Echoes of War #6

Run the Gauntlet

Rate this book

Every choice has a cost.

The fate of the Terran Coalition stands on a knife’s edge. An anti-war president-elect stands ready to take the helm, with a platform of a peace treaty based on appeasement. The Coalition Defense Force has mere months to inflict maximum damage on the League’s military capabilities in hopes of preserving all the gains paid for in blood. Before they’re wiped away in favor of a tenuous peace.

A peace Colonel David Cohen knows won’t last.

A treaty with the socialist League won’t be worth the paper it’s written on. The Coalition’s best hope is to orchestrate a daring plan to cripple the enemy where it will hurt most – in the heart of their home turf. David is charged with leading a small but powerful force of CDF ships behind enemy lines to destroy key shipyards that will cut League military capabilities by seventy percent.

But a serpent is most dangerous when cornered.

When David is confronted with overwhelming League forces, he embarks on a desperate attack, using untested technology and tactics. Because the price for failure would be too high.

Will the cost of success finally be too high to bear?

Again, Daniel Gibbs gives us an action-packed, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching space opera that combines a last-ditch military effort with echoes of Neville Chamberlain's negotiations with Hitler and the state-side protests of the Vietnam War. When people do not appreciate political realities or the soldiers who fight and die for them, it must be really tempting for the soldiers to just let the civilians in question stream off the cliff of willful self-delusion into oblivion. How do the soldiers continue to serve with that kind of lack of appreciation?

I received an ARC from Hidden Gems and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

One of the most heartwrenching of this series, to me, RUN THE GAUNTLET is Book 6 of prolific author Daniel Gibbs' ECHOES OF WAR Series. In RUN THE GAUNTLET, David Cohen of the CSV Lion of Judah faces new tribulations of peacetime, quite possibly eventually equaling the sufferings of war in which he has battled for nearly 20 years.

The lines, and the dangers, are clear to David, his friends and crew. But to the political animals in governmental and military high places, greed and power are the values, not Integrity--certainly not faith. The peacetime to which David returns is all too relevant to present day.

Technical errors prevent a higher tating

5 degrees C is not "brutally cold". Thrust, speed, and velocity are not the same. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are not "the world's three major religions " (hint: Judaism comes in at well under a percent ,while atheist/unaffiliated, Hinduism, and Buddhism around out the top 5), and just under 2/3 of the population accepts the concept of natural selection. The overdone religiosity of previous works has mercifully been toned back a bit, but this is offset by an uptick in grammatical/editorial errors. Still, the storytelling is top notch.

Another awesome book from David Gibbs

The saga of the war between the Terrans and the league continues. With a new Peace Union coming into power, Gen. Cohen and his fleet try to ensure a more lengthy peace by attacking the League's shipbuilding stations. They succeed, but at a high cost. Many lives are lost and David Cohen blames himself for his decision to advance against the second station. His decision results in more deaths, although the mission is a success. The CDF is falsely accused of war crimes, and Cohen faces a trial. This book doesn't have a happy ending, but anticipation of trials ahead.

As President Spencer prepares to hand control of the Terran Coalition over to the newly elected Peace party candidate for president, and his activist vice president, Spencer again asks the impossible of David Cohen and his loyal crew on The Lion of Judah. Charged with striking a blow at the heart of the League of Sol will they, yet again, come through the jaws of death to win the day?

With charges of war crimes looming over their heads, what will they face when they return home?

Another exciting installment of Echoes of War that I couldn’t put down. Great read!

Hangin’ In There

Great continuation of the series. David Cohen works his magic again. I’m mesmerized by the same occurrences in real life today. We are bombarded with hate similar to that of the Tirans by the League of Sol. Hope the last of the series can get all this ironed out to my satisfaction.

Excellent people descriptions

War isn't just about people and ships killed and victory. Its about the aftermath; the internal recriminations of the men who gave the orders and knew some of their men would be killed. All good officers always face this kind of grief after a battle. It was well told in this episode.

Great read.

This book was an amazing read it was full of off the wall strategies and unexpected outcomes . This was the book that put everything you thought about inside out . The evil made the good guys look like bad guys when they came home and the new president is a totally different person then the one in office now and that's not for the better.
