The Great Film Emperor, Ji Mian thinks that Young Master Xiao Jiashu is an arrogant, poison-mouthed, spoilt, rich snob who exploits his strong background to ruin people’s lives on a whim. But when he somehow obtains the ability to read minds, Ji Mian comes to realise that Xiao Jiashu is probably the most adorable person in the world.
This is a story about the rise of the acting-fanatic, Xiao Jiashu, as he silences his haters and wows the world with his magnificence.
If I was going to rate this solely based on the MC and ML's relationship, I'd probably give it 4.5 stars just for how adorable they were (especially after they got together.) There was a very predictable misunderstanding before they got together but once that was resolved, they were just so sweet and soft together, it made me forget all about how annoyed I was at the misunderstanding.
But but but. The way XJS' mom reacted to finding out about the relationship just put me off so much. Normally characters having homophobic parents would upset me but not too much because I wasn't expecting any better from them. But in this case, for the first half of the book, it's driven home over and over again how close XJS and his mom are. He is unwaveringly on her side and supports her no matter what and--very importantly--she's shown to be the exact same way. But when she finds out about XJS and JM, her immediate--and continued--reaction is to force them apart, threaten them to stay away from each other, and ultimately force XJS to marry a woman so he can "go back to the right path."
All this was just horrendous. Even if you ignore the homophobia--which YOU REALLY SHOULDN'T--his mom had been trapped in a "~normal~" marriage for 20 years and been miserable for almost all of it and she should know better than most that het relationships are not foolproof and he's not going to automatically be fine if he marries a woman and has children (????????????????) so really what the everloving fuck was that whole arc about and what did it accomplish other than destroying what I had previoiusly thought to be one of the more wholesome mother-son relationships in fiction that I'd seen in a while.
And the saddest part is that when she eventually--pretty unwillingly--comes around, she's immediately slammed with a smear campaign online and XJS is (as always) unwaveringly, absolutely on her side no matter what. This is despite everything she'd done to him in the name of parental love and all that crap. Like literally, in one scene, she's kinda grudgingly on board and then within one book day, she's slammed online and XJS is her personal cheerleader. My heart broke for him because he was so alone for so long and he still stayed so sunny and optimistic (and yeah he was lazy and a bit of a brat but so fucking what, he was 20 and as far as he knew, most of his family didn't give a fuck about him and his only friend had been killed) and when he finally got to be with someone who was unconditionally his, the person who should've been on his side forced them apart, locked him up and kept him under constant watch so he couldn't be "led astray" anymore.
So yeah, even though everything got resolved really neatly at the end and everyone forgave everyone and they were all one big family at the end, I was still pissed because honestly, his mom didn't deserve to be forgiven so easily. (Plus when you think about how Mama Ji reacted it looks even worse for XJS' mom bc Mama Ji was an angel.) (Not condoning what she did to JM when he was younger, but she put her son's happiness first and that counts for a lot.)
The ex-boyfriend and the antagonist at the end were pretty meh. I didn't care for their crap at all and their motivation for wanting to step all over XJS was so stupid. I'm sure there are people like them in reality, I just can't care about any of it in this book. (Also JM's agent .... I don't like him. I'm glad he has to watch XJS and JM flirt in front of him forever bc who asked him to be such an asshole.)
XJS was my favourite honestly. Yeah, he's naive and bratty and lazy but so what. He's also kind and hard-working and knows his limits. He could've used all that power everyone kept crediting for his achievements to crush all the people who tried to come after him but he just left everything alone. He punched the ex one time (well-deserved IMO) and then left him alone. He focused on acting and JM and his family and didn't hold grudges even when it would've been justified. I adore him and I wish we'd gotten so many more scenes with him bc he's a babie and so much more preferable to all the extras who stole his screentime.
Their fans being so supportive was adorable though. As was all their stickiness in public once they got together. I do wish we'd gotten more of JM's backstory and that JM had told XJS about the mind-reading thing. Also wish we'd seen more of XJS' brother, the giant tsundere.
I'd definitely re-read this for the cuteness but I'd skip over all the parts with XJS' mom bc of the way she ruined my perception of their relationship. Really strongly wish someone else had been the one to fill the homophobia quota (which for some reason??? has to be filled??? just let fluffy fiction have no homophobes, what is the problem here) bc I was itching to read more books with parent/child dynamics like theirs was in the first half of the book but after the shitshow later ... yeah, nope.

I picked this book up on a whim but I'm so glad I did. It was one of those books that beat my expectations and kept my eyes glued to my phone screen, at least for the first 2/3 of the story.
It's a lighthearted story set in the entertainment industry with plenty of fluffy romance but also a healthy dose of face slapping, which I personally loved. It follows the MC, Xiao Jiashu, as he transitions from an underappreciated second generation member of the Xiao family to a celebrated actor. Along the way, he befriends the ML Ji Mian, already established as a film emperor, and learns a lot about the profession from acting against him.
Unlike most other stories set in the entertainment industry, there's (refreshingly!) no transmigration or rebirth, though there is still something. From a near death car accident, the ML somehow receives the ability to read minds of people in close proximity to him that he either likes or dislikes. This ability is never explained and is just there as an OP power that the ML has, so after being curious about it for a while, I eventually learned to accept it as part of his character setting.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
As I mentioned earlier, there's a lot of face slapping in this story, and I think that's a huge part of why I enjoyed it so much. Thanks to the ML's ability, he can easily see through the superficial facade presented by others and call their bluff. Without it, both he and his manager Fang Kun would have easily stuck with their first impression of XJS as a conceited second gen kid. So many people get their just desserts served to them, starting with the annoying Li Jiaer and moving onto idiots like Jiang Bingjie and Liu Yilei.
What I really appreciated was that it wasn't love at first sight for both the MC and ML. The MC didn't really appreciate JM until the first time they acted seriously together, and he was able to experience what true acting meant. As for the ML, he is in a relationship already when the story starts, and it was interesting to see how his feelings towards Lin Leyang slowly changed as he realized what LLY truly thought about him. They sat down and had a very adult conversation about the reason for their breakup, and after JM laid it all out, it helped LLY realize he was taking advantage of JM's generosity without reciprocating. I was quite frustrated with LLY's refusal to trust JM and listen to his advice, so this conversation was very satisfying to read.
The romance was super adorable. At the same time JM was slowly getting disillusioned with LLY, he was spending a lot of time with XJS, and XJS's pure thoughts and one-minded enthusiasm towards becoming a better actor gradually wins him over and makes him unable to treat XJS with anything less than affection. He calls XJS a living treasure, and XJS truly feels like he's a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dirty and stuffy room. They have so many roles together that they're constantly feeding candies to their fans and have so many pairings together: the brothers CP, master and servant CP, domineering gong x fragile shou CP, monarch x minister CP... I almost wish they were real so I can eat all of their candies!!
I don't blame JM for falling in love with XJS, I did too over the course of the novel!! He's so precious and had me cracking up so many times with his overactive imagination, like the time when he accidentally stumbled across adult fanfics written about their characters while he's in the gym working out with JM, and his reaction is to read more of them to desensitize himself to these stories XP I'm so glad XJS is there when JM realizes the truth about LLY, so that he has someone who adores him by his side to keep his spirits up.
My main complaint with the novel, and the reason why I deducted a star, is that their relationship progressed too quickly after the confession. Within days, it's already a serious relationship, and iirc they start talking about marriage after 2 months. Also, after they get together, there's SO MUCH FLUFF. Now I don't mind fluff at all, but there were chapters and chapters of it, to the point where it felt like the romance had completely taken over the plot and nothing else was happening. They couldn't keep their hands off each other, not even during the daytime when they were shooting, and it all felt very unprofessional.
The last arc also kinda came out of nowhere, starting with XJS's mom realizing their relationship and being so against it that she essentially keeps XJS in house arrest. She's been such a cool mom for most of the story, so I didn't like the fact that she was made into a bad guy by the author. It would've made more sense if XJS's dad was the main objector, but with all the family drama that was revealed around the same time, his objections became irrelevant. At least JM is always there with his mind reading abilities to protect XJS and take down his rivals!
I was also disappointed that JM chose to never reveal his power to XJS. I really thought that's how the story would end, but alas that never came to be.
it's boring at the beginning, especially at ML boyfriend turn to be ex. but turn better and enjoyable at the mid story. ML "boyfriend" character so dull and bland. he is a hypocrite and drama king. always feel insecure, stupid, greedy and jelous. he so selfish, always ignore ML, dislike ML to always medling his business but when trouble come because his own ridiculous action always trouble ML to clean up his mess. he dislike being close physically with ML although he is in a relationship with ML. he hanging ML. he said he is straight, he become ML boyfriend because of gratitude. but ML does nothing wrong, he doesn't know that he straight, he love him with his whole heart, pampering him, giving him full support. if he tell the truth ML will not force him, but he is greedy with ML attention to him so always reluctant to letting go . fortunately after ML know MC, he can finally feel what is true love. because MC love him unconditionally. MC is an interesting character. he always straight forward with his feeling. in the beginning alot of people missread MC as arrogant, pampering and poisonous 2nd gen young master and dislike him. after they know MC they realise that MC is pure, innocent, down to earth, hard working and dedicated to his acting. when near ML, MC will turn into milk dog wagging his tail looking for ML affection and attention. after MC and ML realize their feeling the story beggin more interesting and after they together they start to throw dog food anytime, anywhere. i like how ML solve their problem with MC's mother and although i'm not fully satisfied with the ending of MC's father and family it's still okay la..love how relationship between MC and his brother. at the beginning it's feel estrange and gradually it become better and better. although his own big family disown MC and his mother but his big brother always support him. ML himself is not perfect. although he has movie emperor persona on public eyes he is a person too who has feeling and can hurt. he's not flawless. this make his character more believeable, more human not only like a overpowering dominering gong and i love it.
For a change, this one is not a transmigration novel.😅
This is a modern day novel centered in the entertainment industry. It has one magical element (that was never explained) that made the story more interesting.👍
We have our ML's POV and with that we also have access to our MC's thoughts and other people on the story. Why? Because our ML can read the minds of people around him as long as they are near enough.
I think this premise helps a lot on understanding the characters in the story. But now that I think about it, it's a bit lazy for the author to do this. It's more on telling than showing but written in a 'creative' way. Though I think it is still okay because I enjoyed reading our MC's thoughts.☺️
This story is full of fluff and some emotional parts. Also the comedy parts are funny and very entertaining.😁
I love the comments and reactions of fans. I also love the movies and variety show that our main couple particapated in.❤️
I love how comfortable and loving our main couple is. They are a bit cheesy at times but it is very refreshing and cute to read their interactions.😍
Over all an entertaining, fluffy read. Just a few plot holes and absurd parts but still a good read.👍
This was amazing honestly, it was a very fun/light type of read. A lot of cute moments and realistic characters. We, as humans, are flawed creatures lol. We aren’t perfect, so we’ll obviously have characteristics that not everyone likes- which is why some people didn’t like the MC or ML attitudes at times, but like I mentioned before “we’re flawed creatures”. I personally enjoyed their personalities and the way they handled things lol. I loved how them being actors was actually part of the story, we saw them grow as actors and we were given really good scripts too. The last “movie”they filmed actually made me cry lolol. The one thing I disliked was the MC’s mom attitudes to her sons relationship, it was a bit to harsh-but once again somewhat realistic.
Very enjoyable until the last arc (spoiler warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I personally did not enjoy the mom suddenly becoming intensely and violently homophobic, it did ruin it for me. However, the main couple is cute. I just can't say I would ever re-read for that section alone, I wish I had been warned about it.

Enjoyed every second of their story... and cried during "the Q" but it was okay because I knew that it was probably part of his plan. Not much of a spoiler but yeah... will reread this in the future.
Soo sticky. OMG. Let e/o breathe? Not my thang romance wise. Healthy relationship besides that. Can't believe ML did not confess his ability. MC is kinda precious.

风流书呆 did it again! I loved reading this book so so much I rushed it within 2 days. I got so addicted to it! I was planning to read a book to lull me to sleep but I got so engrossed that I couldn't put it down.
As the writer of QWTFOTD, this is undoubtedly a good read. However, I do have complains that ML didn't confess (or it wasn't written) to his "superpower" like wtf. You promised to not hide anything?!?! And I doubt MC would have rejected/ alienate him for it? Maybe he would feel embarrassed, but he already said he had nothing to hide.
With that said, I really do like the book as it had angst, fluff, face-slapping and a little smut (very minute). FLSD's skills for writing face-slapping moments is definitely great, as other books like QWTFOTD and The Yandere Came During The Night is full of it.
Definitely re-read worthy and I'm addicted to FLSD works.
The best of the novel is the second half. If only the author didnt spend so much time on the past relationship. It was frustrating to read about the ex's POV but later, the relationship and tender moments between the MV and ML made up for it.
