A Scandalous Proposition: A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Following her rejection of Mr. Darcy’s proposal at Hunsford, Elizabeth has time for reflection and soon realizes she misjudged Darcy and is in love with him. Before she can convey the sincerity of her affections, her life is thrust into turmoil with the death of Mr. Bennet. Facing a life of reduced circumstances and insecurities, Lizzy pleads with Darcy to give her a second chance to accept his proposal. Instead, he agrees to care for her family, but he no longer wants marriage. Lizzy will be his mistress if she wants his assistance. With few options, and harboring the small hope he might come to love her again, she accepts his scandalous proposition. This is a sensual “Pride & Prejudice” variation suitable only for adults who don’t object to intimacies between ODC.

Readable but not good. Ok for a free KU read.

From a Regency perspective the author makes a lot of mistakes. Lizzy travelling alone, the Bennets accepting a house from Darcy, and especially Jane and Lizzy living at Pemberley would all have ruined their reputations without Lizzy ever sleeping with him. Bingley and Jane both living at Pemberley while engaged would also have caused a scandal. Everyone is Miss *firstname*, which makes it sound like it’s set in the southern US, instead of Miss *surname* for oldest/only unmarried sister and Lady C is mistakenly called Lady deB. It took Lizzy 3 days to travel from Longbourn to Pemberley but only 2 from Pemberley to London. Regency condoms needed to be soaked in water for a couple of hours but Darcy just takes it out of a bag. Mourning customs didn’t seem to be followed, though that wasn’t totally clear. There was also a few quite modern, anachronistic terms used.

The story itself didn’t really hold up. There’s no way Lizzy would have been so forward. She doesn’t seem in love with Darcy and often thinks about him with dislike in their early encounters. While Darcy’s proposition has satisfactory reasoning, Lizzy doesn’t really have to accept it for financial reasons (she has options) and her accepting it for love doesn’t hold up while she’s being so cold. The author calls it “steamy”, but while there are sex scenes most are pretty unemotional and lacking in steam. Darcy is an asshole who frequented brothels and told Lizzy about it. There is more emotion towards the end, and a quite good scene where Lizzy tries (successfully) to make Darcy jealous by teasing him about running a brothel and he responds quite passionately.

There are a lot more realistic and more steamy mistress variations out there.

This was a steamy, I will be your mistress to save my family version of Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth visits Pemberley to ask if she can change her answer from Hunsford, Darcy doesn't believe that she actually loves him. Convinced she is mercenary, he proposes to take care of her mother and sisters if she will be his mistress. He assumes he will get bored quickly.

The story is novella length and our dear couple eventually finds their happily ever after.

This is a steamy variation of Pride and Prejudice, so for die hard fans...it may not be your cup of tea. Although steamy, it is a cute, fast read. Mr Darxy's proposition is scandalous, but he has his reasons. There were a few editing mistakes, but I could figure out what was meant.
