And ten years later? Mason Payne is still the same. The only thing that's changed ... is me. And I'm not for the better. In fact, I'm way worse than he can imagine.
Mason and McKenna were mortal enemies in high school. Mason made her life a living hell, pulling pranks and being a total asshole bully. McKenna saw through his bullshit though to realize things at home were really bad for him. His dad was a criminal who beat him and he protected his little brother who kept getting into drugs. When McKenna catches Mason fooling around with a teacher, the teacher tells her she will write stellar letters to Yale if she will keep it under wraps and tutor Mason so he passes and graduates. McKenna tutors Mason in her basement. Her mother died. Her father is never home, usually off with his new wife spending lots of money. McKenna and Mason have a wild attraction to each other and start a secret relationship where the screw on top of her dads car and then all over the house when dad isn’t home. But then Mason ruins it like he always does and is absolutely rotten to her on prom night, leaving her by the side of the road after setting her up to be bullied by the mean girls at school. Fast forward ten years. Mason made it big with his band and is out of the hood and rolling in cash. McKenna’s father ended up being a criminal involved in a Ponzi scheme and is in jail. McKenna only got one semester at Yale before all the money was gone and she was ostracized. That’s when she met Dee and started hooking. Now she’s a high paid, high class prostitute. At some party that she’s at with a guy paging her, she runs into Mason who is there with his band. The band is about to go on an 8 week tour oversees. Mason figures out what’s up and offers McKenna $250,000 to escort him for the tour. But she has one more job lined up. She meets up with this Giles guy and it turns out he knows everything about her and blackmails her about her dad and shit saying that if she doesn’t pay up he will out her and have her dad killed. So she goes on tour with Mason for the money. They try to get to know each other again but there’s tons of drama and then the media figures out she’s a prostitute and everything goes to hell halfway through the tour. She comes back to New York and meets up with Giles but it turns out Giles leaked the info to the press and doesn’t really plan to help her out at all, he just want to own her. Mason follows her to meet with Giles. Masons brother knows some hackers and the figure out that Giles is bad and that shit is out of control. Mason ends up walking in while McKenna is strapped to a table and Giles is prodding her with a hot iron. Mason saves the day, kicks Giles’s ass and sets up all his bank accounts to empty out with his brothers help. Mason and McKenna make up and decide to be together. McKenna gets a book deal HEA.

I think I can honestly say that I've never worked as hard to feel empathy for an anti-hero as I did for Mason in this book. I've read many bully romances before, but this one really drove home the point that Mason's tortured childhood brought out a sick, twisted, sociopathic side to him, and McKenna was the unfortunate victim/target of his most vicious and demeaning attacks, even after she started tutoring him (because she was being blackmailed into it) and even after they started sleeping together. Yeah, I get that he had to have an outlet for his rage against life and that somehow McKenna could still see the tiny grain of goodness buried deep, but she was so thoroughly traumatized by him and his friends throughout high school that I really couldn't understand her attraction to him at all.
Years later, Mason is hugely successful with his band and McKenna, having had her dreams spoiled by her father's criminal activities, is making her own way with a successful, though risky, business. Yet when he runs into her again, all he can think about is how she's too good for the life she's living and he must save her from it so that he can continue to see her on the pedestal in his mind. I would have preferred to see that he respected her and her choices, just a little, rather than just watch him demean her more all while insisting that he knows what she needs and that she must return to being the "good" girl that he remembers.
The end was a little rushed, his coming to her rescue seemed to precede his acquiring the information necessary to do so, and their decision to finally work together as a couple at the end felt like the beginning of a relationship rather than an HEA. And of course her career choices were conveniently taken away from her, so there's no conflict about that. What she'll do now (other than being Mason's publicly disgraced groupie) is not even hinted at. Hopefully, we'll get a little more resolution as the band's story continues in the next book. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
McKenna she's not a very good girl she used to be but a twist of fate turned her from a collage coed with a future to a high priced call girl. Mack is both tragic and strong both likable and hate able but she starts out so small and wounded she grows but not without some major bumps in the road she travels. Both McKenna and Mason are broken but perfect for each other in there imperfections Mason is both her tormentor, her bully her lover her reason for never trusting and her savior he's her perfect anti hero and both the worst and best mistake she ever made. And when fate brings them together Mack as her later ego Jane and Mason as a huge rockstar there passion and hate burst of the page he wants to save her she doesn't want to be saved and with powers working against them Mack will be glad she let him back in her very life and freedom will depend on it.
Mason I hated him but was drawn to his character he was like a train wreck that you can't look away from as a young man he gets off on others pain because he has plenty of his own pain and Mac is his favorite victim one he can't stay away from she's his drug of choice and every once in awhile you get a glimpse of a good person but just a glimmer and it's a good thing because of what's to come Mack doesn't need a white night she needs a very Dark and dangerous one. And I can honestly say for anyone that reads this book by the end of this book you will freaking love him. I loved to hate this book I couldn't put it down and I really hope the next book about Wyn will catch up with Mack and Mason.
I was allowed to receive and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Filled with rage stemming from the abusive environment he has grown up in, Mason takes great joy in bullying McKenna, with some of the pranks his cohorts play on her ranging from hazing to illegal. When he realizes he needs Mack's help to graduate, he begins to open himself up to her and shed some of the anger he uses to insulate himself from everyone around him. Mack becomes his anchor, protector and lover until his rage gets the better of him and he pushes her away.
A decade has passed and Mason stumbles across Mack backstage at one of his band's shows. He realizes Mack is going down a dangerous path and is determined to save her. He's never found the love and support she was so willing to give ten years ago and while he might not be the one to love her back, he won't allow her to continue in the way she has been. He's going to save her, whether she wants to be saved or not. Beneath the anger and generally bad attitude, Mason hides a good heart.
After a series of traumatic events, Mack's life has taken a turn she never would have seen coming in high school. She no longer sees the good in herself and cannot seem to walk away from a life that is both dangerous and hollow. Her dreams of an Ivy League education are long gone. When Mason stumbles back into her life, she can't help but accept his offer of help. Along the way, Mason, who has never really learned how to love treats Mack poorly. While his intentions are good, he continues to hurt Mack with his words and actions. She feels so trapped that she is a bit of a doormat and takes his abuse.
Mason's struggle to become a better man and learn how to protect Mack's fragile heart is his redemption. His words and actions are nothing short of cruel through much of this story. This messed up love story between Mack and Mason is a bit of a difficult read at times due to this rough treatment, but the growth in these two characters made it worth the read.
I really struggled with this one. I went back to the beginning to verify that there were, in fact, NO trigger warnings listed. There absolutely should have been!!
Bullying! SEVERE bullying. Sex abuse (he's 18 - but she's his teacher)
And that's just the beginning. My emotions were all over the place with this one. Mason is an absolute dick the entire book. In HS, he dumps food and drinks on McKenna, terrorizes her with threats and name calling, corners her, and forces sexual touches on her before exposing her to the whole school. He's sick and admits to getting his rocks off treating her that way.
The author tries to draw sympathy for Mason: he's got a bad home life, his dad beats him, mom seems to be absent, brother is an addict, etc. And I think in some ways she succeeds in doing so - but that's because she makes Mack feel pity and sympathy, and the reader can't help but try and see it through her eyes. They end up forging a tense weird friendship because she agrees to tutor him, and he stops being nasty at school (just ignores her instead). That eventually leads to a secret sexual relationship. But Mason blows everything up on prom night, and they go their separate ways (McKenna to Yale, Mason to wherever his band takes him).
Fast fwd 10-ish years, and Mason is famous, while McKenna has fallen on hard times. Her dad went to prison for financial crimes, making her have to drop out of Yale. She's now a sex worker. Mason finds out, and the tables are turned as he tries to save her from herself.
He's still an ass. He's still a bully.. but now it's him seeking connection and her trying to keep distance.
I grew to like Mason, a bit, against my better judgment.. but he's still a jerk.
Definitely a different take on the usual rockstar romance. This is the story of Mason and McKenna who have known each other since childhood. Mason got his kicks in high school by bullying quiet bookish McKenna and getting his posse to do the nastiest things to her. All of this made her life a living hell and she couldn't wait to get away to college. After catching Mason with their teacher in an uncompromising situation McKenna is further bullied into tutoring Mason. Once they start meeting she sees more of the boy under all the bullying and realizes that he has a tough home life and tries to help him. They get closer and become friends and maybe more, but that illusion is shattered for McKenna at graduation.
Ten years later life has greatly improved for Mason, he is now a member of a world famous rock band. Life for McKenna after graduation did not go the way she planned and has not been easy. Now she works as a high class call girl and this causes her to cross paths with Mason. When Mason finds out how her life is now he wants to rescue her, and offers to give her a ton of money to go on tour with him and leave that life behind. Can McKenna trust him this time or will it all be a cruel joke? As she is being threatened and needs the money she takes his offer but keeps her distance trying her best not to get hurt again.
I had a really hard time believing that Mason had changed after the cruelty that he inflicted on McKenna during their childhood. I think the guilt he felt from the way he treated her has caught up to him, and at the same time he knows that he owes her.
McKenna comes across as someone who has been through hell and has learned that she can only depend on herself. She keeps her distance from others, even adopting an alter ego when she sees her clients. Is it this now fiercely independent woman that Mason falls in love with or is the girl from high school that he left behind? Can these two damaged souls find forgiveness and their forever's in each other, or will circumstances tear them apart. A great read that was hard to put down.
Wow this story goes beyond bullying and harsh words I hated how Mason treated McKenna in high school then because Mason needed to graduate he ended up being nice to McKenna and her lover. Years later Mason runs into McKenna backstage at one of his concerts but McKenna is different she’s not the same innocent girl she once was and she’s heading for a load of trouble and that’s when Mason decides to help her but Mason hasn’t changed now instead of being called a bully he’s a bad boy. Wow I don’t know what to feel about this story so I’m going to be straight up with these characters. McKenna has no self esteem she had that knocked out of her a long time ago so I’m not surprised that she would take Mason’s abuse, now Mason boy was he something and a bully was putting it mildly he thrived on people’s pain and McKenna was his no 1 drug of choice. I liked this story but I hated Mason with a passion but both characters were damaged and broken so be warned that this is more than just bullying although Mason tried to find redemption in McKenna he does have a heart he just doesn’t know how to use it.
★ Twisted and tumultuous bully romance - Angst and emotion in spades ★
—>>> Mason is one tortured soul, and he does not know what to make of the rich and beautiful girl he latches on like a desperate survivor to a life raft, but that is what he does with McKenna. He soon become addicted to being cruel to his Big Mac, and taking what he can get from her - everything. But now, many years later, the circumstances smothering him have changed, although now he can admit it is a hollow victory, with two of his 3 band mates finding significant others. Seeing McKenna again, he wants a second chance to redeem himself for all the hurt and anger he had speared her with, an innocent which he had taken utmost advantage of. Puzzled with her new profession as an exclusive call girl, the only way Mason can figure he could wedge himself back into her life was to make an offer she simply cannot refuse. Angst and emotion in spades, this is a twisted and tumultuous bully romance of a girl who loves unconditionally and the broken boy who always needed her to be whole.
Something about total life destruction by the hand of another that doesn't tell redemption in my eyes. Regardless of later actions
"You make me do that and I'll never forgive you"
" Wait don't go, stay and love me" Dude. She literally told you moments before if you made her go through with it she'd hate you. *The above quotes are paraphrased for brevity.
Then the twat goes and forgives him almost immediately
The more I read the lower I want to rate this. But I can't rate less than 1 star!
How is Brax that big of an idiot. Seriously. Could the author not have written another way for it to spill? Him being that stupid just doesn't make sense especially with all the times MMC says how well his brother knows him.. so he should know his ex and he were on bad terms
I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about McKenna and Mason. He's a boy from the wrong side of town and she's the daughter of a CFO. It has been ten years since high school but the name, Mason Payne still strikes a cord with McKenna Beckley. And vice versa for Mason. These two have a history that breaks your heart and makes you see red. Mason has become a very successful musician where McKenna went away to college and is now a high class call girl. This story is about how the tables can turn and how quickly life can turn. Can these characters rely or even trust one another to help the other? Is it possible to find happiness? The past is dangerous waters but can it be water under the bridge? Enjoy!

Clearly I’m a glutton for punishment because I can’t stop reading this series despite it being pretty bad. Sooo much build up all for it to end abruptly and without closer on so many details.
Mason was her childhood bully, now grade A celebrity asshole. She’s covering her tortured party by braking a call girl. Why she even tolerates him fin is beyond me.
Also, WTF?! The author writes under different names and at least a few of the books go by multiple names. Very confusing. But it doesn’t stop there, the books are listed in different orders almost everywhere so look. I feel like I’ve lost my mind.
Ok this is the first book that I've ever read by Ketley Allison and it won't be my last....maybe i should've started with a different one but this was pretty awesome! Mason was a total a$$hole when they were in high school. But the more i read about him, the more i realized that he was this way bc he never knew any better. That's how he was raised. And then Mack...she was just trying to find her way after being bullied for so long....glad i read this book.. Had so many twist and turns but was a very good book
Mason and McKenna knew each other in high school and he was her bully but also her first love/lover. He is a hard guy to Ike for most of the story but so is she. She became an escort/call girl when her father goes to jail for embezzlement. They have a very rough road including a blackmailer and jealous exes to the realization of their Feelings. Would have loved an epilogue.

First book to be read bu Ketley Allison. I loved how she portrayed Mack. Strong, fiesty, independent despite her being bullied by her crush. Mason and Mack are a couple on a whole other level. I do wish though the author would've given a better ending. She just left alot unsaid. What happend to Giles and Jess? What about the band? The end didnt do it for me. However I do plan to read the series
McKenna is a good girl but that changed once she was out of high school and through college. McKenna went down a road that no one ever should have to go down. Mason is rock-star and who made life difficult for McKenna when they were in high school together. Can McKenna and Mason forget there past and move forward? Can McKenna give Mason a second chance? Great read and I loved there story.

A riveting read that pulled me in from the first page. It is well written, well thought out, raw, emotionally wrenching, and will tug on your heart strings. There are twists, suspense, drama, ups and downs, and more keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters you will like and hate but their growth is obvious through out the story; their chemistry is off the charts. Definitely recommended!

Book 2 in this series was a let down. Story okay, but the telling left lots of room for improvement. At times especially towards the end a lot of bla, bla, bla - I found myself having to skip thru a paragraph or two. And then something would happen that caught my attention again until it didn’t. At times I wasn’t sure the main characters were even sure what they were mad about especially in the final chapters.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is an interesting story. I feel that the characters needed to be developed more. The book has the potential to be a great story with some changes. Too much time spent on delving into the high school past and not enough on the present.

McKenna and Mason both have tongue lashing down to a perfect art. Ketley obviously is good at what she does because the banter between these two is priceless and hilarious. They just don’t know how to just be. But at least they figures it out in the end.
I was loving this series but this book made me so angry, I couldn't continue and DNF at 35%. The H treated the h like SHIT, both in the past and the present and I hated him so much, there was no way that he could redeem himself. (From what I read in other reviews, he doesn't.)
It's really confusing that this book has an alternate title - "Strum Me".
Interesting plot. I didn’t think it was going there after reading part 1. The bully romance was great. I really enjoyed that aspect and how emotional it was to see mason in such state. The spice could have been a bit hotter. The audio was good
Guy was a douche nozzle. He didn’t really redeem himself or change. Felt like the back story could have gone deeper, because I didn’t feel any real love between the two even during the present portion of the story. Had potential but fell REALLY short.
I love this series, these characters are all damaged, but it is that fact that makes the series interesting to me. I love reading love stories, but I prefer my love stories to have an edge and I found that with this book, can't wait for the next one.
That's the main reason for my 3 stars. I don't think I've ever read a bully story before, but I've read this series and the previous so I kept going with this one. Just not for me. Nothing wrong with the writing or anything, it's personal choice
I enjoyed Mason & Mckenna's story. And felt for McKenna. I tried to like Mason...but have a love/hate thing with his character. It was an entertaining read. I received a free copy of the book. And am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Mac always tried to save Mason in high school, but he always picked on her. Yet she always tried to help him. Years later he tracks her down and gives her an offer she cant refuse. Will Mac make it through unscathed or wil! she be forever cleaning up messes?
Not sure why McKenna would even entertain Mason after what happened. I enjoyed the story - the bit just before the ending was horrifying but the level of naivety demonstrated by McKenna was astonishing considering her career.
Usually I don’t read high drama books until the end, but for one reason or another this one was kind of interesting. E.g the overall idea of how his terrible behavior towards her (and really terrible — one of the worst I’ve seen of the hero) made her go the dark path which he then wanted to stop.
