This book collects the back-up strips from the main Aero and Sword Master books. These are a story with Sword Master teaming-up with Shang-Chi and Ares to take on an ancient Asian deity and another tale of Aero teaming-up with Wave to tackle an evil corporation run by a mermaid, if you can believe that.

I don’t mean to be dismissive; these back-up strips are in some ways better than the main books. The plots are a little more in-depth, everybody is pretty much in character, the art is decent (if not spectacular) and at no point does it feel like it’s about to turn into tentacle-porn (yes, I’m talking about you, main Aero story).

This being said, the whole thing feels workmanlike rather than inspired and as you get to the end of each story you realise the whole thing (in both stories) is just a prelude to the upcoming ‘Atlantis Attacks’ mini-series.

[Read in single issues]

So I didn't read the Sword Master half of this trade. So this review is just based on the Aero/Wave story.

It definitely benefited from reading straight through. I read the first half as it came out and started to get confused by how choppy the story was.

Just found out that Fonda Lee co wrote this graphic novel~
A fan of the art 😍😍😍
And since I'm novice to this, I enjoy the story so far. Finished in one setting~
Plot wise, it's a bit jumpy but it's alright

This compilation of additional stories related to various Asian heroes turned out to be an interesting collection of adventures, so credit to Greg Pak for really having a vision for these characters. And as much as both stories are technically lead-ins to the new Atlantis Attack event, they still stand pretty solidly on their own.

I really do like the tandem of Aero and Wave, something that you wouldn't necessarily appreciate given the actual political situation between their home countries. I wasn't a fan of Aero's solo title, but there's really something about the way Pak characterizes Aero and Wave as a sort of duo.

The Shang-Chi/Sword Master story was the weaker one - there's something about the way they depict Shang-Chi that lacks the gravitas of him being the master of kung-fu or whatever. And Sword Master still has a LONG way to go before he becomes a truly viable character, but this book contributes strongly to trying to depict his growth.

For a book titled Origins & Odysseys, there aren't really any origin stories involved in this volume, which collects the back-up stories from the first six issues of the Aero & Sword Master solo series.

The Aero story is technically an origin, though it's for Wave instead of Aero herself, which is an odd choice. It's a decent little team-up, though nothing overly exciting aside from some queer mermaids. The Sword Master story is slightly better, dragging Shang-Chi and Ares into Sword Master's quest to find his missing father. Both stories are also pseudo-set-ups for Atlantis Attacks!, the next place both Aero and Sword Master show up after their own books end.

Okay, I guess, but not really what it says on the tin.

Love the Agents of Atlas getting to be fleshed out more!

Aero and Wave's story is short and moderately interesting! Cool progressive character work!

Sword Master's is really interesting with its mixture of Greek and Asian gods and mythologies! Sword Master shows himself to be another headstrong and brazen Marvel hero, but it's entertaining having a experienced veteran like Shang-Chi constantly breathing down his neck and trying to guide him!
