Seeking Asylum #2

The Traitor and the Fighter

Rate this book
Kai
I’d sworn I’d never be part of the Chromes gang again or let Sawyer, their leader, control me once more. Yet an impossible choice has me returning to the crime-ridden city of Asylum, where I’m faced with James, the man I was hoping never to see again.

I’ve always thought that James was nothing more than a mindless fighter that Sawyer controls, but then why am I drawn to him? Why is it as we spend more time with each other that I start to realize there are hidden depths to the man behind that cold facade he wears? I know I need to stay focused, do my job, and get out of Asylum, but I can’t leave James behind. And how can I manage to do any of that when Sawyer is breathing down our necks? One simple mistake would be enough to ruin the bond that has started to form between us.

James
I’ve given up on looking for a better life and become resigned to doing what Sawyer asks, but the hatred I feel for the man is beginning to overflow. When Kai returns, I’m initially filled with disbelief. He had it all, and when he had a chance to stay away, he came back. At first, I find myself irritated by his presence, but maybe that isn’t the only emotion I’m feeling when he’s around.

For the first time in my life, there’s someone who cares about me—someone who will notice if I’m gone—and it makes me want to fight harder than I’ve ever fought before. It makes me want to protect him from the sickness of this city. And before long, I realize that I’ll do anything for this man I once disliked. Because I’ve found someone to love and Sawyer isn’t going to take that away from me.

The Traitor and the Liar is 104k words of enemies-to-lovers, poorly chosen safe words, a traitor who is fighting for what is right, a fighter who won’t be stopped, a misunderstood dog who might try to eat a few people along the way, and a love that overcomes even the darkest circumstances.

The first half of this runs concurrently with Sin and Eastyn’s story. And yes The Sinner and the Liar needs to be read first. Otherwise you’ll miss out on so much.

James we know from Sinner. Kai is new.

So like I said the first half of this is the story from the other side. James is Sawyer’s second. He seems cold, shutoff and lethal. But is there more to him than that?

Kai is the one that got away.
He got out of Asylum. He escaped the Chromes and Sawyer. Something that has never been done before. Along with his sister Nina they escaped to Haven.

Life in Haven is not easy. No one is interested in employing an ex Chrome member. So work is hard to come by and the pay is terrible. With his sister terminally ill things are not looking good. There’s no way they can afford the operation she needs. So Kai is left watching her get one step closer to death with every day that passes.

Kai is offered a deal. A deal that has him heading back to Asylum. The Chromes, Sawyer and James.

Tension is high with his return. But the attraction between Kai and James is too much to ignore.

This is another great read. It’s a little darker than my usual but proves to be compulsive reading.

I’m assuming (with fingers firmly crossed) that Ian is next.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

The Traitor and the Fighter is the second book in Alice Winters Seeking Asylum series. While the relationship between Kai and James mostly stands alone, this book overlaps in timeline with the first book for the majority of the story. It gives us a chance to see a lot of events from a new POV, and we get a lot of great insight that helps illuminate things that have been going on. But reading this book first will definitely spoil some key elements of The Sinner and the Liar, so I’d only start here if you don’t plan to read the first book.

This series is definitely darker than Winters’ usual work and there is a nice gritty intensity the story. It is filled with violence and we see and hear about a lot of awful things that go on.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

This was so bad and meh I won't even going to review it. I love alice winters but she definitely doesn't belong in the dark romance community.

A good follow up to The Sinner and the Liar. Part of the storyline runs concurrently with that book, and we get to see some events from a different POV.

This is a darker series than the author's other ones and the violence is graphic, but there is still enough banter and humor to offset the tension. Kai and James are great together and I'll be looking forward to the next one in the series.

Please don't read this book before reading The Sinner and the Liar, the first book in the Seeking Asylum series. I say this as someone who DID read book one first, and I honestly think you would be doing yourself and this book a great disservice by reading them out of order. Not only that, but there are some aspects of this book that will make more sense if you have read TSATL first, because the events are happening during the same time frame.

Having said that...

This book was excellent. Please do not confuse this series with Ms. Winters' other, more lighthearted rom-coms. This book (and series) takes the reader to the darker side of humanity in its dystopian world. These people are living in the remains of the devastation caused by WWIII. Asylum is a city/country full of every vice imaginable, with violence, prostitution, drugs, trafficking, and murder so common that some citizens just accept it as their lot in life. On the other side of the wall lies Haven, the more civilized and law abiding society. If you are lucky enough to get through the border, you never look back... Unless you have no choice.

Kai was lucky. He somehow managed to get away from the cruel ruling gang in Asylum, the Chromes, and bring his sick sister to Haven. Unfortunately, just because you are able to escape from the Chromes, it doesn't mean they can't still ruin your lives, even without trying. When Kai is given an impossible choice, he makes the only decision possible. He somehow has to return to Asylum, and live through it. Escaping from Sawyar's madness, as the leader of the Chromes, was next to impossible. Now, Kai must face Sawyer as a traitor and hope to survive.

James is Sawyar's Second, and though he follows orders and appears cold and heartless, he is never able to make Sawyer happy. When Kai returns and is not only allowed to live, but welcomed back, James's anger and resentment only grows. Of course, Sawyer finds a way to exploit this, and James is immediately tied to Kai.

Aside from the constant feeling that something is about to happen, the banter between James and Kai was extremely entertaining. With Kai's happy demeanor, and James's dry and constant attempts at emotionless replies, it brought a little lightness to the otherwise dark world they traverse.

The political intrigues that weaved through TSATL are downplayed in this story. Instead, the focus is more on the business side of things and what steps are being taken by players both outside Asylum's walls and within. There is still plenty of action and suspense, and danger lurks behind every word spoken. But, IMO, this book wasn't quite as dark as TSATL, at least not in the same ways. We see a different viewpoint of events from book one, which was quite interesting, and the plot twists and turns kept me completely enthralled. Of course, there was the matter of some seriously hot sexy times mixed in throughout the book; in fact, there was more focus on the relationship than I expected. I guess after reading Sin's story, this one was kind of...sweet...in a somewhat sadistic kind of way.

I often worried about the decision Kai had made, but in the end it worked out better than I expected. James and Kai are finally getting to experience a different way of thinking, and it seems to suit them both just fine. And, after all the action, danger, suspicion, and suspense calms down, Kai and James are starting their new lives with what I believe is a happily ever after.

I do hope to get a story about Ian sometime. But, I'll leave the story telling to Ms. Winters, as she does it so much better than me.

Oh! Oh! Oh! I forgot about Cerberus! As is becoming a theme in Winters' books, it would be remiss if I didn't mention the sweet, misunderstood...demon dog.

Happy reading!

WOW that was intense ! Cruelty was certainly a strong factor in this episode and while James came across as an asshole, he realty was a tortured and abused soul. Kai has all the love despite being a highly skilled hitman and slowly rebuilt trust with James. It was hard to read at times but I loved the evolving storyline ❤️

If I ever thought that The Sinner and the Liar was the maximum of Alice Winters' ability to write raw and gritty, she proved me wrong. That book was nothing compared to 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿,because she took the dark and grim to a whole new level.

I spend the entire time with goosebumps on my skin, scared for James and Kai. I can't even begin to imagine what it could be like to live at the whims of a lunatic. They're powerless and without choices and I felt their constant fear as my own, always expecting the worst, knowing the next minute could have them end up in pain or even dead.

I loved the way they relied on each other, going from enemies to being each other's support. Broken and damaged, afraid of showing feelings and yet so brave to trust one another. It's not easy in the world they're living in, and it was beautiful to watch them slowly take down their defences and allow themselves to fall in love.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 kept me on edge. It's a thrilling and engaging story, packed with violence, danger and also highly emotional. I liked the way for a bit it ran parallel with The Sinner, seeing the events from the first book from another side and meeting Sin and Eastyn again. And then James and Kai leave to forge their own future, because,in a dark world of lost dreams, they have found hope, happiness and love.

Thank you, Alice Winters, for another awesome book.

Just like the first book in this series - this book sucked me right in. The first half of this book runs concurrently with the first book in the series so I recommend reading it first. We get to see those events from a different POV and it doesn't feel repetitive. We met James in the previous book and although he comes across as cold and hard we find out in this book that there is a lot more to James. Kai is the other MC in this book and I liked him a lot as well. The world in this series is dark and gritty and the humor isn't quite as in your face as some of Alice Winters' other books but still there. I am definitely looking forward to more in this series.

Kai and James are so perfect for one another. While their beginning was based on overheated emotions and a fair bit of hurt and betrayal, their "ending" was filled with love, new beginnings, and sexy uniform play.

Another trip to a dark, gritty world that is Asylum brings us all of what we we curious about regarding James in The Sinner and the Liar. We could clearly see that James wasn't all that he seemed and as messed up as his past is, I loved getting his full story. Though I will say that the James in my head from Sinner is different from the one I imagine in Traitor (Fighter? He's the fighter in this book, but it's weird to refer to the title as the second moniker, yeah? Anyway...). The beginning had me aching and oh so curious about him and every time his wall got chipped away a little more by Kai I liked him even more. And when his playful side came out I discovered I was ass over tea kettle in love.

Kai was a little trickier for me, oddly enough. I loved him for James and his ridiculousness was absolutely endearing, though what made me adore James was slightly missing from Kai. I didn't want him damaged, wary, or heartbreakingly lost, just a little more of something I can't quite put my finger on. What made him special was how he truly saw James.

The story itself moved slowly but never felt like it dragged. The details were good and important to building not just the relationship, but showing the overlap with Sawyer and the transition in the aftermath. The life they end up with is the one they deserved from the beginning, but it wasn't until after the gauntlet that they'd feel sure of the fit. There were plenty of lighter moments to balance out the horrible and painful ones. I thought this was a fantastic story and I honestly can't wait to find out about Ian.

Amazing story!!!!
The Traitor and the Fighter doesn’t have the outlandish humor that I’ve come to expect when picking up an Alice Winters novel but that’s what makes this book so good. It’s very somber and gritty but there is still a lightness to these characters that is unexpected especially with James. The more we learn about him and his past it’s amazing to see how he can still find his sense of humor, even though it is a bit depraved.
Most of this story takes place during the same timeline as The Sinner and the Liar but we are seeing what’s happening on the other side. I don’t think the first book needs to be read in order to enjoy this one however I think you will appreciate this story more if you know both sides.
Highly, highly recommend this!!!

This book is pure perfection and so much more than I expected. I totally recommend making sure you have read The Sinner and the Liar before going I to this book.

This series is a little darker than what we are used to with Alice but it is not all that dark. I loved book one and honestly I love this book even more

James is totally not who you think he is from book one. He is so much more than just second in command. My heart ached so hard for him and what he has been put through

Kai is the perfect compliment to James. Their chemistry is off the chart and their banter will leave you on the floor laughing

I can’t recommend this series enough to anyone to read and already asking for book three if there will be one. There better be. LOL.

I wish I could give these guys more than five stars

Alice Winter's The Traitor and the Fighter is great addition to her Seeking Asylum series. Be sure to read book one, The Sinner and the Liar first.

Kai and James live in a world where finding love isn't a viable option. But when Kai's sent back into the ugly world he left behind, all in an attempt to save his sister, their worlds collide. They both have feelings that never went away, and they're full of anger and hate towards one another.

It's a fascinating read as falling in love isn't an easy thing to do in the dangerous world they live in. Lies are told, and hiding is necessary, as Kai is working undercover. The city is ruled by Sawyer's gang, leading to a great mix of action, danger, and tough choices.

The author expertly weaves this dark, suspenseful tale with romance and humor. It includes some hot hate sex, and the action is well done, full of danger, but never overly scary. Not the typical laugh every second that we're used to with this author, but there are still plenty of laughs and innuendoes.

Damn, Alice Winters does it again. The Traitor and the Fighter is a riveting tale of finding that perfect partner, the one who ends up saving you. It's fantastic action story mixed with danger and plenty of sex and romance. It has a superb writing style, with a multi layered plot, great dialogue, and plenty of banter and snark. Basically, Alice is a must read for me, as she never lets me down.

ENG- So well well well... well  I really liked the first volume in this series and I was looking forward to the second one. So, ok, when I learned that this volume would not be about the characters of the first volume but about new characters I was a little disappointed. But I quickly went beyond when I started reading. You must have read the first volume before reading this one. It is not a simple companion volume. The two stories are intimately linked, both in terms of the characters and in terms of time. I also took a few chapters to remember who was who and to understand when we were in relation to volume 1, simply because I read volume 1 8 months ago. But if you chain the two volumes or have a better memory than me, you will have no problem there.

Sooooooooooooo I really liked this second volume. I found all the elements that I loved in the first and in particular the super glaucous and dark atmosphere which differs completely from the other novels of the author. From memory, there is a little more humor in this volume there, even if we are far from the level of humor of these other novels but I must say that I like this difference.

This series is not laughing and if the few funny moments allow us to breathe, we still stay in a dark and heavy atmosphere that I really liked. The character of James particularly touched me. He is a character who has a very heavy past and thanks to Kai, he will gradually open up and rebuild himself. He is a very strong character but I liked that Kai is also a strong character although damaged by life. Here there are two manly men and bad ass and it's really nice. It changes a bit of the MM romance shots and I really enjoyed it.

This second volume gives us another vision of the history of the first and I love when we have the same story from different points of view, it clearly brings more to the story and to reading. It is still different from the alternate points of view since we are on two completely independent but complementary novels.
The second part of this tome is totally independent and new and it was really interesting. I wondered what the author was going to offer us and I was more than pleasantly surprised. This second part is just as catchy and breathtaking and I savored each page.

In summary, a second volume largely up to the first and a series different from what the author usually offers but which is one of my favorite series by Alice Winters.

Welcome back to Asylum, and the world of the Chromes. This is book 2 in the Seeking Asylum Series. I urge you to read The Sinner and the Liar to help with the set up. Each book focuses on a different couple, but runs parallel with each other in the story line.

Enemies to lovers, Kai and James story will give you suspense, danger and action-packed scenes. Sawyer is the evil and crazy overlord that runs Asylum with an iron fist, and Kia was at one time considered the best gunmen Sawyer had. Kai was able to escape this world of violence only to find himself being drawn back in due to unforeseen circumstance and unconditional love.

James is Sawyer’s second in command, from the outside looking in he looks cold and emotionless all most puppet like. The verbal abuse that he endures with Sawyer is absolutely heartbreaking. Nothing in Asylum is as it seems.

The Traitor and the Fighter will take you on a journey of self-discovery and heartbreak. Kai and James mange to find love in a cold and unforgiving world.
What starts out as self-serving actions turns into some surprising plot twist, factor in murder, drama and spying with some hot sex scenes and you have a 5-star story.
I was given an ARC for my honest review.

I couldn't get enough of this dark, gritty urban, dystopian story. The Traitor and the Fighter is book #2 in the Seeking Asylum series and is a great addition to the series.

Kai and James are both products of their environment, which is the worst of the worst. This leaves them living lives with very little choices. They are forced to actions each would not have chosen.
When given an opportunity to change what they never thought could be changed, what would they do? I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. Emotions swinging sharply as the story unfolded.

While this series is on the darker side, Alice Winters humor still shines through. The dynamics between Kai and James is intriguing. Going from enemies to lovers, they run the full gamut of emotions. The complexity of these characters is truly a testament to the outstanding talent of this author. This is another homerun from Alice Winters.

Havoc Haven Home

Desperate to save his sister, Kai would do anything, even return to the savage criminal life he has escaped years ago and face the psychotic monster who leads the chaos. But he didn't count on the gang's second in command remembering how he'd abandoned him to the wrath of the leader after his escape because he assumed James was just a mindless drone following orders. James is lividly angry when Kai returns to his hellish existence because he thought he had escaped and left him behind. But Kai is different than the gang member he has been and has grown up to be someone James can admire, even like. Can James forgive him and actually feel something for another person besides the hate that eats at his soul? Kai must find a way to earn back trust so he can get his sister the care she needs, but is there someone else he cares about as well now that he understands more? Loving everything Alice Winters writes!

Alice Winters has built her brand on comedy, over the top antics, hijinks, and miscellaneous zaniness. That is NOT what this book is about. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of funny one-liners and sweet encounters, but this book is also gritty, dark, and violent. That being said, I also enjoyed the heck out of it. James and Kai might not be the typical romantic heroes we go looking for when we think about romance novels, but they make sense in the dystopian, post-WW3 world they live in. If you're looking for a book like Hitman, definitely go and re-read Hitman, because you're not going to find that here. What you will find is an intense and riveting read between two sexy anti-heroes who try to work their way toward redemption, both individually and together.

This is book two in the series and would definitely be best enjoyed after reading book one, The Sinner and the Liar.

Alice Winters has a knack for writing complex characters and compelling storylines that completely suck you in. Kai and James are no exception. They still have the snark factor in spades, but on top of this, they're also devastatingly real and flawed. I desperately wanted to wrap James up in bubble wrap and help him see how he's worth so much more than what Sawyer has conditioned him to believe. Thank goodness for the blessing that is Kai because the way he treats James is utterly beautiful. The possessiveness and protectiveness they have for each other is just everything!

The story itself is fairly dark and disheartening at times, but the relationship and love between Kai and James makes it so so worth it. Make sure you read this series!

Wow

I may have a new favorite couple, which if you are an Alice reader, you know they've got stiff competition. The Seeking Asylum books are some of my favorite. They are a bit darker than the authors usual works, which I appreciate. I love her lighter, funny stuff but sometimes it can get over the top. This had its moments too, but the weight of it, balanced it all out. James might be one of her most damaged characters, and I had my doubts about if the author could pull off making me love the clear villain from book 1, but I needn't have worried. Flawless execution. I love James. I can't actually think of a main character in the authors total catalogue that I don't love but James is going to be special to me, always.

5 stars. I enjoyed this even more than the first book. Definitely still far more dark than her other books, with less humour, which proves that Alice Winters can write both styles and write them extremely well.

I really loved the characters in this one, and how the first half of the book runs along the timeline of book one. For our two characters, their story is very claustrophobic for a long while, and navigating their romance was smart and a treat to read.

I’m very excited for the next book, which I hope will be Ian and Lucas’, but I’ll take anything. Alice Winters typically writes series’ with multiple books surrounding existing couples which I love, but this series seems to follow the pattern of a new couple each book which I think fits the dystopian world this series is set in.

WOW! Gritty, witty and amazing

This original, fast paced plot had me hooked from the very beginning.
Two very complex, intense and intriguing main characters who love snark, humour, witty banter, a touch of darkness and action.
There’s lots of dramatic action, with twists and turns, that kept me turning the pages desperately wanting to find out what happens next.
James and Kai have amazing chemistry that sizzles and manage to pursue their relationship whilst surviving all that is thrown at them. There’s some feels for what they’ve both endured throughout their lives, tempered with lots of laugh out loud moments.
This is a fantastic read and loved every moment of it!

Loved Kai and James dynamic

I love Alice Winters writing, its amazing and the best thing is her characters never change if the are goofy there goofy throughout the book if the are stern they are stern throughout the book etc. What they do is learn to love and be the best person they can be and the other persons loves all of them.
This story went on too long but I loved the chemistry, banater and acceptance from James and Kai. They made each other perfect.
I did like this one so much better than the first and to be honest didnt read all of the first one didnt like Eastyn and Sin seemed like a whimp. Would truly recommend reading.

Not a typical Alice Winters

I've read almost every series by Alice Winters and I've enjoyed them all. However the 'wise cracking younger guy' was starting to get a bit much until they all started blending together. This book is different. Both James and Kai are proper adults, almost the same age, and much more evenly matched. I loved the simplicity of their relationship and the fact that there was no unnecessary angst and misunderstandings between them though there was scope to create it if the author wanted. I enjoyed the book and I'm glad this dystopian universe is starting to perk up at the end of each book.

3 1/2🌟's

Wanting a second chance is basically what this book is about for each of our characters. Kai and James will do whatever they can to make sure it happens. There were to many sex scenes and some happened at the stupidest times that you knew it could have gotten them both killed on the spot. They are supposed to be alert to the danger around them and instead prancing around outside naked. Not smart and that annoyed me. I do appreciate however there loyalty and love the have for each other and it does run deep.

Anyone who has read the author's other series knows how well she does humor and the Seeking Asylum series shows just how well she does gritty and angst-ridden too. Kai and James were amazing characters and their enemies to lovers vibe had me glued to my tablet and while it could technically be read as a standalone, I think series world is richer if The Sinner and the Liar is read first. All in all a brilliant addition to the series.

The author has skillfully crafted a fantastic, grab-you-by-the-feels, raw, gritty, intense, fast paced, enthralling, heartbreaking yet hopeful, dark, snarky, wild, smoking hot, and totally awesome tale. There are moments of light in the darkness, humor in the grim surroundings, and completely unexpected twists and turns. It had me hooked from the very first page, and I would DEFINITELY recommend getting this marvelous book immediately.

The Traitor and the Fighter is a gritty, dark and raw book. Kai is a survivor and he had to go back to a world that is ruled by a man that is devious and crazy in order to save his sister. John was betrayed by Kai but now is second in command to the man but will never be better than Kai. They both had to do whatever it takes to survive or be killed. Even the book is raw and dark it's still a great book. There's some romance, a lot of action, very intense moments and overall a great book.

You must read book 1 first because this story takes place around the same time as book 1.

This book gives us the story about James and Kai. James is second man of Saywer who has him under his tumb. Kai returns to Saywer after he went away for a few years but it will cost him some more before he is welcomed back.

Who will be the last man standing when the walls begin to crumble and death seems to be the normal thing... Who do you trust?
