The illustrations in this story of a young girl identifying with a bullied squirrel are muted, almost sepia toned, which is very evocative of someone looking back to childhood memories. The style of illustration reminds me of one of my favourite artists, Shirley Hughes. The prose is wistful and lyrical and this is a book to be treasured and enjoyed for many years.
A story of memory, subdued and understated. An empathy and common ground between a young, bullied, girl and a bullied squirrel. The fate of the squirrel is unknown.
