I skim read this as I understood it told of the death of Colonel von Dodenburg which isn’t strictly true. After reading about the Ardennes offensive I was feeling how could this dovetail in ? Well …. Badly. There are books around about the real event, I’d spend your effort on those. Some of the language in this book is disgusting. I wish I had read better books in my youth but these did get me reading.

Germany was on the verge of the defeat. To her starving civilians and disheartened soldiers it seemed as if all hope were dead. To Roosevelt victories butcher's it looked as if the moment of revenge had come at last.
But in the terrible winter of 1944 the Fuhrer had a last, devastating card to play: a new offensive in the West through the mountain passes and snow heavy forests of the Ardennes. The objective: the bridge over the Meuse at Huy. The men to take it Battle Group Wotan, last survivors of Hitlers hated SS, led by Colonel von Dodenburg. They were the toughest troops in Europe, and they had only one chance left to save the Fatherland and their own skins.
He killed Kuny. The author killed Kuno von Dodenburg. Seriously the end of this book was as bad as you can imagine, but on the other hand von Dodenburg was not exactly on the winning side. The plot is simple and the goal is to get the bridge over the Meuse at Huy. It failed miserably and another hero was killed poor little Matz, but his end was better then his commander. The subplot was turning around the incident of killing the American POW.
