Bridgers #5

The Trial of Extinction

Rate this book
Annihilation has a way of following some people.

Infinity and Desmond are bridgers, sworn to protect travelers to alternate versions of Earth. But now their own Earth has been destroyed, and they have a new task—protecting a small community of fellow refugees who managed to escape to a world teeming with giant arthropods. Stranded there, they’ve gradually managed to etch out a fulfilling existence. But it seems nothing good can ever last.

Infinity and Desmond’s hopes of living out their lives in peace are shattered when their old friend Armando inexplicably bridges to their world. Armando’s arrival triggers a devastating series of events and forces the bridgers and their fellow refugees to leave their new home. After narrowly escaping, they find themselves entangled in a cruel game, a trial to decide humankind’s worth. The rules of the game are unclear, but the stakes are high—the annihilation of billions of people.

Caught up in an impossible dilemma, on a world populated by extraordinary sentient creatures, Infinity and Desmond discover the limits of what they are willing to do for their species—and for each other.

Don't miss this fifth book in the thrilling science fiction Bridgers series!

Captivating and terrific books that are scintillating! Stan C. Smith has once again totally snagged me! An explosive and visceral premise with the most terrifying and original scenarios. The shocking and exhilarating new installment had me turning the pages late into the night. Mr. Smith has cleverly surrounded his protagonist withbelievable characters, providing a powerful continuity to each paragraph, extraordinary detail, and a tension that grows until the climactic end. A tour-de-force...one of the scariest and bleakest tales I can remember. I already want to read book #6!
I received an early version of this book from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.

At the end of the last book, the human colony that had bridged to the arthropod world seemed to have settled in, made peace and accommodations with the planet’s original intelligent species – the hive minds – and were on their way to creating a new human civilisation – all-be-it at a very low technological level. The colonists were so settled, that when Armando offered them the opportunity to bridge out to a human-run and technologically advanced Earth II similar to their original Earth, most of the colonist decide to stay. Infinity, Desmond and Gideon agree to go with Armando when he returns, to help him locate and, if necessary, rescue any of the other groups of colonists bridged out from the collapsing Earth.
But, in the hours that Armando has left them to make up their minds – all hell breaks loose. The seismic activity on the old Earth was nothing compared to what Infinity and the colonists were experiencing now. Waves and waves of earth sweeping across the landscape, earthquakes of increasing intensity throwing bedrock into the air and smashing the framework mounds – including the colonists’ new home. This Earth too, was in its death throes. The only solution is to all head to the bridging site, and hope that Armando arrives to save them, before it is too late.
They think at first that Armando’s bridging to the arthropod Earth has brought about its destruction, but then notice a large artificial green cone next to the bridging site. Three aliens (nicknamed Kitty, Tigger and Teddy), who miraculously appear in the bridging facility of Earth II, confirm that the destruction was intentional. The humans (from both Earths) are to be put on trial for not following the ‘rules’ and ‘protocols’ for using bridging technology. Ignorance is no defence. Any and all worlds bridged to (or from!) by groups flouting the rules will be destroyed. In case anyone is in doubt, there are already large green cones appearing on Earth II. To prove that they are worthy to live, the humans must show that they understand the rules (which are not fully explained) and that, by their actions, will live up to the spirit of those same rules. To do this, Infinity, Desmond, Gideon and a squad of Earth II marines are transported to a new world with multiple sentient species, where Kitty will observe their actions and interactions with the inhabitants: “You will show us that we should give you consequences. Or you will show us that we should not give you consequences”.
The group (and with them humanity) is on trial, but they have no idea what they are expected to do to avoid the ‘consequences’ of oblivion. Should they make friends with the inhabitants of the new planet? If so, which ones? Can they (should they) defend themselves? Does the survival of humanity trump the survival of any (every?) other species? WHAT DOES KITTY WANT?
I remember long ago reading a SciFi book (can’t remember the name), where there were aliens watching human evolution. If we had developed interstellar travel BEFORE maturing sufficiently to control our nuclear weapons and aggressive tendencies, then Earth would be annihilated – to protect the rest of the universe. This book seems to be running along similar lines.
For several centuries now, our technological advance has outstripped our environmental and sociological planning. Our planet is polluted, over-crowded, frequently violent, very possibly dying. Should we be allowed to import this destructive culture to other planets? Or to other Earths in the multiverse? The problem in this book, though, is not pollution nor climate change, but the spreading of bridging technology. How will Infinity and Desmond deal with this dilemma?
As always, there is so much to think about with this book. But, aside from the philosophy, this is also an enthrallingly fast-paced adventure story, with death and destruction, friendship and sacrifice. Infinity and Desmond are such brilliant characters – ones that you never want to see fail. The different sentient species in the book all have their own cultures, fears, desires and needs. What would you do and who would you save if in Infinity’s shoes?

There are lemurs! Scary lemurs!
Wow. I wasn't expecting that! The author took the story in an unexpected direction, and yet it worked so well. A new dilemma, with some very advanced but also very weird aliens, and a game to which our Bridgers do not know the rules.
Then a completely new world, with lemurs, scary ones and nice ones. Those of us who receive the author's newsletter may have been able to guess at this, but probably not quite how the author has changed lemurs. Read the book and find out!
As usual, plenty of twists and turns and Infinity kicking ass as usual. Even if it is lemur ass. Don't worry, it wasn't a nice one!
Suffice to say this is not the kind of book where you can predict what is going to happen nor guess the ending, thank goodness. The characters are great, well developed and the book is, as usual, well written. It could be read alone but you would benefit greatly from having read the previous ones.
I cannot recommend this book or this series highly enough. If you like very original, interesting stories with a great heroine, then you should read this!

I wasn’t sure where Stan could go after Bridgers 4, but this blew any expectations out of the water. New tech, more questions and some unexpected connections. Fabulous storyline, interesting characters and I can’t wait now to see what will happen in #6!!

I received this book as part of the Bridgers 4-6 boxed set. I'm reviewing the boxed set books individually instead of reviewing the two box sets so I can get proper credit toward my Goodreads book challenge and also maybe help more readers discover this amazing series. This has been one of my favorite book series ever and book 5 "The Trial of Extinction" did not disappoint! This book made me more nervous than the other books in the series so far. Its funny how that happens with some books and I don't usually know why. Infinity has encountered cruel beings in other books but those beings didn't seem quite as intelligent as the lemurs in this book. Perhaps its because the city lemurs reminded me of humans with their sport hunting of other intelligent species. Or, maybe its because the city lemurs had great wealth and technology but still tolerated great poverty just like humans in our world. I guess its the sign of a good suspense writer when they can ramp up your emotions like that. I'm glad the nervousness is over now but can't say I'm glad to be done with the book because I truly don't want this series to end. Also, I really enjoy the author's notes at the end of these books. The notes give you a glimpse into the creative process and what's coming in the future. I hope everyone enjoys this series as much as I have!

The Bridgers 5 was the best of them all. The characters were the same and you knew what they would do if you had read the other books. Stan is a super writer and makes the words come to life in your mind. If I could, I would give it 6 stars. There is not much left to say except that I know you will enjoy this book. It would help if you read the full series from start to finish.

Great story; excellent finale to the series (or is it really the finale?) Keeps you breathlessly on the edge of your seat! An advanced species is not happy with the new bridging technique Armando developed & punishes worlds with extreme prejudice. Can Infinity and Desmond save the world this time?

Great story with very good character's. Desmond and Infinity are about to return to the new earth.
But things don't go as planned. There are new aliens to meet and a very exciting adventure awaiting them. Definitely would recommend this story

As much as I enjoyed the first 4 stories, this 5th story I was just plain disappointed. I'm not sure why but the writing became mechanical and the main characters dialog just a bit to cheesy. I'm still enjoying the premise of the series, but this 5th plot was just a dud.

If you’ve read this series from the start like I have, getting to book five of the six was always going to bring a lot of excitement and anticipation. Where would Stan C Smith take the story next? Could it be anywhere near as good as what had come before? That was all before I’d even considered what would happen to change the bridgers new life from book four, which seemed finally to have settled. When I started reading this book I soon got answers to a lot of those questions and wow did the author do a great job. This series has been fantastic up to this point and this is at the same high standards. I hate spoilers and if you’re thinking of reading it you’ve likely read the blurb. So what can I say? Well, don’t start the series here as there’s a lot of great storytelling that leads to this point. This particular book is brilliantly written, fast paced and most importantly imaginative. This series delivers that illusive something we all want to read and that’s new and original stories. It’s all of those things as well as easy reading and addictive so give yourself a treat and read this, or anything else by this author, and prepare to be blown away. Naturally I highly recommend this book too.

The Trial of Extinction
Bridgers #5
Sci-Fi

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

• ᴛʀɪᴀʟꜱ • ʀᴀᴄᴇ ᴀɢᴀɪɴꜱᴛ ᴛɪᴍᴇ • ꜰɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ •

This was a great addition to the series. Some answers are finally given, there are more interactions with other sentient and intelligent creatures and the fighting scenes were intense.

The pacing was just right and every time Infinity, Desmond and the rest of the group tried to complete the mystery trial set by Kitty, something else would happen to throw a spanner in the works.

I really liked the characters. It's sweet how Desmond, Infinity, Gideon and some of the others now consider themselves a small family and they'll stop at nothing to protect each other.

The ending was good, however I suspect that not everything is as it seems on the new bridging location/universe. I think Kitty may have mislead the characters.

I got this book as part of a box set and the review below has been repeated as part of the review of that set.

As per the book's title, the humans are indeed undergoing a trial, this one having fatal consequences if things go wrong. Aliens have put the humans in a balance, so to speak, and they have to prove themselves worthy of saving otherwise they face extinction. But the humans do not know what is expected of them in order to survive and this can only be found out by trial and error.

This was another exciting read in the series and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Penultimate Alt World Adventure Brings 'em Back Alive

This is really an excellent series for fans of older, classic style science fiction. Recurring characters struggle through survival stints on planets both destructive and relatively benign, searching for safe harbors for the human remnants of planet 🌎. Well written and imaginatively conceived aliens and planet scapes. Escapism in the best sense of the word.

The penultimate book in the series. The main story takes place over a 24 hour period and the book starts off with a bang.
We discover that there are “consequences” to bridging and the very fate of all humanity on every colony world now comes down to a trial that Infinity and company have to complete. What are the rules to the trial? Who knows....

Back in the swing

After being disappointed with the previous two books in the series, I am glad I pressed on. Smith has got back in stride with this one. It's fast paced, full of action and twists. We've also got personal and moral dilemmas to conflict us as a reader. I raced through this instalment eager to see how the events unfolded, and whether or not they could be brought to a satisfying conclusion. I am now looking forward to the next book

The style of writing was weird and different. The chapters were much longer than the previous books.

The story was a bit far fetched as far as how complicated the technology is versus the “people” protecting it or species on other planets. Tension and love interest was still there, but it left a lot wanting

A trial to save the current world

A test to save the current world Armando had found. Terrifying "lemur " like creatures . Hunt for honor fun and wealth. How would this end.

Good

Good but not my favorite adventure. However the story does serve the purpose of moving the point of the story towards its conclusion.

Earth's demise occurred as an after-effect of humans discovering and using alien technology from those they called the Outlanders. The technology allowed earth inhabitants to bridge (i.e., transport) to alternate but parallel earths. For some reason, however, the adverse effect of the planet's eventual destruction was never revealed to them until it was too late. Billions of earth's inhabitants died with the planet's demise. However, thousands were saved when they bridged to an inhabitable alternate earths.

Infinity, Desmond, her partner and lover, and twenty of earth survivors are now pleasantly
living on an alternate earth for over a year now. However, it appears that this planet is beginning to collapse like their home planet earth did. As the devastation (tornadoes, wild storms with winds able to knock people down) all of the group continues a trek to a bridging site - the place where came to this planet. Then they bridge to another alternate earth.

Almost immediately, a group of three off-world species arrive. Their representative, a female they call Kitty, tells everyone that they earthlings had violated a rule imposed by the Outlanders and the they are here to give "consequences" for their actions. Their meaning? - is the destruction of all inhabitants on their planet.

After a short discussion, the earthlings convinced Kitty to give them a test; if they past the test, then all will be saved. If no, it's goodbye to all! So Kitty bridges Infinity, Desmond, a few civilians, and a squad of armed marine escorts to another alternate earth. Then things get very surreal as they immediately find members of what appear to be intelligent new species approaching them.

Follow Infinity, Desmond, and the others as they do their best to convince Kitty and her friends that humans are worthy enough to remain alive!

An unexpected twist in this engrossing series.

Read all of the Bridgers books in series order.

The book starts out with a horrific scene of violence imposed on the main characters as their world suffers catastrophic physical disasters. And there are situations where humans experience severe physical injury. None of them are gratuitous, and they have legitimate roles as the story moves ahead.
This novel invokes much more serious challenges to moral decisions than the preceding ones. And in some cases, the actions are not based on human morality and understanding, but on alien thinking processes that are radically different. It really challenges the reader to try and understand decisions made by aliens and how they might have come to be as a result of the development of an alien culture.
Stan C. Smith continues to stretch his imagination, and keeps it grounded on rules and logic that he makes clear as he goes along. And I cannot think of a single other author who tells a story the way he does. There have been books written to help new readers make reading decisions by providing a “Writes like…” reference to each one. “Writes like Stephen King.” “Writes like Tom Clancy”. It may be a long time before the authors of such books can come up with the name of an author who “… writes like Stan C. Smith”.
Five stars because I have enjoyed every book I have read by Stan C. Smith, and will continue to purchase his books, confident that I will, again, get to fully enjoy what he has written.

What an adventure!
This fantastic, unique and immersive series is quite unlike anything else around - and all the better for that.
Kudos to the Author for having the breath and richness of imagination to create such a world and universal timelines with an original plot that has been carefully thought out and one that takes the reader on an incredible journey.
Thrilling, exciting introduction to new beings and species, the story is presented in such a way where turning a page becomes instant - you never know where the plot is going with the well executed unpredictable twists.
The development of the characters is so detailed and complete that you feel you have known them all your life. Infinity is still strong and determined as ever, and with her partner, their friend Gideon and team of marines face a different trial. Can humanity be saved from extinction?
Stan C. Smith has created an utterly original lush and cohesive series inhabited by different, vivid multi-dimensional characters that we have come to care about, (even minor ones) all the more so as the plot unfolds.
Intricately woven where you cannot predict what will happen, why it will happen or how it will happen holds the tension for quite a while as you follow along with the story in this non-stop, fast paced, action packed adventure.
I look forward to reading the sixth and final book in the series.
Recommended!

The author’s love of nature and vivid imagination is what makes his books so interesting. You never know what familiar creature will be transformed into either a startling friend or foe – each depicting an aspect of human nature that may be positive or negative depending upon your own perspective. Thus, Bridgers 5 raises a critical question: Do all cultures deserve to survive?

The surviving colonists from an alternate version of earth are once again faced with devastation, combat and the unknown. Different alternate worlds have different capabilities and life styles. Is independence, balance and peace even achievable? If you like well-written, futuristic, wildly adventurous and thought-provoking novels, then, you will enjoy taking the journey with these Bridgers.

Is this the final chapter? Only Stan C. Smith knows but he does leave the door open to more interesting stories and characters.

I received an ARC and this is my honest and voluntary review.

From the first sentence of Bridgers 5: The Trial of Exctinction you're on a bullet train of action and suspense that doesn't stop racing along until the very last page. Infinity, Desmond and a select few others are in a fight to save their newest world and everyone on it from extinction. In order to do this, they must prove to a new race of creatures that they do not intend to use the bridging knowledge unwisely. But playing by this races rules is a puzzle because Infinity and Desmond have no idea what "unwisely" means to them. And, too, after being bridged to another alien world which threatens their lives yet again, how do they survive in this world and prove their home world deserves to survive? It's a race against time without an instruction manual and a seemingly blood thirsty puppet master pulling the strings!! For Stan Smith fans this is a must read. For new readers, DEFINITELY read this series from book 1...you don't want to miss ANYTHING!!
