10/25/2017 ** I found this book in my library collection and decided to review with the possibility of weeding it from the collection. Ultimately, I decided to weed it:
- The Native Americans are shown wearing furs, when contemporaneous paintings show them with leather and cotton cloth.
- The chief is shown in a feather head-dress consistent with Plains Indians (i.e. Sioux), rather than the style of attire worn by members of Pocahontas' tribe.
- There are more current and culturally authentic depictions of famous Native Americans now available.

It’s an old book so I didn’t have high hopes to begin with. The story is at least more accurate than the Disney version but still written from a slightly slanted perspective with some facts I will need to research more to judge for accuracy. Regardless, I think I will use it in my classroom as a comparison tool on historical writings and studying perspective as well as accuracy in historical writings.

A story of a famous girl who helped feed the English colonists at Jamestown. The history of the United States was impacted by this woman. This excellent biography of Pocahontas shows the Native American perspective. I used this book to introduce Jamestown to a group of elementary students, who had several good questions about her role. A common one was, "why did she help these people?". That question will go down in history. A fair look at a difficult time. Another comment from a kid "its very different from the movie...".

A good read through or read-aloud for children. Pictures on each page spread.

Ages: 6 - 11

The kids really liked the story of Pocahontas. They were upset by the way here father behaved.

And amazed that someone would trade a girl for a kettle.
They were very sad that she died so young.
