There is so little to this board book -- each page is a single photograph captioned with a single-word emotion -- it's easy to get bored and start looking past the bland surface, overanalyzing in search of something more interesting, and --whoops! -- finding some problematic stuff being reinforced.
Like the little black girl being "mad." Like the little brown-skinned child being ignored by other kids is "lonely." Like the Asian girl with an academic achievement is "proud." Like a crying little white girl is the exemplar of "hurt."
This is a picture book and it is intended for the readers of the nursery age group. This book is about feelings. The pictures are of real children in real life situations. It is easily readable. I would use the book to teach about feelings.
Great book for teach about feelings. All my kids enjoy this one because as I explain the feelings, I ask them to make the face. (ie sad face, angry face, etc.) They find this great fun. Even my 6 yr old enjoys this. I also use it to teach vocabulary, telling them similar words to the words used. (ie scared is like afraid, etc.) A great teaching book, if not a little on the short side.
