On each double-page spread a number from one to ten changes gradually into a familiar object or animal, splitting apart in the process into the appropriate number of parts or pieces. Descriptive text in the back gives clues as to the nature of the thing depicted.
Very pretty. The idea of counting pieces of each image that make up each number is clever and fun, but too often it doesn't quite work and I had to resort to the key in the back to see how MacDonald came up with the count. For example pieces that touched at point-to-point were sometimes counted as one, sometimes as two. I would love to see someone be inspired by this and make a new pretty book along roughly similar lines (don't copy!).
