When Richard’s teacher the beloved Ms. Shelby Ortiz is out sick, the “meanest and strictest” substitute takes over their class and his no nonsense approach to discipline has all the students on edge as they are this close to winning a pizza party for their good behavior. Richard is doing really well until he forgets his homework packet and tries his hardest to finish it the morning it’s meant to be turned in. When he copies the main idea on an essay from his friend Khufu he is caught and the class’s average dips below the 90% good behavior they need. Will Ms. Ortiz see how hard he tried and can Richard find a way to make it right so the other kids don’t suffer from his mistake?

This beginning chapter from the Carver Chronicles series featuring diverse characters from the same classroom reflects real world kids and real world problems they face like snack stealing siblings and facing tough expectations at school as Richard does in this story. It’s how Richard handles himself when tough situations occur that makes this an interesting and funny read for kids. He never gives up and if he thinks about blaming others, he realizes that that won’t work and he has to own up to his own mistakes. Black and white illustrations placed sporadically through the text help newly proficient readers to visualize the story and to identify with the characters.

I would recommend this book for purchase by any school or public library.

Richard and the rest of his third grade class, have been working hard to earn a pizza party in Ms. Shelby-Ortiz's classroom for excellent behavior. With only four days to go, Ms. Shelby-Ortiz is out with the flu, and replaced by Mr. Blaggart, the meanest and strictest substitute teacher ever. Mishaps occur, and points are lost. Will the class as a whole recover to earn the pizza party, and when will Ms. Shelby-Ortiz return?

I like this book because it's about normal things kids go through: going to school, doing homework, recess. Kids don't always want to read about major ISSUES.

Will the third graders get their Pizza party or will Richard ruin their chance? Read the book to find out!

Cute, easy read. My students loved debating on what was right or wrong with the "mean" sub. Great at initiating conversations.
