Ten women poets bring the ancient collection of psalms into modern context: seeking justice and celebrating beauty, longing for grace and proclaiming love. "The Words of Her Mouth: Psalms for the Struggle" is a balm in these days of spiritual strife and political struggle.
I can't wait to share this wonderful book with readers. I'm grateful to the nine women who, with me, took on writing our own psalms in conversation with the Biblical psalms.
I had been searching for a feminist version of the book of Psalms for years when I stumbled upon this book at the beginning of July. I have read it three times so far. I love the honesty, pain, joy, and playfulness that comes through in these poems, and I feel certain I will come back to them over and over again.
I cannot commend this collection highly enough. It is a beautiful companion for a readthrough of the Psalms. The poems are deep, encouraging, challenging, beautiful, inspiring, hopeful, and convicting. Through all of them runs a thread of deep and honest faith that isn’t afraid to wrestle with the big questions. I am so grateful for each of the women who poured their lives into these poems.
Highly, highly recommend for anyone who has a connection to the Psalms. I will keep this next to my Bibles and commentaries for reference any time I preach on a Psalm or lead worship. Beautiful, honest, sometimes funny, vivid prayers.
