Reclusive novelist Eugenia writes a chart-busting novel under the pen name Amy Mathews. The best part? She doesn’t even have to talk to anybody. Her outgoing older sister, Virginia - the face of the fictitious writer - takes care of all those pesky activities. It’s a lucrative partnership that landed Amy Mathews literary fame and fortune . . .
Until now.
Virginia wants more books, but Amy Mathews is pretty much dead to Eugenia. She’s determined to break out of her comfy coffin of a life, ditch the pen name, and maybe even meet a fan or two. But her sister doesn’t like the idea of unemployment. She doesn’t like it one bit.
And soon, Eugenia discovers that it’s not that easy to put down the pen. In fact, it can very well turn deadly . . .
For fans of Woman In The Window and Gillian Flynn comes this stirring tale that will leave you wondering: do you ever really know someone?
This smart and twisty thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
First of all, I absolutely loved this book. I've never read anything from Rachel Blackledge before and only came across this one, because it was a free offer. However, from the first page to the last it captivated me. Even though I must admit I grinched a little bit when I read about the main protagonist being a writer. I reminded me to much of Stephen King. (Not that I don't like him). However, The Hunted is nothing like ST's stories. Slow at the beginning it lures you in, making you feel with the main character and her anxiety struggles and gets you caught up in her later fast paste fight for survival. Big thumbs up.
Wow! I don’t know what to say. This was so good. It is hard to call it one specific thing. There is a creeping dread throughout the first part of the book. You know something bad is coming and I didn’t want to get to it because I loved Genie so much. On paper, some of the crazy things that happen seem like they would be too over the top to make the book good. However, the characters are drawn so well that the actions are believable for the most part. There were a couple small things that seemed a little too convenient. But that is easily overlooked because the rest is so good. There is action, violence, anxiety, creativity, and more. There is so much packed into this book. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
This thriller is phenomenal! I read it in 24 hours. Maybe I enjoyed it so much because I identify so strongly with main character Eugenia, a reclusive writer who must learn to fight and defend herself and her loved ones.
It's also close to home, and illustrates how stalker behavior can quickly escalate and why it should always be taken seriously.
There was great action about two thirds of the way through. However, the build up wasn’t so good. I didn’t really want to know about the plot of the authors book on the story so much. I found myself skipping through some of those parts. I got the gist and felt I didn’t need to read all about it.
I've rated The Hunted 3 stars because there were aspects of the book that I thought were truly brilliant, well thought out and well written. But, there were other parts that I thought were really poor and would have rated 2 stars.
The writing style, whilst I found difficult to get into at first, really lent itself to the story. It's all first person POV, and shown through the eyes of Eugenia, who is a brilliant storyteller, she was very in tune with her surroundings, so we didn't miss anything.
Through the first few chapters as we were introduced to the story and our characters and their history there was this sense of foreboding that was building up, word by word. Sadly, it seemed to reach a natural peak and things all got a little bit out of hand from there, which is where I would rated parts much lower.
It felt like we'd done a complete 180 to the way the story was going and the way the blurb made the story sound. Which was really disappointing as the blurb is what hooked me onto this book in the first place.
The characters were one of the key redeeming points of this story though, they were cleverly crafted to build the story up and they all brought something different.
Virginia was not the character I thought she would turn out to be, there was some real growth there. And I completely guessed Ben wrong, I couldn't have been further from the truth with him! (It's testament to the author that she planted this clever seed of doubt about everyone in this book so when their true colours were revealed, some were a shock).
There were points of this book that I devoured page after page desperate to find out what was happening and what would happen next, and there were others that I skim read the page and shook my head at because it seemed so ridiculous to the picture that the author painted previously.
The ending was the real let down for me, I felt like what could have built up to SOOOOO much just kind of crashed and burned and left me feeling a bit empty and drained.
Overall I thought The Hunting was inconsistent, hence my 3 star rating.
An edge of your seat thriller. The anxiety in the main character is well written, and I can seriously feel for her, even though I’ve not had anxiety issues myself. Unfortunately, from the middle of the book the grammar and spelling mistakes are practically on every page. This really lets the story down for some of the book, as it makes the flow of prose, stutter and re-start. If the editing of this book had been better, it would definitely be five stars.
The first half of the book was boring but the last half was an exciting page turner. It’s about a book author and her sister held hostage by a psychological killer.
The story mixes love, betrayal, jealousy, crime and hate. So much happens that you just can´t wait to see how it ends. I read it at one go! Very entertaining !
Life is great for Eugenia Ward. She's a reclusive novelist who writes a chart-busting novel under the pen name Amy Mathews. The best part? She doesn’t even have to talk to anybody. Her outgoing older sister, the face of Amy Mathews, takes care of all those pesky activities. Eugenia is free to write and garden and overcome her social phobias in peace. But good times are about to turn ugly. After a terrifying stalker ordeal, both sisters move to a maximum security house designed to keep them safe and secure. And soon, Eugenia begins to question whether she locked the dangerous people out, or whether they’re locked inside with her . . . This smart and twisty thriller that is equal parts terrifying and profound will keep your on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Wow!!! What a wonderful twisted read this was. Well written plot and story line that keep you gripped to the edge of your seat. Characters that have been fleshed out well and who are very twisted. That ending what a twisted end that I did not see coming at all!!! I can't wait to read more from this author!! Highly recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
