The continuing adventure of little rich girl Yaya and her street urchin friend Tuduo as they cross war-torn Shanghai in the wake of the Japanese invasion of 1937 in hopes of finding Yaya's parents.
Yaya, her talking bird Pipo, and Tuduo awaken on a deserted island. Here we begin to see some tension between Yaya and Tuduo. Yaya is the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who has had, for the most part, an easy life. Everything she has wanted her parents have been able to provide. Tuduo on the other hand is a street urchin who grew up with no parents and had to scrap and claw for his small lot in life. As survival skills are put to the test, we further discover their strengths and weaknesses. There is also a bit of banter and joking which is nice since previous entries they were always on the run. They get to breathe a little here and it’s nice to have some quiet moments even in the face of island madness.
Eventually it’s revealed that they’re not the only ones on the island. New friends and foes are realized while the gang lord from the previous entries, Zhu, is hot on their tails.
I won’t spoil how this one ends but as always it ends on a thrilling cliffhanger…
On to volume 5! Sad that I am about halfway through! These are terrific characters that I want to journey with for much longer than what’s left.
Poor Tuduo and Yaya! They are trying so hard to find Yaya's family but encountering so many challenges! It's very exciting for a kid's story and the illustrations are consistently beautiful. I could totally see Studio Ghibli making this a feature film, with a beautiful soundtrack and a cast of Chinese voice actors.
