A Murderer Is Loose In The Hospital Dora Stephens can’t refuse this case.
When she witnesses Sheila, the aunt of her best friend, stagger out of the hospital and die from a traffic accident, Dora’s private eye instincts kick in. Something’s not right. Sheila had no known enemies… but someone wanted her dead.
Digging into the circumstances of Sheila’s death leads Dora on a devious path where she encounters lies, drugs, betrayal, and infidelity. She uncovers another mysterious death and stumbles upon a dark secret kept by some of the hospital’s top staff and privileged doctors.
Sheila was not the only nurse who had an affair with the hospital’s star surgeon. Would one of her romantic rivals stoop to murder? Or had she learned too much about the well-kept dark secret?
Fatal Limit is a spellbinding medical thriller that will keep you turning its pages. In this taut and gripping story, greed, love and envy come together to create a deadly toxin. And the only prescription is… justice
Inge-Lise Goss, a USA Today, Award-Winning Bestselling author, was born in Denmark, raised in Utah, and now lives in the foothills of Red Rock Canyon with her husband and their dog, Ted. She spends most of her time in her den writing stories. There, with her muse by her side, her imagination has no boundaries, and her dreams come alive. When she’s not pounding away on the keyboard, she can be found reading, rowing, or trying to perfect her golf game, which she fears is a lost cause.
DNF at 43%. It's not that I thought this was badly written or had any glaring flaws, but it just wasn't for me. I enjoy psychological thrillers, but this was more towards a thriller/mystery arena, which was a bit out of my realm. The story is very slow paced, and even during the 'ah hah' moments of Dora's investigation, it was all bogged down by everything else. The characters were all fairly basic, and Dora, even as the standout, needed some further depth to keep the reader's attention intact. I think fans of strictly the aforementioned latter genres will have a decent time here, but for anyone else, I believe that they'll have the same feedback as I do.
I was given a copy of this book by Voracious Readers Only in return for an honest review.
Private Investigator Dora witnesses the death of her best friend's Aunt Sheila, stummbling into the path of a car after her shift as a Nurse. At the request of her best friend, Maddie, Dora investigates the death and finds a web of familial and extramarital relationships as well as a suspicious disappearance that twist and turn to reveal the truth about Sheila's death.
This was a good read, well written with a relatively good plot. I'm not sure how satisfying the conclusion was but I think that is a matter of taste rather than an issue. Some of the secondary characters could have been fleshed out more, but I appreciate that is difficult in a first person narrative.
But what set this book apart - and why the four stars rather than an average three - was the breaking of the private eye stereotypes and the refreshing main character. It was great to see a story with a female PI who is in a great relationship and has a supportive boss. I would like to read more stories with this character, with maybe a case that has higher stakes.
Dora Stephens, a private investigator, is about to pick up a nurse, Sheila for a drink, when she witnesses her staggering out the hospital only to be run over by a car. Dora can’t believe this has been merely an accident, even though at first glance, the victim seems to have no enemies. “Has Sheila been given a large dose of Activan?”
The story is told in Dora’s voice, which makes it personal. Lies, drugs, betrayal, blackmail, and infidelity come into play, including Sheila’s secret affair with a surgeon. Did she have any rivals for the attention of her lover? Could jealousy be the reason for this murder? Can an antidote for it be found?
The suspenseful writing has its moments of humor to relieve the tension. “I intended… to plant a bug on him, though I didn’t have a clue where I would put one… Why didn’t men carry purses with them? Bugging women was so much easier.” Armed with a nurse’s uniform, a pair of oversized glasses, and a bob-styled auburn wig, Dora’s best weapon is her wits.
I first learned of Inge-Lise’s writing when both of us were invited to take part in the same box set, and could not resist buying this book.
I received a complimentary copy of Fatal Limit from the author via Voracious Readers and I loved it. I couldn't stop reading until the last page. I read it in a day. I couldn't put it down. The characters are very real and I especially like the main character, Dora. She is very clever and brave. My hero. I know you will enjoy it too. Give it a go.
Inge-Lise Gross is new to me. I wasn't completely sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed this suspense, page turner book. This book kept me glued to the book with all the twist and turns. The suspense was intense at times but with it came some humor. I highly recommend this book.
Dora, a private investigator, is on her way to take her best friend's aunt out to wind down. As she's walking towards the hospital in the rain, she sees Sheila stumbling down the sidewalk without her raincoat and looking back towards the hospital. She tries calling it to her, but Sheila walks right out into the street in front of a car! I really enjoyed this thriller. This thriller is similar, yet very different, from most medical thrillers. I loved the main characters. The plot was fantastic with lots of twists and turns. The convoluted family issues really kept me guessing as to who the murderer was. I definitely enjoyed the book and found it hard to put down.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. The Author, Inge-Lise Goss snags you in right from the first sentence. This book is full of suspense with twisting innuendos, lies and intrigue that kept me reading right til the end. The characters are very relatable; Dora is a P.I. and her live-in boyfriend is a Police Detective Tucker. Despite obstacles; they work the murder investigation together. The author builds drama that keeps you reading and guessing, as a true page-turner should. As new discoveries unfold along the way, there is never a dull moment. I believe this fast and captivating read will be enjoyable to mystery fans of all ages. - Charlotte Jonassen
While the book is a bit on the short side, it's also a very interesting read. You have a little medical mystery mixed in with affairs and drama. From the get go, it had me hooked. You delve into the affairs of the hospital as a facility and the staff as well as the relationships that are in the open and the ones that are hidden. This isn't a book that gives you the answers in the first chapter, you have to wait and see. Loved it!
Well woven medical thriller that I found to be totally engrossing and a page turner. Has suspense, intrigue, humor, and action. Full of twists and coverups.
I was so caught up with the characters, how the storyline unfolded, their reactions to each other.. perfectly captured without superfluous description and unnecessary waffle! The twists and turns that left me uncertain about which one gave the fatal dose, I was swinging between them desperately trying to work out who needed Sheila gone the most but you'd given such a well constructed argument for each of them it was gripping to read.. and reread as I admit that I went back to ensure that I hadn't missed a vital clue a couple of times as the story started to reach its climax.
I read a lot! A heck of a lot! It's rare to find such a well constructed and delivered novel. Rare for me to read straight through without break because I am not aware of time passing, rare that I am drawn in to the degree I feel like I am walking with Dora each step of the way, rarer still that I finish feeling a desperate need to read more about the characters and well up because I have finished and I really wanted to know what she did next! What is her next case? Where is it based? Will it involve her employer or be another case on the side? Etc etc
I enjoyed everything about this book there was nothing I didn't like about the book. The writing style, the plot, the setting, the plot twists and the characters in the book were amazing.I would reread this again.
I was given a copy to read by Voracious Readers Only, and it was the best thing I've read in a while. The pacing is absolutely perfect. There is no filler chapters. The characters are very thought out. I adored the mystery of what happened to Sheila and felt satisfied with the ending. Be warned, the beginning of the book will capture your attention quickly. I couldn't put this book down.
This story begins with a bang when a nurse is killed outside the hospital where she works. Dora, the main character, a private investigator witnesses the killing. She was there to pick up the woman in question to take her out for a drink. This woman, Sheila, was her best friend’s aunt. Seeing what happened to Sheila, Dora’s PI instincts kick in and she is off and running to solve this crime. Dora finds that nothing is as it seems, making for an intriguing mystery.
The author keeps the reader engrossed as she provides many suspects and twists and turns in the story line. The characters are interesting and varied with many side stories of their lives that kept the story moving. This was a quick and enjoyable read.
This is a fun read. Enough action and plot twists to keep you engaged throughout. Interesting characters and a good plot will make for a fun evening if you ok k this book to read.
It's clear that Goss is in her element in this genre!
Fatal Limit’s heroine is a private investigator named Dora. Her boyfriend is a homicide detective. How the two handle their sometimes entangled cases is part of what makes the narrative work, and keeps it intriguing.
Sheila’s murder is no exception. With all the “experts” saying it was an unfortunate accident, Dora – and her best friend and Sheila’s niece Maddie – are convinced there is far more to this. The fact that Dora was waiting for Sheila when it happened and saw it, goes even further to convince her that this is her case to solve.
Well written, with characters that are so well drawn as to almost be real, Goss is masterful and keeping the suspense flowing. A truly great read that I highly recommend; I’ll be looking for more from this new-to-me author.
[I was fortunate to receive a copy of the book from the author through the 2021 Winter Games Reader Challenge, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are entirely my own and are given freely.]
This was outstanding, and I will definitely be reading more by this author. The story heads off in a different direction than we are led to believe at least three times and the plot still makes sense through the whole thing. That's pretty impressive.
The story starts with the protagonist witnessing a puzzling event - her best friend's aunt staggers out of the hospital where she works, right into an oncoming car. Her friend asks her to find out what really happened because neither of them believes it was an accident. Was she killed because she was having an affair with a married man? Following that trail leads to an even bigger mystery involving some VIPs (including the man she was having the affair with), but even that doesn't lead quite where she thought it would. The story kept me engaged and wondering despite all the shifts and the relationship between the protagonist and her boyfriend (who is a police detective) is very interesting and not at all what I was expecting. Very nicely done!
Can a PI and her Detective boyfriend get to the bottom of who killedtheirfriend
This is an exciting suspense filled medical thriller. When Dora was waiting to pick up her friend Shella because Maddie was working. She was sitting at the bus stop because she could park that close an it was raining hard. What she witnessed next set her on a mission to find the truth. This is an edge of your seat story. The characters are captivating. We join Dora a P.I. as she tries to get to the bottom of who killed Sheila. There are so many twists an turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page an leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes you can feel their emotions an their pain.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.I voluntarily decided to review this book because its a great suspense filled thriller that I know is so worth reading.
After the dramatic start with a hit and run, the beginning of this book felt a bit dry setting up the characters. It then moved into an interesting mystery where Dora, a private investigator and witness to the "accident", rightly suspects foul play. The victim Shelia, the Aunt of Dora's best friend, was clearly under the influence of something when she was hit. Dora accepts the request to investigate what happened. The book then moves into the complicated love lives of the women surrounding Jared, Shelia's married lover. The investigation has some interesting twists and turns. Dora successfully solves the case without the restrictions of the law which her live in boyfriend has as a homicide detective. I had to suspend belief in reality a bit for their relationship which should have had bit more conflict considering the ethical differences in their jobs. Overall this book is good for a breezy beach read. Note - I did read a free copy supplied by the author through Voracious Readers Only
Fatal limit is a page turning medical thriller. The attention grabbing first chapter sets the stage when Dora Stephen's witnesses the death of a family friend Shelia. Dora sets out to investigate the strange coincidences leading up to Shelia's death. She unearths a pack of lies, deceit, affairs and jealousy-keeping the reader guessing to the end who the culprit is. I enjoyed Dora's exploits and her spunkiness as she solved the mystery. I loved that the focus is primarily on the crime with the aspects of Dora's personal life enhancing not detracting from the story. I highly recommend this intense thriller. I know I am looking forward to reading more about Dora and her investigations.
Great read. Amurder mystery that will keep you turning pages til it is solved. Wonderful characters.Dora is a PI, but personally knows this victim. Smart. Sassy. She works her way thru all the clues. She is a bug expert. According to her police detective live in boyfriend, Tucker. I loved these two. He also work on this case. Their snappy dialogue had me smiling and giggling. No bad language and the sex was off screen. 5 stars. I was gifted an Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin. I got use to the narrator, but she read very fast. Her expressions were appropriate, but I didn't care too much for her male voices. 3 stars.
I thoroughly enjoyed this medical/PI/police procedural mystery. The characters were realistic and relatable. I did feel that the over-sharing between the PI and her police detective boyfriend was a bit unrealistic, but otherwise, the relationships rang true. I will admit that Ms. Goss must be the queen of red herrings. At one point I thought the "bad guy" was one character, then I thought another, and lo and behold I was right the first time. It definitely kept me on my toes. And as a retired nurse, I was very pleased with myself that I figured out the murder weapon. I will be looking for more mysteries by Ms. Goss to add to my library.
Fatal Limit by Inge-Lise Goss would typically be a genre of book I tend to enjoy. A murder mystery with twists and turns of the "whodunnit". However, I did not find this book enjoyable. I found the plot to drag and be predictable. Also, the addition of crowbar'd "sexy" dialog between the main character Dee and her boyfriend Tucker, gave the impression that the author wanted a romance but wasn't sure how to add it into the book. I found this to be unneeded and exasperating to read.
I received a complimentary copy of Fatal Limit from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
This is not a great book but it is an ok read. The editor should have advised more editing to keep up the suspense! Dora who is a PI has a friend who is run down as she is leaving a hospital. She promises to find out what happened along with her boyfriend, Tucker, who is a policeman. You've got to appreciate Dora😉 She breaks into homes. She places bugs into clothes, cars, offices. I almost started laughing she had so many. Oh what technology can do ! A PI does anything to arrive at the truth!
I listened to the audiobook of this title. I enjoy medical mysteries and the story was interesting. A woman staggers out of a hospital and walks into traffic. Good beginning. The mystery kept me guessing. The narrator was a little distracting She sounded too young for the main character and didn’t do the other characters very well. The detective boyfriend sounded like he was reading a report some of the time. I think I would have enjoyed the story more and followed the characters better if I had read the book instead.
