'Hold That Breath' by Abhirup Dhar is a book based on reality horror. The book consists of 5 short stories of 5 different people. The book starts with the college reunion of 5 friends who visits their old school and finds out that a boy in Dow Hill, Kurseong story might be true.

The book is very well written and I absolutely enjoyed reading all the stories. The book is of hardly 130 pages so definitely can be read in one sitting. And reading a horror in one sitting is the only way to enjoy such a read.

The stories written have a connecting point which is great way to write this book. While reading the entire book, it went with great flow and connectivity of the book is great. It a mixture of all types of horror, like paranormal, psychological, ghosts and various others.

Hold that breath is a collection of six horror stories which is additionally divided into few chapters. Each story holds harrowing experiences of either urban legends or supernatural entities.

What starts out as a normal day or an adventurous trip soon turns nightmare for the characters involved in the story. Everything is explained but in an unique writing style. Sometimes it's the consequences of the main character's actions while other time it's just being in a wrong place at an extremely wrong time but nonetheless this book will satisfy all the paranormal enthusiastic readers.

The stories were given proper and well described origin in order to keep them immaculate. That was helpful because without a good description of the past events, the present story would have made a little sense. I'm glad how much the author effort put in each story to make them stand out from the rest of other horror novels.

I'm not going to choose a favorite from the book because I just cannot. All the six stories contained something that spooked me and I really like reading that. Therefore picking a favorite is impossible.

‘Hold That Breath’ by Abhriup Dhar is a collection of 6 Horror stories each story is further divided into several chapters.

The cover page of the book is very interesting and is related to one of the story from the book. It will surely arouse interest in the mind of the readers. The cover suits the overall theme of the book i.e. horror.

Each story written will surely keep the readers on the edge of their seat and make them ponder what is to happen next. While reading some of the stories I was actually shocked and gave me shivers to know what has actually happened. Each story has a mysterious and horror elements to it which makes the stories interesting to read.

The characters in each story are very relatable. We as human have that curiosity about the other world and if we are told not to do so we are sure to do that only. This factor has been well covered throughout the book. I enjoyed each and every character of the book.

The plot of each story has been well thought and some stories would even make you wonder when did this happen? Overall the plot is very interesting and mysterious. The pace of the stories is perfect neither too fast nor too slow.

The book is written in a simple and lucid language. The readers can easily cover the book in one sitting. Overall I enjoyed reading this book a lot. Looking forward to read more from this author.

A engrossing cover which shows the image of a man in darkness and the title "Hold that Breath" gives a good combination of thrill to the reader mind when one sees the book. I should say both the cover and title sounds a good combination.

Hold That Breath is collection of horror stories which are chained together to give the readers a good spooky time and at the end of the book everything makes it to a complete circle .One of most interesting plot which I felt was "The stair way to Hell." One thing I felt was if you pick each of the short stories one by one it does make it a good read , I should I one reads it in a streak at-least the last three parts you would mange to get that chilling in your spine. Not one of the spookiest book I have ever read , but this should sure give you some goosebumps.

The language and the narration of the plot is above par and to an extend with good grammar. But I personally felt that the breaking up of chapters could have been different so that readers would have enjoyed a little bit more and also a mix of twist and turns could be improvised.

The entire plot taken as whole make it a good reader and the narrative aspects is also commendable. There is nothing specific to dislike , but lots of scope for improvement.

Who doesn't love horror hmm..
This is one hell of a ride with bunch of horror stories which all end up connected to a single story at the end, thrillingly conveyed in a package.

All chiller stories contained the usual horror related stuffs but a way people can enjoy. Was fun to read and narrate.

#Spoiler Alert

The horror as a genre has the most scope of explorations. Be it the inner uncanny-ness or the eerie atmospherics - enthralling the readers with words or color palettes or the sounds has always challenged artists across the mediums. While we have been mostly confined in the trope of jump-scares in case of experiencing horror, the genre has immense possibility and scope.

This book is a collection of few short horror stories connected in a common chain. The third venture of the author who has been good in penning down romance / drama getting into horror is a welcome change. And the good thing is that he has maintained his strength of simple story telling in this genre too.

The reading of this book will give a feel of those rain-drenched power-cut nights with our friends / elderlies sitting around a lantern - telling the ghost stories. Most of those stories had a kind of myth or legend connected to it. So as this one.

It's a simple read. Told in simple words. In simple way. So, it's very easy to connect. You can feel the thrill or almost visualize the story but never getting into the art of complex telling pattern.

I personally liked the story "Ominous". The connect with the other world is being done in a subtle and engrossing way.The author has maintained a twisty pattern of telling the stories. And all of the stories has a supernatural twist at the end. And that's what kicks off well.

As mentioned, the stories here are like those of your grandparents reciting stories. But if you'd have noticed, the art of telling or reciting those stories were mostly relied on the volume modulation or the expressions too. Because that creates the ambience or the atmospherics. And this is what I missed a bit here. The detailing. Sometimes the stories were unduly rushed. The author who in his previous works has given some of the characters that would remain with you for long has somehow showed reluctance in making a character that you'd root for. That would have made the thud of the twists more hard.

But every telling has it's own style. Like the author has created his own in telling his stories in the most simple way possible. Be it any genre. And that carries a unique charm of it's own.

A short collection for horror stories that are independent of each other, yet come together in the final one, in quite an interesting manner. Abhirup Dhar's plotting is reasonably good in each of the tales. Despite the stories being simple, they are not predictable and that, in my opinion, would keep readers hooked and bring a delightful touch.

Horror genre !!

Collection of six chapters in one book. The author has done a lot of efforts and it can be seen in the way of writing itself.

Horror genre is not at all an easy thing to write if the author fails then it wont be a horror genre then,

Cover is sober and of suspense too which is a plus point moreover this book wins the heart as only in few pages only the six short stories has been written well keeping the readers hooked till the end.

Writing style and the sentence formation is also worth reading,.

Worth a try!

Do you remember horror/ ghost stories narrated by the elders/ grandparents/ older siblings.. especially during a power cut.. in those days, when only candle light used to be the source of brightness & added to the spookiness..??
Or
In hostels, when kids used to sneak together..
Or
Watching "Sanaata" or "Band Darwaza" on VCR??

Hold that breath by Abhirup Dhar is a set of six horror stories knitted together by a base story. Horror is definitely not that popular genre in India which is also mentioned in the book. The book proceeds for convincing the producer for incorporating the horror contents in his work. All six stories are independent and sufficient enough to get goosebumps. The stories are regarding life after death, spirits, the ghostly interactions etc.
The stories are very well ordered and composed. The book mostly deals with the paranormal activities instead of the filthy horror. The characters and situations in all the stories are very well build-up. Also the suspence build-up is exceptionally good. Horror is so not my thing but this book has surely redefined the genre for me. The book is a quick read and is recommended to be read when an adrenaline rush is required.

A collection of urban legends distilled in pages. The stories are familiar to us, and, he certainly did a great job narrating them. The familiarity didn't impact the suspense element of the horror. The stories were too short for my liking. However, I liked them. The way things ended in each story had an RL Sline touch to them. Really, I heard goosebumps bgm in my head at each ending. It is simple and its got the desi elements to make us feel familiar with the cultural references. Reading Stephen King, half the time I would need to go online for some references. There is something quite satisfying when the author says something that you actually know. It's like we are part of some elite club.

Book Title: Hold That Breath
Author: Abhirup Dhar
Format: Paperback

Book Title:
The title of the book 'Hold That Breath' is definitely mysterious and spine tickling.

Book Cover:
The cover image of the book is an interesting picture of a man wearing a hood and standing before a big house in dark woods. This certainly gives a scary feeling about the book.

About the author:
Abhirup Dhar was born in Kolkata and has lived in various cities and towns. A banker by profession, he is passionate about writing and has been doing so ever since he was a child. He also has a keen interest in movies and reviewed them for certain portals after which he got his first book out, initially penned for the sheer joy of it – 'Once Again… With Love!', a quirky take on modern-day relationships. He believes the best stories are always the ones simply written from the heart and for the heart! He then celebrated storytelling in his next outing with 'Stories Are Magical' and readers had a fun, relaxing read again. Abhirup is now delving into horror with 'Hold That Breath!', focused to tell different kinds of stories. He currently lives in Mumbai.

About the book:
‘Hold That Breath’ by Abhriup Dhar is a collection of 6 Horror stories each story is further divided into several chapters.

My review:
Being a regular reader of Indian authored English books, two genres that I almost never read is horror and fantasy. Of late I have had a chance to read books based on fantasy and sci-fi genre. I can say this is the first horror book that I read after Stephen King's books in 2019 and to my surprise, the book ' Hold That Breath ' did not disappoint me.

It feels great that new-age Indian authors are trying their hand in diverse genres and themes else after Chetan Bhagat's revolution Indian novels were based only on college romance and chic lit literature.

Coming to the book, ' Hold That Breathe ' I must congratulate the author for writing a book that has interesting 6 horror stories. Each story falls under different categories with themes like a school reunion story, a writer's story, a movie writer's story, a house wife's story, a photographer's story, and a young woman's story.   Though each story is woven on a different thread of plotline when checked there is an inter-relation between the stories. One's end may be another's start or one's start can be another's end or similar to it.

The stories are conceptualized nicely. There is action, suspense, thrill and drama at the turn of every page. The best part of the book is how one story moved from one location, time and people to another and new developments kept happening in the story after every couple of pages. From the very start till the very end, the stories are gripping and nerve-wrecking. The build-up to the climax was excellent and the underlying element of spookiness added to the feeling of suspense and thrill is maintained well.

Since the stories are short I do not want to disclose much about the stories. But it can be taken for granted that the book is an absolute treat for the readers.

Characters:
The characters in the stories are very relatable.

Narration:
Gripping narration is observed in the stories. The psychological aspects of human thinking are dealt logically. The theme of supernatural elements gives a scary feeling.

Language & Grammar:
Simple and colloquial language is found in the book.

My Final Verdict:
A spooky and uncanny book!

Book Title: 4/5
Book Cover: 4/5
Plot: 4/5
Characters: 4/5
Narration: 4/5

Summary:It's basically a collection of 6 stories and I'm giving a brief about each and every story here...
OMINOUS: Shekhar is a struggling writer. He left his well secured job to write novels after his first novel did well in the market. But after that he could not write a single novel that is critically acclaimed or financially profitable. Now when he wants to write about horror genre, his publisher Nirmal gives him this idea to write about reality horror. He plans a reunion with his friends - Nikita, Tanya, Jai and Nirav to go to their alma mater where they had already experienced something unusual 22 years back.... How this reunion turns out to be?

ELEVATOR GAME: I guess everyone knows about the infamous Elevator game. So in this story Mitul and Saachi, the happy couple relocates in Bangalore and comes to this flat where one of the two lifts doesn't work. Neighbors claimed that there had been some spooky incidents happened in the lift in the past and that's why it's closed everytime. Saachi, being the curious one convinces the guard to ride her in the lift once and there she experiences something.... How does the ride turns out to be for Saachi?

THE STAIRWAY TO HELL:Barry Bandeira is a famous photographer, who has returned to India recently. One night on his way to Delhi he had to take a halt and stay at a hotel in Jaipur. Little did he know that the hotel carries it's own curse and Barry will be a victim of it.... What was the curse? How Barry becomes the victim?

SEEING GHOSTS:Abhay is a famous horror story writer and he plans to write a new story in the lap of nature near Lonavla. His wife Asha was to be joining him there after a day to celebrate their 15th marriage anniversary... But one thing leads to another and Abhay finds himself in a hospital. What happened actually?

SHE: Ojas is a rich spoilt brat who lives on his father's money. This weekend he has made a plan to go out with his current girlfriend Jeevika to Jaipur and have fun. He has been a casanova and he has never been with a girl more than 1 week. He has the plan ready to dump her after coming back. But when Jeevika tells a true ghost story on the road trip every thing turns to be unplanned..... What happened there?

THE FINAL ACT: And the last story is this one. This one links each and every story beautifully. The story starts where Dhruv, an aspiring director comes with his script to Raman Chabra, the great producer. What happens next is the main twist and it will make you baffled... So just HOLD YOUR BREATH... !!

My Take:Horror is such a genre that is neglected in India. I have not read many good works in horror. But this book was definitely a good change in that trend. I really liked the story telling style of the author. Each and every story has a different message to give. But somehow I felt that first two stories were better in comparison to the others.
Anyway this was a nice read and I was reading it at night time deliberately to get scared. You should also try to do so... Let me know in the comment section which is your favorite horror story book??

🤔📓
Why read this book?
This book is one big gem of Indian horror genre. If you are in mood to read a horror genre based on an age old Indian horror story narrations then this is a must go!!!
📓📓
It's a book with 6 horror stories more of a thriller based stories that are in a way linked to each other. These stories that revolve around people experiencing paranormal activities, supernatural elements and frightening entities. Each story has its own mystery and it's twists and turns. But if you read or see horror works on daily basis or weekly basis (if you are a huge fan of the genre) you can interpret certain endings. Read the description for more.
👻☠️
Horror in India doesn't sell much like dramas that sell like hot cakes and as a result the books based on horror genre definitely doesn't sell out!!! I remember waiting for Aahat. I would just love how my heart pumped so fast and the feeling of blood rush.
I just love reading horror and thrillers!!! Specially in animated or movie style.... Recently I have started with comics and manga. I love Junji Ito and and in webtoons Youngchan, QQT, Seongdae, kyusam Kim, etc. I dream of seeing Indian author's and comic artists there too displaying the talents of Indian horror story narrations. But frankly finding a horror in the form of novel doesn't make it much appealing like the animated or movies!!!! There are very few author's who can make their horror works really appealing to the readers and make sure that the readers feel their nerves being clenched!!! But frankly speaking since I'm a big fan of horror I usually read a lot of horror works and Abhirup Dhar sir has done a great work of bringing this Indian horror narration. It might not be at the level of Stephen king or Junji Ito. But when I saw that it was his first horror write I believe that we can wait for improvement and see more of his works. But in the context of Indian horror narratives it a really great one out there!!!!
😍💜
Well scripted. Language is easy to understand. In all a very interesting read!!!

Revenge is the purest emotion. The Mahabharata says it.

Book- Hold That Breath
Author - Abhirup Dhar
Genre - Horror

Hold That Breath is a short book of 132 pages which contains 6 Short Creepy Horror stories with themes like Supernatural, other world, schizophrenia, ancient curse and so on.

Omnious - Numerous unnatural deaths have taken place at the forest behind the glenmanor school which is haunted and headless ghost of a boy walking and disappearing into the forest.

The Elevator game- A few years ago a person lost his life in the life and the residents of the building felt the presence of an entity there. Saachi had her plan now as she was a sucker for anything supernatural

The stairway to hell - Once a fort now transformed into a picturesque hotel. Nobody gets out of there alive. An age old practice of offering to please the evil spirit.

Seeing Ghost - Abhay kumar, one of the leading horror fiction writers in the country every night witnesses the plot of the last book that he left incomplete before getting insane

She - It was 11.35pm the delhi-jaipur highway was empty. It was time for SHE...as she probably walked from one side of road to another making jingling sounds of her anklets.

The Final Act- Raman chabra, a film producer meets a talented struggler in a dilapidated cinema hallto hear his horror script.

#review - To be honest this is not the first time that i am hearing or reading such stories. Even in my childhood i have heard and talked about such creepy stories so this was nothing new to me. We friends use to call it ' bhoot ki baatein'. Some stories did manage to scare me while others were just okay types. I like the SHE story. I wish it happens in real...much need in a country like India. The creepy concepts and eerie atmosphere created by the author will keep you on edge of the seat. The cover and title are surely eye catchy. It's a short book which can be completed in few hours.

The book have six stories and every story has spine chilling horror is awaiting for you as it awaited for me and honestly I enjoyed being afraid.

The book have made me hungry to read more ghost stories like this and I liked five stories of the book and sixth one didn't gave me any horrific time it was so so but keeping aside last one all five story was amazing and I am craving for more.

I am not a fan of horror genre but if the book story will be like this I would read it day and night but in night I don't read horror story because you know people I also have to sleep so only in morning I read the horror stories.

The language is quite easy to read and narration I felt could be more better.

I will recommend this one to those reader who loves horror books.

🧛🧛A Tiny Glimpse of the book 🧛🧛

One couple came to enjoy there vacation in hills surrounded by dark forest and the receptionist gave them a warning not to go in the school near the dark forest as there is a rumour that someone is there in night a headless boy and a piano teacher but the man laughed on the receptionist and thinked to go without his wife alone in night when everybody will sleep.

He goes in that forest to see that school which was said to be hunted but he didn't believe it why would he, he is a strong man but his Destiny had other plans awaiting for him and when he met his dark destiny he couldn't stopped himself leaving his body and giving us a glimpse of a journey of horror which starts from this story.

So people start praying god's if you are afraid and if you are not afraid then go look from your own eyes and find your destiny.

Story which can make your spines go chill is awaiting to make you feel afraid.

Happy reading

Qotd - How many of you have listened to Ek Kahani Aisi Bhi??
Well, i have listened to many stories of that show and sometimes they are really scary while few times they become funny.

Hold that breath consists of six stories i. e
1.OMINOUS
2.THE ELEVATOR GAME
3.THE STAIRWAY TO HELL
4.SEEING GHOSTS!
5.SHE
6.THE FINAL ACT

Well sometimes horror becomes funny and that is very well stated in 'the final act' part of this book. Whenever we friend watches a horror movie collectively, we often laugh too. As sometimes to make the movie scary, they make people choose a stupid decision or it might be the fact that even the scariest movie can turn into a funny movie if you are watching with your friend.
Then coming back to the book, the horror in this book will not let you laugh for the unreasonable decisions of people. I really like the 'SHE'. This part is so thoughtful and 'THE FINAL ACT' for me was literally scary especially the end of the chapter. Have you ever heard 'the elevator game'? Well, i have not until I read this book and the game is really interesting but leads to a tragic end in the end. The 'ominous ' is really intriguing and till the end, I could not conclude who are ghosts. The 'Seeing ghost' is a phycological horror story.
The book is a really short read and can be finished in a sitting. Well, try to read in the night time. It is surely gonna scare you if you want to feel a little horror. Writing is easy and narration is smooth. If you are looking for some horror reads, grab and read this book.

Book-Hold That Breath
Author-Abhirup Dhar
Type-Fiction
Format-E Book (Kindle)
Rating-4/5

Hold that Breath by Abhirup Dhar is a breath taking fiction book written in an easy language. A myth was prevailing in the town and a group of friends believed it to be true and to reveal its reality, then came together and decided to go on a check. Their adventure, being topsy turvey, takes them to unimaginable paths and team faces rigid challenges through out the times. Whether they would succeed or not, read this amazing book “Hold That Breath” by Abhirup Dhar.

Book, inter-alia, gives one deep lesson at least which can be seen through its storyline- no matter how small or large the qualm is, always be observant and follow professional skepticim. The more you question a particular thing, the more knowledge you get about that. The story has many more lessons, all you need to do is to read the book and grasp them.

Things I liked
1. Language of the book is easy and comfortable.
2. Plot was well developed and executed. Story revolved around sceptical adventure.
3. Narration style was noteworthy.
4. Book cover was pretty gorgeous and exquisite.
5. Emotions were given a well shape and touched real.
6. Title of the book is apropos for the storyline
7. Characterization was strong and striking. Each character were having far crazy role in the book.
8. Story forwarded in a fitting pace in a flawless style.

There was nothing in this book, which I disliked particularly. Overall book was a good read and I recommend it for book lovers.

Ever since I started reading, horror is my second favourite genre. I'm on a quest to find a good Indian horror book and here's the review of what I encountered on my quest.

Hold That Breath is a collection of Six Short Horror Stories by author Abhirup Dhar. The short review of each story is given below:

1- Ominous- An author, with his friends, tries to investigate his supposedly haunted school for his new book. I didn't like this story because the final twist was same as the movie "The Others".

2- Elevator Game- A couple move into a new house and the wife tries to use the cursed elevator in thi building. This is the best story in this book and the final twist made this story different from other stories based on the same urban legend.

3-Stairway to Hell- An aspiring author arrives at a palace and learns about the curse which haunts the palace. It is a supernatural thriller story. An okay read.

4-Seeing Ghosts- An author spends one last night with his wife on their anniversary. This story had two major twists and I felt that two stories are merged unnecessarily into one.

5- She- Spoilt Rich brats are murdered on a highway by a vengeful ghost of a woman who was raped and murdered on the same highway by a rich guy. There are countless stories similar to this, hence nothing new.

6-The final act- It is revealed that all the previous stories were part of a film script which a writer is narrating to a producer. This story could have been better but it has far too many unnecessary twists which makes it an average read if not bad.

The problem with this book is that there are too many twists, which make it difficult to create an atmosphere for horror.
My rating 2 stars.

As a word of warning hold your breath for this one!

Hold that Breath by Abhirup Dhar justifies its title in every sense possible. Six short yet thrilling stories will keep you on your toes for what’s coming next. It will make you question the “other world” and will leave you curious. Different places and different scenarios make it diverse and gripping where the characters in the book are the people you meet in your day to day life, creating a good link between the book and the reader. The book is a voyage from your real world to a spooky school reunion, a curiosity filled elevator game turned grey, a curious photographer, a trip with fascinating true horror story and a conversation between a script writer and a producer with a twist. While one of the stories does give away the suspense early, rest will make up for it. The overall narrative of the book is catchy and simple, and is placed in known places, drawn around everyday situations, making it quite relatable. However, the narrative would have become more interesting if the author left one of the stories open ended for the readers to dwell in the mystery a little longer (well, maybe in his future works). Looking forward to his next one.

Overall, it is a short read one can finish while stuck in traffic or a lazy weekend afternoon. If you are not intrigued with the cover of the book, trust me, wave off your judgement and buy this one. It is indeed a good purchase.

Book Name- Hold That Breath
Author- Abhirup Dhar
Review- Hold That Breath is novel of Horror genre. I really like horror genre books and am a huge fan of horror films. I always crave for an extra twist or something new in the story, something which is different from the basic horror stories. The book is a short read still the author has maintained the crispiness of the story and has done justice to the genre. It is a collection of short stories which are connected. The stories start from simple beginning of belief in ghost and the twists and turns are unexpected. I really liked the ending of each and every story and had goosebumps while revealing the fate of the characters. I really liked the concept of reunion of friends at their school and it gave all nostalgia vibes but the turn of events were worth reading. My favorite out of all the short connecting stories was the elevator game, the name itself is spooky enough. I liked the mention of cursed places and every place had it’s own story. Though it was a short read it had a lot of stories with different backgrounds which gave me creepy vibes and all the stories were really interesting. The title is the real catch of the book and gives those spooky vibes.

TITLE: Hold Your Breath
AUTHOR: Abhirup Dhar
STYLE: First Person Narration
RATING: 3/5.
GENRE: Horror, Short Stories
REVIEW:
The book opens in an Indian background with a couple going for their honeymoon, were like a classic horror story background the hotel staff advises the couple not enter the forest beyond the school as it is believed to be haunted. The husband goes off into the wood to wonder, the places that were believed by the folks to be haunted. While wandering into the wilderness he encountered something hat rendered home speechless and sent shivers down his spine. What does he see.? Does he encounter the ghost or is pranced by his wife? The answer lies in your copy of ‘Hold your Breath.’
It is sweet crisp and a collection of stories. The first author narration gives this genre a completely new canvas to paint a picture to blow the mind of the readers away. The author has done a commendable job in his novel keeping the language simple to understand and visualize. This genre not much work is found, this book introduces it to you in a really short subtle way but leaving an everlasting impact on our brain. I personally felt the novel is quite nice and it was bliss reading it. For those who are a bit scared of the ghosts not read it before going to bed. It’s kind of hard to get the ghosts out of your head.

I am not into the horror genre but when I read this book I was totally hooked. This book has 6 stories and each one of them is superbly thrilling! The stories have something strange and mysterious that makes it look even more gripping.
I finished this book in one sitting and that too just an hour or so. Well, that will tell you how interesting the stories were.
Each of these stories remind you of something that you have heard during the school times or when someone talks about something strange happening is a certain place.
Finally you get to see a link between the stories or is there really a link? Do grab the book to find out!
What I really liked about this book -The best part is that this book belongs to the horror genre but it is not super scary or wants you to stop reading to turn around and keep an eye out for supernatural beings! It is indeed horror genre without any of those gory thing! I would even let my 12 year old read this one!
After reading this book, I definitely want to explore more of this genre provided it is dealt in the same manner as in this book.
My rating would be 5 stars for the wonderful plot in each of these stories and each of them written so well in a simple, easy to follow language.
