Takes on a journey to the Caribbean where on one little island you can find a whole lot of things to count - from two parrots squawking in a coconut tree and five market ladies selling tropical fruits, to nine limbo dancers on a sandy beach and ten colourfully dressed children celebrating carnival time.
Frane Lessac has done a fantastic job with this counting book. Get an introduction to Caribbean life, while learning to count!
The thing I like most about this book is that in addition to the item mentioned in the text (e.g. Four donkeys) the illustrations include many other items to count (e.g. four windmill blades, four baskets of fruit (each with four items in them), four clouds, four palm trees, four flowers, four cows, etc, etc).
Title: Island Counting 1 2 3 Author: Frané Lessac Genre: Counting book Themes: numbers, Caribbean culture Opening line: One little island on the Carribean Sea
Brief Book Summary: This book counts from 1 to 10 using Caribbean themed objects and scenery. It starts from one being the whole island then transitions to things on the island and ends back with the whole island.
Professional Review #1: Marilyn Courtot (Children’s Literature) http://www.clcd.com.ezaccess.librarie... “A sunny, green island in the Caribbean is the setting for this counting book. It opens with the island and number 1 in a yellow box.”
Professional Review #2 Kaitlyn Torres (Kindergarten Teacher) “This book counts from one to ten and includes bright, pretty illustrations, rhythm and rhyme, and an introduction to island life.”
Response to Reviews: I shared the same feelings of this book as the two reviewers. I really like that the second review points out the rhythm and rhymes the book uses. Not all counting books include rhyme, but I thought that was one of the major pros of this book. I also agree the illustrations were exceptional. I am in agreeance with both reviews.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: The tone of this book is refreshing and happy. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and cheery and the text is short, easy to read and holds a steady rhythm that makes the book a joy to read aloud. A combination of these two aspects creates the perfect tone for early readers.
Considerations of Instructional Application: The illustrations in my opinion are the best part of this book. I think this book could be used for a book share opportunity with the full class and using a felt board with the counting objects to further enjoy the illustrations. This would be a great lesson in both culture and counting for early education students.
This book counts form one to ten and includes bright, pretty illustrations, rhythm and rhyme, and an introduction to island life. Each page includes multiple things to count. (The text may mention two parrots, but aside from the two parrots, you will find two palm trees, two lizards, two butterflies, two lady bugs, etc). This book is an awesome island paradise of counting fun!
I think that this book will be a great educational tool for PRe-K - Kindergarten students who are just learning how to count. It will also be good for teachers to use in a read aoud and the students can predict what the next number will be.
Since my son is such a number freak, this was heavily requested when we had it from the library. I loved the bright, fun pictures and the short rhyming story.
What a fun way to compliment our Caribbean culture lesson. I appreciated learning new words specific to the Caribbean area. Another great counting book.
The author came to my school and explained her thought process for her illustrations. I loved the visit. She talked about this book and pointed out that there are many things to count!
My kids love this board book. Right now counting, colors, shapes, and alphabet books are their favorite, and they really liked this book. This is a numbers and counting book and we count up to ten in rhyme. Fun and colorful.
