass of burgundy I gather he likes from reading his book.

Despite the challenges him and Anne have been faced with he always does his upmost and remains positive as the book will tell.

A fellow Yorkshire man myself it makes me proud to be from Yorkshire having such an inspirational role model like Julian.

Keep up the fantastic hard work you do Julian.

Best wishes

Another entertaining account of Julian Norton's experiences as a hardworking rural vet, in which we meet more unforgettable characters. There's Christopher Nibbles the hamster, and Finlay, his "wise beyond his years" owner; Neville, the not-so-wild-boar; wire-haired Pointer Quercus, the devourer of party poppers (would Quercus explode when the gunpowder met his stomach acid? frets Julian): Big Howard, the mighty Clydesdale with a poorly foot. Oh, and an alpaca sex clinic.

And of course, there are the inevitable Dad Jokes, for which Julian is renowned - in this instance, a seemingly endless stream of llama gags! The final total is reckoned to be somewhere around 20.

As ever, this book details the joys and hard work of a vet's life, but also the sheer graft of the farmer's life. It features many of the cases featured in the series, but there aren't always happy endings and Norton highlights the many difficulties and red tape faced by farmers. It also describes Norton's decision to set up in his own practice, unhappy when the surgery in Thirsk is taken over by a conglomerate which would put an end to the friendly, patient-focused atmosphere in which he'd always preferred to work.

As you would expect, the cases described run the gamut of experience: uplifting, tragic, initially baffling, emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking. Reading about the owners and their love for their animals can be enormously touching and heartwarming: just the thing for cold winter days.

***SPOILER***

I love Julian, and he's excellent at what he does: but if a potential minor disaster is going to happen, then it's going to happen to Julian, usually accompanied by 'comedy' music - although thankfully, nothing quite on the scale of what happens to Mr Chinnery, the hapless vet from The League of Gentlemen!

However, there's a wonderfully ghoulish tale Norton relates of an earlier veterinary practitioner in his new base of Boroughbridge which would've been much appreciated by Jeremy Dyson, Reese Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton, and Mark Gatiss, and could easily have come from Royston Vesey.

Thomas Secker ran a veterinary practice in the town in 1902, where he made a lot of his remedies and treatments himself. On the occasion in question, he was making a horse medication from chlorate of potash, iron, and sulphur.

What effect this mixture would've had on a horse is unclear - but it caused an explosion that blew out all of the windows in the building and destroyed all of the furniture. It also blew off Secker's arm and part of his leg, and an unsuccessful attempt was made to save his life by amputating the whole leg on his surgery's operating table.

In 1942, Norton's future colleague Gordon Rae joined the Boroughbridge practice. When he started making renovations to the building, he decided to open up the bricked-up fireplace in one of the rooms. As he started removing the bricks, along with the soot and brick dust that fell out, so did Mr Secker's well-preserved, blown-off arm - and the most macabre aspect of this was that Secker's hand was still clutching his pipe!* (* Allegedly...)

I have read all of Julian's previous books and have enjoyed them all. In this he explains the reasons for leaving Skeldale and embarking on a new job at Rae, Bean & Partners in Boroughbridge. I admire his honesty and his desire to stick to his principles as this wasn't an easy thing to do. Luckily he has fitted in well and he is also continuing with 'The Yorkshire Vet' series as the producers were keen for this to happen and his new employers were very accommodating. I love his enthusiasm and dedication to his job and it's a delight to read about the variety of cases that come his way. He has a great conversational style of writing which draws the reader in and also, importantly a much needed sense of humour and optimism.

What a fabulous book!
If you’re a fan of The Yorkshire Vet, Julian Norton or indeed farming/veterinary stories this is the book for you.
It’s such an easy read, flows well and has ups and downs like any good read.
The book, even though Julian is in a new practice, has favourites from The Yorkshire Vet including Mr and Mrs Green and the Nicholson family at Cannon Hall Farm.
I’ve already downloaded more books of Julian’s and can’t wait to read them!

As always, Julian's book is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. He makes me feel as if I know
his customers and patients! I do like the fact that Julian doesn't dwell on the sad stories, but gets right back out there with the successful ones. He has a fabulous sense of humour (I'm sure much needed for a Vet) and, at times, his books make me laugh out loud. His books are as good as a tonic.

A new begining.

I really enjoyed this book. Julian is an excellent writer and his love of his life as a vet is clearly demonstrated in this book. He does not hide his distress about leaving Skeldale or his reasons for doing so. I admire his honesty and his principles. An excellent read and recommended to all lovers of vet books and country life.

I love watching The Yorkshire vet on TV, so to have books as an accompaniment is just wonderful. Many of the characters that Julian describes have featured in the series so I can visualise them. I love Julian’s honest account of veterinary life, the ups and downs. It is always a great joy to read his books.

This is the second book linked to the Yorkshire Vet that I have read and I really enjoyed the snapshot into the life of a vet. It was interesting reading a different perspective especially the way he described foot and mouth. and I love the format of this book there is something about the lettering that I just adored.

A lovely read

I have enjoyed reading about Julian's life as a vet . It sounds like he has 36 hours in his days. I watch him on the 'tele' and some of the stories relate to those I have seen with extra detail.
I wonder how he has been managing in lockdown?

Didn’t really finish it, but couldn’t without a way to remove it from “Currently Reading”. I’m sure it will speak to a lot of readers, unfortunately not me, bit too twee
