Rate this book
Rated ★★★★★ by Readers' Favorite When a young horse and a little girl fascinated by the stars above are brought together by a bit of fate and one shooting star, nothing can keep them apart. Cheryl Olsten tells the fanciful and delightful tale of a young horse in Belgium and a little girl living in America who are brought together by a bit of fate and a shooting star. When Ella's parents send her to live with her great-aunt in the beautiful Kingdom of Belgium, she becomes lonely and lost. Not far away lives an equally lonely young horse, the smallest in the stable. Little Feat, as he will be known, longs for a forever friend. When Ella and Little Feat are brought together, their devotion to each other grows. Their awe and love of the night sky with sparkling stars and constellations takes them on a journey that will change their lives forever. Big Wishes for Little Feat is a wonderful tale that will ignite the imagination with its rich, colorful illustrations by award-winning Italian illustrator Paolo d'Altan. Central to the book's charm is the imagery of stars and constellations to which a little girl and her horse both look for inspiration, confidence, and faith in themselves, as they learn how to turn disappointments into achievements. A quirky aunt adds to the fun of this tale of happy endings and new beginnings. For young girls who love animals with a special fondness for the magic of horses. Born on a farm in Bonnerville in the Kingdom of Belgium was a mahogany-coloured foal called Lafitte De Muze. As the foal got older he learned to run fast and jump but he was only small and he wished that he could be taller like his friends.

When he was four-years-old he was ready to be sold and he couldn’t wait to meet his new owners who would love him, but no-one chose him. He was upset and wondered if it was because he was so small. His parents told him to keep his head held high and never stop believing.

Across the world, a little girl called Ella was saying goodbye to her parents who had fallen on hard times and they were sending her to Belgium to stay with her Great Aunt for the summer whilst they sorted themselves out.

Overtime Ella became lonely and sad because she missed her parents. Her Aunt knew she liked horses so she took her to the Bonnerville Horse sale in hope that she might find a perfect friend.

Big Wishes for Little Feat was a beautiful book about a young horse who wasn’t very happy with his size and believed that he was never going to find his perfect owner. The story is very sweet and has the most amazing full-page illustrations.

The book has a lot of writing so it is more for a confident reader, or for an adult to read to a young child. There is a magical aspect to the book that runs alongside the story. Whilst I understand why it was added and children will most likely love it, personally, I would have liked to have seen the book stay as realistic as possible rather than Lafitte jumping so high a star touched his leg and left a mark, or the ending, which I won’t spoil.

Overall, the book is very cute and was a quick read. Children who have a love of horses will completely adore it.

You have no idea how comforting this little book is!

I would love to read this to any kid wherever and whenever possible.

The book is so well written.

With all that star talk, genuine care and concern by those who care about Ella, her love for the stars and the sky and the nature, her love for Lafitte the little strong horse which everyone rejected I just fell in love with all the characters and the writing. It feels like warm caramel.

The adult characters are represented very sensibly in a way they understand kids and what they mean when they say they want to best for their kids.

Aunt Anastasia is so much fun!

This book is just so good!

I would totally grab a few copies when it comes out and yes, the one who reads this will feel totally blessed!

Thanks NetGalley for the copy!

I came home today to find this beautifully written and illustrated children’s book waiting for me at my front door. It was my luck to have won this children’s book in a goodreads give away. I sat down on my couch and found myself immediately immersed in the story and delighted with the beautiful and colorful illustrations.

Big Wishes for Little Feat is about the challenges a young girl named Ella and a young foal named Lafitte De Muze face. Although they live far from each other they are brought together through fate. Both are drawn to and are in awe of the stars up in the sky. Both Lafitte, later named Little Feat by Ella for his achievements, and Ella had to learn to accept their circumstances and overcome their disappointments. Through their friendship and love for each other they learned about being courageous, becoming more confident and believing in themselves and each other. Cheryl Olsten borrowed the long time children’s rhyme of “Starlight, star bright, First star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, Have this wish I wish tonight “ to paint a picture of how Ella’s and Little Feat’s dreams do come true.

Big Wishes for Little Feat by Cheryl Olsten is a delightful book that children ages 5 through 8 would love to hear. This is her first children’s book and what a great one it is. I look forward to seeing her write others. I highly recommend this book for your little ones in your life.

This is a lovely story about facing the challenges life throws your way and doing so with a smile. It's a story about how we are all special in our own way and, though not everyone will see that, the right person always will.

I must say that I found it to be a little too long for a kid's story. The illustrations, however, are completely stunning, they almost felt like paintings.

A big thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing an e-ARC in exchange of an honest and voluntary review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Big Wishes for Little Feat is one of the most captivating and heartfelt stories for children that I have ever read. Every aspect of this book is beautiful, from the story itself to the stunning illustrations throughout.

A young girl gets sent to live with her great aunt as her parents are struggling for money and want her to not have to go without. Here she has a great time but misses her parents dreadfully. A young foal is also feeling saddened because he never gets chosen because of his height and gradually their paths collide to make a beautiful and unbreakable friendship.

This is a story I will cherish forever and share with as many children as I can.

Little Feat is a horse in Belgium who is disappointed to learn that he is the only horse in his stable who is not sold at the horse sale. His parents know the reason is that he is a very small horse. Little Feat continues to practice jumping and, with the help of a little magic, he finds he can jump over the highest fences.

Ella comes to Belgium when her family at home have money problems. Her quirky aunt sees her sadness and decides to help her by getting her a horse.

Ella and Little Feat are a perfect match for each other.

Beautiful illustrations and a lovely little story.

Lafitte the colt was born on Bonneville farm in Belgium.  Lafitte loves running and jumping and although he is not as big as the other horses, he practices hard to be able to jump higher than any of the others.  When it is time for Lafitte to find an owner, he is not chosen by anyone. Lafitte is sad, but keeps believing in himself.  Far away, a young girl named Ella learns that her family has fallen on hard times and she will be going to live with her Aunt Anastasia in Belgium.  Fate brings Lafitte and Ella together in order for them to do great things.
A story of hope and triumph over adversity, Big Wishes for Little Feat combines themes of believing in yourself with a little bit of magic to create a wonderful story.  This is a children's book, however it is word heavy and has some upper level words as well. This book is best shared as a read-aloud to younger children or for a confident independent reader.  When read aloud to my four year old, the story kept his interest and he loved the beautiful, realistic and detailed illustrations.  There are many important themes in Big Wishes for Little Feat such as believing in yourself, dealing with difficult situations and keeping optimism.  These lead to some great questions and discussions.  The touches of magic were just right to help encourage kids to prevail over negative forces in their lives.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

This is a lovely story with some really beautiful illustrations. Lafitte, a horse, spends his days growing up, enjoying running with the other horses. Lafitte’s legs are shorter than the other horses though, but that only makes him more determined to run faster than the others. As Lafitte grows old enough to be sold as a prize show horse, he wonders who will be his special rider. Meanwhile Ella, a young girl, feels alone in a new country. Can a shooting star help both of them to find what they are looking for?

This is an interesting and lovely story all about Lafitte the horse and Ella a young girl. The story begins with Lafitte, following him as he grows up and waits for someone special to want to ride him. But when all the other horses are picked during the sale, Lafitte is left behind and he’s left wondering if anyone will want to ride him. I loved this first half of the book, following Lafitte who is shorter than all the other horses, and we read conversations he has with some other horses, and see the emotional bond that he’s just waiting to have with that special rider.

Not long after the horse sale, the book switches focus to Ella, a ten year old girl who loves to watch the stars in the sky with her dad. When Ella’s parents fall on hard times she has to move in with her great Aunt Anastasia in Belgium. Flying to a new country she is nervous but she soon settles down and begins to enjoy her aunt’s company. But Ella soon grows lonely, mising her parents, so Aunt Anastasia plans a special trip for her. The two stories, of Ella and Lafitte, soon mix together and the ending is a lovely one although a little shorter than I had hoped.

This is a picture book, which are usually for younger children, but the writing in this one is more in line with books for slightly older children, and indeed there is a lot of text on some pages and in smaller sized print than I’m used to with most picture books. Despite this the tale is a sweet one and is based on a real horse and a real rhyme about wishes. Knowing this made the book feel more special and the whole story is a lovely one. I really enjoyed Lafitte’s story at the start and then later, Ella’s experiences with her Aunt Anastasia who is quite funny as a chracter. But the ending, although very sweet and uplifting, did feel a bit short. I was expecting one more page or one more illustration but that was it. The story does end nicely though and this book does have some really beautiful illustrations.

The pictures are all colourful and look so real. I love the expressions on the characters faces, and I especially love how the horses look. The illustrations really capture the magic of the story and I like how on some pages the pictures frame the writing. The nighttime images with the stars look so brilliant and this book is worth it for the pictures alone. They work well with the story and make you feel the magic more.

Overall this is a lovely book with a fun story of both Ella and Lafitte’s dreams and wishes coming true. It would make a lovely gift for anyone who is especially interested in horses, and has a nice message about believing. However I do think there could have been a bit more at the end, or the book should have been simplified more and turned into a picture book for younger children, as right now it feels like it sits somewhere between a reading book and a picture book.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

This beautiful children's book is both a nice magical story and an incredibly illustrated art work.

A Belgian horse named Lafitte DeMuze meets a little girl named Ella who crosses the Atlantic Ocean to live with her Aunt Anastasia. Ella met the magical horse and called him Little Feat. One of the reasons I liked the children's book is because the author did not 'dummy-down' words but used words that a child could learn! Isn't that what reading is all about? Inseparable, achievement, constellation, excitement --only a few, but can be understood by the context of the story and the story-teller.

This book is first class!

I absolutely LOVED this book!!!

This book is captivating, inspirational, uplifting, encouraging, and heart-warming!!!

This is a story about Lafitte De Muze, a foal who grows up to be still much smaller than the other horses. He was able to run fast and jump and he practiced all the time, but he still didn’t grow or get any bigger. At the age of four his owners decide to sell him, but no one chose to buy him. He continues to feel sad, disappointed, and discouraged, but his parents keep reminding him how special he is, to keep his head held high, and never stop believing.

This story also follows Ella, a young American girl who is sent to Belgium to live with her Great-Aunt Anastasia, as her parents struggle financially. It isn’t long before Ella feels sad and lonely in an unknown country thousands of miles away from her parents. Thankfully, Great-Aunt Anastasia quickly picks up on Ella’s withdrawn morale and she whisks her away to Bonnerville Stables for a horse sale. Ella falls instantly in love with Lafitte and her Great-Aunt purchases him for her. Ella changes her new best friend’s name to Little Feat, her magical horse – as feat means great courage, strength, and skill – it was truly fitting for this very special new friend.

There are so many invaluable life lessons, important morals, and positive messages throughout the story!!

This book should be on EVERY girl’s bookshelf!!

This book is a rewarding read filled with strong, enriching social behavior and developmental goals!!

I am a HUGE animal lover – especially horses (I used to ride and my cousins have stables) so I couldn’t wait to read this book and I am so thrilled that I did as it did not disappoint!!

The story line intrigued me, the writing style captivated me, and the storytelling kept me glued to the pages!!

I love the positivity, the never give up, and always believe in yourself mantras. These messages are extremely important to convey and teach to young children.

I can easily see children pulling the, “please… just one more page…” line on this book as it is hard to put down!!

I also loved the illustrations!! They are so beautiful, delicate, and detailed. I enjoyed following along watching the pictures all tell their story.

I think many kids will be asking for horses – or at least riding lessons after reading this book lol!!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all children’s readers and animal lovers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

I won a copy of Big Wishes for Little Feat through Goodreads Giveaway. And I am SO THANKFUL to have had the opportunity to win and read this Lovely, beautiful book. 😁 I always do my best to give an honest review though, no matter if I bought it myself or if I won it. So everything I have to say about this book is %100 My True thoughts and feelings about it.

So, let me tell you just How Truly BEAUTIFUL this book is! Literally from Cover to Cover the artwork is Gorgeous. Paolo d'Altan is a wonderfully gifted illustrator, his pictures are downright Breathtaking. And I love the golden constellation end pages! Actually, I just love all the stars and constellations. And anything Galaxy related. Lol.
And you would never know that this is Cheryl Olsten's first Children's Book because the story is so wonderful and very well written. And I love the message of the story. "Little Feat is about building confidence, overcoming obstacles and believing in yourself." A quote taken from one of the first pages in the book. A message great for any/every child to learn and believe. And speaking of quotes, there are many good ones in this little story. One of my favorites being. "Sometimes, wishes do come true, Little Feat - if you keep on believing." And "Promise me you'll hold your head up, let your eyes shine, and never stop believing."

I read this story tonight with my 2 little boys during family time, before bed. (Ages 4 and 7) And they loved it so much too. I mean, they Really got interested in it and loved each and every one of the pictures. This is honestly one of, if not THE BEST
children's book that we have read in quite some time. And it's one that I truly won't mind having to reread a thousand times. Lol. And I'm a 30 year old who usually doesn't much get into the children's stories. But I think it's safe to say that Big Wishes for Little Feat is a book that will be loved and cherished by all ages, boys and girls alike.

And lastly I was happily surprised by the size of this book. I honestly expected a really small paperback, like most children's books tend to be. But no, it's a quite large hardcover book. (About the size of a smaller laptop turned sideways.) The size makes all the illustrations that much more impressive, if you ask me. So its not just full of beautiful pictures, it's full of big beautiful pictures with gorgeous details.
And because the holiday season is coming up I will go ahead and say that this book would make a great gift to any child who loves a great book.

This is a story of a horse named Lafitte De Muze, who never stopped believing in himself.

Lafitte was born on a house farm called Bonneville in Belgium. His only wish was to become a prized show horse and meet the person who can love him and teach him. He loved running through the farm.

But he was shorter compared to his friends, who grew taller with longer legs. He was sad as nobody bought him at the sale just because he was shorter.

It did not affect his confidence for he believed in himself and hence with great determination he started practicing running and jumping at whatever he saw in front him. And gradually he could jump so high that it looked like he was flying along with stars.

On the other side Ella was a beautiful little girl, apple to her parents eyes was sent to her great Aunt Anastasia's house as her parents couldn't afford her education. She always wished to have a horse whi could fly her to the stars.

She missed her parents and was very sad. One day Anastasia took her to the show horse sale at Bonneville so that she could find a horse for herself. Ella instantly got attracted to Lafitte. It became her best friend at a faraway land and she named him Little Feat - a horse of great courage, strength and skill.

This story shows how by believing in ourselves, no matter what others think, we can achieve anything that we want which gives us immense satisfaction. And also there is always someone who would love you and be your companion for your life.

No matter you are short, plump ir has any disability just believe in yourself and keep trying because you are special and you can do wonders trusting yourself.

A great picture book for kids with a very motivational subject. I liked the way the author has narrated the story. The pictures are really beautiful and artistic. The cover pic itself is very eye-catching.

Overall it was a wonderful read. A perfect book fir kids.

I received ARC via NetGalley and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

I love children’s picture books, but I loved them with substance, Big Wishes for Little Feet gives me that and so much more!

Cheryl Olsten brought to life a vivid story of finding happiness right where you are planted, of never giving up even when things do not go your way, and that there is joy in the midst of sadness. I LOVED Lafitte and his story of perseverance. The narration was done beautifully (emphasized by the fantastic illustrations) and I enjoyed getting to watch him grow up. I also liked Ella’s story and how they intertwined together. I think there are a lot of kids who can relate to Ella and her family situation. I especially liked how Cheryl Olsten explained the phonics to say Ella’s nickname from her father Brilliant étoile. It was a fun interactive part of the story; plus, it reinforces dual language learning.

“Little Feet, thought the horse. That is who I am—a horse of great courage, strength, and skill.”

Paolo D’Altan’s work in this book is phenomenal. He truly conveyed the wonder and curiosity displayed by Ella and Lafitte and told their story in a colorful and eye-catching way. I want some of the pictures to hang in my home! As I look back over the story, I am again amazed by all the detailed work that went into this book and I am looking forward to showing my niece this book over Christmas to see which picture is her favorite. Well done Paolo D’Altan!

A definite 5 out of 5 stars for me! Some great themes combined with a good flowing storyline and some great imaginative art.

A horse named Lafitte is waiting for a rider. He knows he can jump really well, but no one wants to buy him because he is too short. So, he waits. Meanwhile, a girl named Ella is staying with her Aunt Anastasia while her parents get things straightened out at her home. As much as she loves Aunt Anastasia, she feels something is missing. What can a wish on a shooting star really do though? Soon enough, both horse and rider will find out.

Opinion:
Big Wishes for Little Feat is a remarkable story about a horse and his rider. But it is also about more than that. It is a story of dreams, hope, and believing anything is possible if you just wait for the right moment. The storyline is easy to follow and beautiful, along with colorful pictures which perfectly complement the story. The vocabulary is too complex for a young child to read by themself, but this book would be a wonderful read aloud to younger grades at school and in the home. The imagery and language help the reader to experience the sights, sounds, and emotions of the character. Big Wishes for Little Feat shows that patience, hope, and a little dreaming can change the
world.

If you like horses you will love this book. Big Wishes for Little Feat is written by Cheryl Olsten (@mydoversoul) and illustrated by Paolo d’Altan (@paolodaltan)

Lafitte is a horse who is shorter than the other horses in his stable. It does not matter to him. He can still run as fast as the other horses. When the time comes for the horses to find a home, nobody picks him because he is short. Lafitte’s dream is to become a racehorse is shattered. His parents encourage him not to give up. Lafitte practices jumping and resolves to jump as high as he can. Lafitte longs for a human friend.

Ella is a little girl who is forced to live with her kind Aunt. She misses her parents. Her aunt thinks that giving Ella a horse might ease her loneliness. Will Ella and Lafitte become friends?

I loved the illustrations in this book and the strong, determined nature of Lafitte. This book also has a touch of astronomy. A must-read if your little one loves horses and stars.

**I received an e-ARC from NetGalley for an honest review**

I like the story, very cute.

This seemed a little long for an young child's book, but a little short for a middle grade novel Unfortunately, the story seemed incomplete- maybe shorten the story or lengthen it, but it feels a little odd with how it's currently set up.

Beautiful artwork- some of the pictures I could easily see framed and put on a wall.

Some of the pages were a little cramped with words, which took away from the art. A couple of pages towards the end were blank of images but had words- but this could be because of my copy being an ARC.

Overall, 3.5/5, but rounded up to 4 due to the beautiful illustrations.

Big wishes for little feat is an inspiring story about a horse who knew he was great. Others overlooked his talents due to his small frame. He befriends a little girl who is struggling with homesickness. Their relationship grows as they each work towards their own dreams.

I found this story to be beautiful. There were a few errors in the manuscript- some lines overlapped in the story, and some passages were difficult to read with the black font being on dark illustrations. However, this is likely due to the download altering rather an an actualy mistake. I found the illustrations to be breathtaking and a perfect match for this story.

Big Wishes for Little Feat by Cheryl Olsten is a beautifully illustrated story. Children will be just as charmed and enchanted as I was. A young girl and a horse being best of friends. A girl's wish to ride in the moonlight with her best friend may just come true. Little Feat is a horse who cant wait to meet his new friend. Together these two characters made me fall in love. It's difficult to not like them so much. Sweet, heartfelt, and entertaining I recommend Big Wishes for Little Feat to all. It encourages children to dream, hope, and wish upon a star.

This is a delightful storybook which young horse lovers will enjoy, even though the title doesn’t really convey the essence of the story. The illustrations by Paolo d’Altan are lovely and have a dream-like quality. Emma is a lonely little girl and Lafitte/Little Feat is a lonely horse, who longs for the person who will love him. Emma’s story and the horse’s story are told separately, until the time when they do come together. The ending felt unexpectedly sudden. I won a hardcover copy of this book via a Goodreads Giveaway and will be gifting it to my seven-year-old horse-loving granddaughter. If she has very different thoughts, I may come back and update my review

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you! While wordy, so may be better suited for slightly older toddlers, this is a cute children’s book about a horse who is something of the “ugly duckling” who doesn’t fit in, but through hard work and determination, he develops compensatory skills and gains confidence, learning that he can do anything - as well as the bond he forms with a lonely little girl - his special rider. I especially like the incorporation of the wishing on a star rhyme and will be passing this selection along to friends with children.

Oh my, I'm not sure if I can write the words that this beautiful little story deserves. It made me feel like a little girl and I couldn't read it fast enough. But...I did stop and slow down. That's because of the fitting and pretty illustrations.

This is not just a beautiful story. It is short and distinct enough to keep a child's interest. I'm supposed to say this is a children's book but I enjoyed it and I'm OLD now:)

What a nice gift for a child of 5or 6 and up to read or for a parent to read to a child of any age.

Review to be added to Amazon US and UK on 6th October 2020 – publication day!

I thought that this was a lovely story and I loved the images used.

The book was easy to follow and the story was easy to understand too but I thought that it ended a little quickly and could have done with a couple of extra pages at the end.

I can see this being a hit (mainly with younger girls aged 8-12) – it is 4 stars from me for this one!

Not my usual read, but it sounded interesting. This was the tale of a small horse with big dreams and a little girl who wants something of her own. The stars and fate brought them together. This was a positive story for children on a topic of being different and patience. It was an easy to read story, and I loved the illustrations as they were so pretty.

I won this in Goodreads Giveaway as a gift for my granddaughter. It is beautifully illustrated and is a story of a young girl going through difficult life changes. It is also told through the horse's perspective as he grows and waits for his person to find him.
I was disappointed in the ending, it felt like more needed said and it just stopped. A child may not notice or maybe it's left for the parent and child to imagine a future for the girl and horse.

I started this book expecting a short children’s picture book, but it was more of a short middle grade story, with lovely illustrations mixed in with the text. I loved the classic premise of the book - a young child is lonely and finds a true friend in a animal companion - but I would have loved just a little more of the story, as I felt it ended abruptly. Overall a nice read!

I'd give it a 3.5 stars. It is a pretty book, at first I was expecting to see small little story with pictures like early children books, but it's more like a middle-grade story with beautiful illustrations. I feel like the story was ended too fast, it could have been more to it. Still, it was a very enjoyable read.

Great kids book about a little foal that wants to be bigger like the other horses, but finds that he can run and jump better than the others, a little girl that goes to live with her great aunt and wants something of her very own. She wishes upon a star and her great aunt buys her Lafitte and she names him Little Feat. And you can read the rest for yourself.

I won a copy of Big Wishes for Little Feat by Cheryl Olsten, Illustrated by Paolo d'Altan, from Goodreads.

A beautiful book in every way, Big Wishes for Little Feat by Cheryl Olsten delights readers young and old. The lovely illustrations capture one's imagination, and the touching story of a little horse and a little girl who become companions teaches children to believe in their dreams.
