This is a deeply inspiring missionary biography that brings the life of Hudson Taylor vividly to life. Through many trials—losing children, the death of his beloved wife, physical hardship, and constant opposition—Taylor’s unwavering faith and love for the Chinese people shine through. Again and again, the story shows his determination to trust God and his single-minded desire to see the people of China come to faith, no matter the personal cost.

What makes this book especially wonderful is how accessible and engaging it is. I read it aloud to my nine-year-old, and she thoroughly enjoyed the story, which speaks to the clarity and warmth of Davey’s writing. This is a beautiful introduction to missionary biography for younger readers, while still being deeply encouraging for adults. I highly recommend it as an uplifting and faith-strengthening read.

This is a strangely laconic book. Who would think you could tell the story of Hudson Taylor and almost never mention Jesus Christ? Taylor's conversion is described without any mention of repentance, faith, Jesus Christ, new life, etc.... Quite an achievement – in its way!
