Protecting His Witness

I have to start by saying that I absolutely LOVE Amy Gamet! She is just an incredible author. That being said Protecting His Witness is the first book in the Shattered SEALS series. This story had me hooked from the very beginning. Luke and Summer have a very long twisted sad road to get to their Happily Ever After. If you loved HERO Force then this is a must read. I cannot wait to see what comes next for these guys.

While the characters in Protecting His Witness are interesting (an ex-Navy SEAL and a literal rocket scientist, plus a retired military working dog), the plot takes way too many twists and turns getting to the end. Seriously, Summer's dad gets kidnapped so often he should be fitted with GPS. The book was a nice, easy read, and not a bad book, but it had the potential to be much more.

Actual rating 3.5 ⭐. This was fine but nothing that surprised me. I liked the characters, the villain was a bit predictable but the writing was good and it was fun to read.

Protecting His Witness by Amy Gamet
A Hero Force Novel: Shattered SEALS #2

Interesting premise to have SEALs that have left the military “shattered” work together with purpose in a new group giving them purpose and a focus for the future. One such SEAL is Luke Arroyo or Wiseman. They are called in to assist Summer Daniels after a bomb goes off, her alloy is destroyed, a vital compound is stolen and her life is threatened.

In the past Luke and Summer corresponded while he was in Afghanistan – pen pals that enjoyed the letters they received from one another. When Summer realizes Luke is Wiseman – the man she once wrote to and grew to care about – she requests him to be her bodyguard. Luke is equally interested in Summer but has a secret that he is sure will put her off if he shares it.

This story has theft, bombings, kidnappings, injuries, death and more as the team work together to find the bad guy and keep Summer safe. I did have a bit of trouble, as a nurse, seeing Luke doing some of the things he did so soon after the injury he sustained but perhaps he has Terminator healing abilities that were not mentioned in the book? I look forward to reading more in this series as the heroes are somewhat broken but still very swoon worthy ;)

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Sigh! A tragic, gothic hero. Be still my girlish heart. I love a hero in uniform. Make him flawed yet redeemable and I think he's irresistible. This is Luke to a “T”. Summer appeals to every nerd-girl part of me. She’s sassy and feisty and so bloody smart. She has a quiet innocence about her that nicely balances against Luke’s battle-weariness. I loved the push-pull, will-they/won’t-they through the whole story. A couple of recent books I’ve read kept the romance and the intrigue as two separate plot lines that occurred independently at completely different times in the story. This is what I wanted those books to be. The budding relationship between Summer and Luke heightens the tension as they try to protect her life and her research. And the growing intrigue and tension intensifies the chemistry between the pair. It almost killed me, and my reader nearly learned how to fly, while watching them fight so hard against their attraction. This is a brilliant start to this new spin-off series and I can’t wait to read more about the men of HERO Force New York.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.

This story begins the spinoff series appropriately titled, Shattered SEALs. If you have read the HERO Force stories, you know their main office is in Atlanta. This new branch is in NYC. This group of former Navy SEALS are rightly called, shattered SEALS. Each one of them, from Mac their leader on down, has suffered physical and/or emotional injuries. They have now been given a chance to do what they love, even though they are not “perfect”.
Luke/Wiseman Arroyo is one of these men. But due to his guilt and his injury he was ready to quit when he is called to protect a witness. Summer Daniels. is not only someone he corresponded through emails during his time in the Middle East, but also the sister of his deceased friend, Edward. A man whose death he feels responsible for.
The interaction between these two and the twists and turns of the plot will keep you entertained. Though at times , the rollercoaster ride felt more like an abrupt stop and go. Still it was engaging.
I tend to be a picky reader and I found distracting some of the inconsistencies and/or lack of explanation. Without giving away the plot, in one instance , four men are injured, but only 3 are mentioned to have been transported by ambulance. Later the one not mentioned shows up, so we know he’s fine, and one of the ones with a leg injury, Moto, is walking fine 12 days later with no comment about his injuries. I also felt that the author could have given us a little background on the new HEROs men so we would be looking forward to other stories.
Still , it was a good story and a series I will continue reading. For all if the above, it was more a 3 star, but I respect the author’s talent, so I’ll give it a 4 star.
This was and advance copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Foul language

Author uses the Lords name in vain! The story get weird near the end. Bad guy get shot in the head, has his body split in two but still ends up in police custody. Bad mans sister appears at end of story but no mentioned of her throughout. New characters pop up in the last few pages and you are left hanging with Mac's search. I doubt I will read anything else from this author.

I received a free complimentary book and voluntarily reviewed it.

This is the first book in Amy Gamet’s new “Shattered Seals” series. It is a spin off from her popular “A Hero Force” series, although you don’t have to have read the first series to enjoy this one.

Amy Gamet skillfully writes about a former SEAL, Luke “Wiseman” Aroyo, who has PTSD, which causes him to feel inadequate and unworthy. Most of these feelings are based on a horrific secret he carries from his days as a SEAL. In spite of all of this, Ms. Gamet does a fantastic job of showing Luke as the hero he really is.

Summer Daniels is a scientist who has taken over her family’s business from her elderly sick father, also a scientist. Her father has discovered a rare element that has been stolen during the explosion.

Summer appeals to the Shattered Seals organization for help, because her late brother was a SEAL who died in action. As it turns out, Luke “Wiseman” Arroyo, a friend of Summer’s brother is a part of that group although Summer doesn’t realize it is him until later.

Summer had been corresponding to Luke, under his SEAL name “Wiseman,” while he was overseas except that he, abruptly, cut off their correspondence after Summer’s brother died.

This is an exciting suspense with lots of intrigue and mystery. I loved every twist and turn because the author, adeptly, puts “red herrings” in the way to keep the readers in suspense. There was a time when I thought we had discovered the protagonist, and the problem was solved. In fact, I was wondering what would happen in the rest of the book. That was until I realized that the “bad guy” was still causing trouble.

Summer is a good match for Luke because she sees him as a hard-working hero. She refuses to view him any other way, and doesn’t allow him to see himself that way either.

This author leaves us with a different kind of ending. Although it has the necessary HEA, it ends a little bit differently from the norm.

Started out okay .........

This started pretty well,- I liked smart, funny Summer and Luke was okay I guess, and the plot suspense was interesting. Then the errors started....

Even though Luke has a big dark secret about her brother, they start kissing and having relations instantly. Really? The group brings a helicopter for back up leaving it in Worcester, MA for a dangerous job in Boston saying they want it close- except Worcester and Boston are about an hour apart from each other. Close? Huh? At one point Summer mentions that she didn't connect the bad guy's last name to a kid she knew when she was younger, except he used an alias when he worked for her, so how could she? There's also Luke's boss- Mac- who's been desperately looking for his ex-wife and finds out years later that there might be evil reasons for her disappearance and is worried and determined to find her, but he never once mentions his girls! What?! Then there's the evil bad guy's father who suddenly has a very angry daughter at the end, but who's never mentioned once in the whole book until then. Surprise! And because the two of them change locations at the end- all the sub-characters we got to know are left in NY and there's new characters that you would've had to read the previous series to know. Ooops! The end.
That's all folks! I'm done.

Just my opinion but- as much as I care about handicapped people, and want the best quality of life for them, how can these severely handicapped people- missing arms and legs, in wheelchairs, with horrible burned and tortured facial scars, and with terrible addictions and PTSD- be able to do private security safely? As much as I wish they could- there's certain jobs they just can't do and/or clients wouldn't feel comfortable with. Maybe that's why the author moved Summer and Luke to a new area and back to a regular office? H-m-m-m?

This book opens with a literal BOOM! A bomb has gone off in the testing area of Daniels Aerospace. Summer Daniels had been up in the office watching when an alarm went off, she was racing down the stairs when she collides with a former employee Steven Galbraith, just before the blast. In the aftermath she is almost run down by a van driven by that man. She's a witness, she knows what he's done. Now with the death of their chief engineer and the discovery the rare element needed for the testing is gone the demise of her father's company was an almost certainty.

Fearing for her safety she recalls the article her father pointed out to her. A security company HERO Force run by former Navy SEALs is now operating in NY. Her brother Edward was a SEAL, one who didn't survive. Perhaps they could provide both her father and herself with the protection they need and also help them find the stolen element.

Luke 'Wiseman' Arroyo was in the process of quitting his job with HERO Force. His boss Mac was trying to talk him out of leaving when he's interrupted by the intercomm announcing a Summer Daniels to see him. Luke immediately recognized the name, Edward 'Buckeye' Daniels' sister, his pen-pal for a while. No way was he leaving now, he had to know what brought her to them.

Even with all the things that need to be solved, there is no denying the chemistry between these two. However Luke is going to have to come to terms with a lot of emotional baggage.

Summer is more than determined to break through Luke's walls not knowing what will be revealed.

I loved this book so much, the dog, Zeke, the memories and the simmer to sizzle romance is perfect.

Summer Daniels is an engineer and a chemist at Daniels Aerospace, a family owned business, where she struggles with a new material which would keep the family business afloat if successful. However, soon things go horribly wrong and Summer is sure that her efforts are being sabotaged. But why are they being sabotaged and what’s the secret behind it? Summer’s father insists on personal protection and they hire a newly formed company who employs ex SEALS. Summer isn’t enthusiastic about the proposal. Her late brother was also a SEAL and Summer hasn’t yet come to terms with this loss. She’a afraid that only recently closed wounds would be reopened by just being around SEALS. However, she knows that she’s in desperate need of protection and agrees. Imagine her surprise when she finds out that these ex SEAL members were fighting with her late brother. Hoping to find finally some answers regarding what really happened to her brother overseas she’s more than surprised when she hits a wall of silence. Even more so when she finds out that’s her old penpal will be her protection detail.

A nice and steadily written book that offered some twists and turns. I have to admit that I didn’t read the book in one go. Maybe that’s why the general atmosphere of the book didn’t impact me at all. Or was there just no ambience? I also missed the character development which would have intrigued me more. This was definitely a nice and carefree read but I expected more, much more. I would have expected this book to take off at a certain point and pull me into its storyline - but it didn’t…… what a pity!

Another huge hit for Amy Gamet. This HERO Force, Shattered SEAL's novel brings back some incredible, damaged SEAL's and characters we've seen in previous HERO Force books.

Still emotionally shattered after his last tour in Afghanistan took the life of his best friend and team member, Luke Arroyo finds himself battling with the decision to stay with his newly formed NY based HERO team or hide away on his property to try and come to terms with the things he did while there. But when he's faced with protecting his best friends sister there is no question, he does what needs to be done and hopes for the best.

Summer Daniels, an extremely intelligent engineer and chemist, works along side her father at Daniel's Aerospace on the edge of a huge break through. When an explosion results in the death of an employee, and the nearly impossible-to-get metal they need most goes missing, Summer calls on the group of men she feels can help and protect her best. But when one of those men turns out to be someone from her and her brother's past Summer is pulled between keeping her and her father safe and being near one of the last man that saw her brother alive. But they have a history and Summer is drawn to him.

As feelings immediately develop between Luke and Summer, Luke will struggle with the images and secrets he battles with from the war and the need to protect his fledgling relationship with Summer. Once the truth comes out will they stand a chance at a future? And what casualties will they suffer when the threat on Summer's life turns deadly?

I am new to this author and I tried her because I saw an ad for the book on Facebook, read the blurb, and noticed it was free. I also liked the fact that this was the first in the series.

This book was a page-turner from the beginning. It started with a bang and ended with a big change for the characters, throw in a wonderful German Shepard and well I loved it.

Summer and "Wiseman" have a connection. Her brother asked her to write to the SEAL because he had no one else. They developed a bond through email and then after her brother died, he dropped her like a stone. He was persona nonegrata until she needs a HERO or 5 to help protect her as someone is out to destroy her family's company.

The characters are intents and each member of HERO is a wounded former SEALS who are given a purpose again. Summer and Wiseman have been attracted to each other from the beginning but Wisman has a secret that wants to find the light of day even though perhaps it should stay buried. Ms. Gamet takes the characters and the readers through emotional twists and turns and even a few tears as Wiseman struggles to forgive himself and allow him to believe that he is worthy of Summer's love. I wasn't sure for a minute or two that they would get their HEA but they did. The story and characters pulled me in and held me hostage and now I want to find out more about Wiseman's co-workers and their stories.

Scientist Summer Daniels has already lost so much. Her brother, a Navy SEAL, died while serving overseas. Now her company is under attack. Someone has set off a bomb to destroy the research she and her Father are conducting. Her only option seems to be to turn to the men of HERO Force to help protect her and her Father, while trying to get to the bottom of the attack. What she didn’t expect to find was her brother’s old friend, and her old pen pal, Luke “Wiseman” Arroyo.
Luke has long held onto a secret about the death of his friend…a secret that will shatter the relationship he shares with Summer. His only option is to stay as far away from her as possible. But he can’t protect her from afar, and she insists on being front and center when they try and take down the man behind the bombing.
The new group of men who belong to HERO Force will tug at your heartstrings, because they are all wounded warriors. Each man has suffered a loss, and each man is trying to find a way to fit back into the world around him. This first story in the spin off series is filled with explosive chemistry between Summer and Luke. As well as a boat load of secrets that will alter the outcome or the story.
Read. Enjoy. Sigh. And, just maybe, shed a tear, as these new hero’s find the women who complete them.

With her life's work blowing up in front of her, Summer Daniels has more than a destroyed laboratory to worry about. The realisation that the plant was sabotaged and that her life is under threat, makes her turn to the HERO Force to help her find the missing element required to replicate her work and the man responsible for the attack. Coming face to face with the SEAL she knows as Wiseman, Summer chooses him as her bodyguard, given that he was not only her brother's best friend but that she had corresponded with him for years whilst doing her studies. Luke would rather not have to face Summer given his past, but he is also unwilling to allow anyone else to keep her safe. As the race speeds up to finding the missing brancium and to stop the actions of a madman, the attraction between Summer and Luke escalates, but first Luke has to get over the hurdle of telling Summer the truth about her brother and the resulting fall-out. This military-style novel is well written, fast-paced and exciting. Although romantic, it is also has a dramatic plot that kept me reading almost as fast as I could turn the pages. This novel is part of a series, and whilst the way is opened to the next book, it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to good conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

PROTECTING HIS WITNESS is a Novella that is action-packed from beginning to end. Summer Daniels is a rocket scientist who works with her father at his company Daniels Aerospace. An ex-employee has set a bomb off and sabotaged their place of business. Also seems set on killing her father & Summer. Father & daughter have decided to hire the Hero Force. Made up of retired Navy Seals. They need protection and the return of their stolen property.

Retired Navy Seal Luke Arroyo was assigned to guard Summer. He was no stranger to her. He had been a friend to her dead Navy Seal brother. Also they had been modern day pen-pals, until her brother Edward's death, and all communication stopped from Luke's side. Now she needed him to help find Steven Galbraith or what ever name he was using. To get the brancium back, while keeping her safe. Also, she found out Luke had a retired military dog named Zeke. He was her brother's dog before he was killed. Summer fell in love with the dog, maybe more than her love for Luke. They were each very broken people, each a piece of a whole, and only together could they truly be complete again. Of course, this wouldn't be easily accomplished. The story was easy to read and I look forward to reading more of the series. Fast-paced!

Scientist Summer Daniels was Luke 'Wiseman' Arroyo’s penpal at her brother’s request but they stopped after an explosion in A-stan, killed her brother and Wiseman lost his leg but can’t give her details. Summer’s mom died months later, her dad is failing fast and an explosion at their lab last night killed her godfather. Her dad was excited to read a HERO force office opening nearby and insisted she call. As Luke tells Mac he’s quitting, Summer arrives at the office to hire them. Only Mac and Luke know Summer’s relationship to the team as they’re all introduced, she remembers ‘Wiseman’ immediately.

Summer explains the explosion was designed to cover the theft of an expensive, rare element by, fired employee, Steven Walsh, who and Summer locked eyes as he tried to kill her during his escape. The team takes on Summer’s issues of protecting her and her dad plus retrieving the element, she insists on Luke for her guard. They’re both hella interested, after they’re in a compromising position then the deed, he pulls back, not wanting to share his secret. Meanwhile, the team learns Steve and Summer’s dads were once partners. This reader wasn’t a fan of the characters, the story moves with an intriguing enough plot.

Disappointed unfortunately

The premise was so good and I really wanted to love this book, because I love s needy heroine. It just never lived up to its potential. I actually liked Luke better Than I did Summer (as evidenced by the fact that I just had to go look up her name to write this) she was a typical smart but stupid h that constantly forges ahead into circumstances that the H then has to rescue her from. At least she admitted that much in the book. The plot devices were fairly predictable but all of these things could have been overlooked for me but when I say this was a slow burn, I mean sloooooooowwwww. They didn't get together til around 80% of the book and then it was woops he's gone, then they're back, nope j/k she's gone now. Utterly frustrating. I will probably read the next book just because I know that the first in a new series can be like the pilot for a new show, and it gets better from there. I'm also curious enough about Mac's story to keep going for now.

Readers are expected to suspend their disbelief - and that one of the reasons reading fiction is so enjoyable - but with this book, you have to suspend it really, really high. The team of Shattered SEALs all have serious physical impairments and yet go about their tasks seemingly without challenges.

Some of the scenes are disjointed and there were a number of clichés. However, there is this bit of conversation that made me laugh heartily for about a minute. The last man in the team - and I'm imagining these burly types - is about to jump a fence.

"You going to do a plié?" asked Moto.
"A plié is a squat, asshole. I was thinking more of a running leap with a full rotation and a curtsey at the end."

Well, that's about all I remember about the book. But for some reason, I'm curious to know about the other guys on the team so I may continue with the series.

This is book one in the Shattered SEALs series and it features Luke and Summer. This is a fantastic story line! These two share a past, even though they’ve never met in person, which is why I understood their instant connection. The truth of Edward's death would have been hard for anyone to deal with. These SEALs are broken on the inside and some on the outside as well.

This is a captivating read and a fantastic first in the series. There was a plot twist in the end that was so unexpected. I felt it should have been made a bigger deal than it was at that point but it wasn’t. Regardless, I still LOVED this book and I look forward to more stories about these amazing men from this talented author.

This was an enjoyable read even though some of it required a suspension of reality.
I liked Luke and the team of Navy SEALS. It would be wonderful if there was actually a company that exist where these brave men's useful skills were put to work.
The plot was good, sometimes funny, sometimes unbelievable. No one heals as fast as Luke did! Especially to do some of the things he does in the story. There are lots of twist and turns in the plot, some were a surprise and I wondered how we got there.
Summer's reaction to Luke's revealing story was unrealistic. It showed a lack of understanding of relationships and the pressure men face in war. But it added more pages to the story, right?
Even with its flaws it was a decent read. Give it a try.

Edge of your seat ride,

Luke was Edwards best friend on the team, Luke wore the burden and b!am himself for Edward 'Buckeye's' death. Summer Daniel's a scientist working with her father at their company. She is also Edwards sister and her father plant has just been blown up by a disgruntled employee. There is so much to this story. The employee stole a very special alloy that they were manufacturing for space flight but it could also be made to make very powerful bombs. Can Luke and the team find it before something terrible happens? WhY will happen to Luke and Summer 's growing relationship once see bears how her brother died? This is a story worth the reading.

Fair

Summer is a scientist and works for her father’s company. One night she’s getting ready to head home, when an explosion occurs. She sees a former employee running away he tries to kill her. Luke is a former SEAL and works for HERO Force. He served with Summer’s brother, who was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan. Summer goes to HERO Force to help her find the person responsible for blowing up their building and protecting her. Luke is keeping secrets from Summer but when he reveals them, will he lose her?
Pretty good story but the ending was like it was rushed and the author was just trying to end it. Action and steamy sex.

Interesting story line

So, this is my first with this author and while it was a pretty good story there were some strange pieces. Like, why choose a metal that is so rare to try and get into the aerospace business? And how did her father get captured initially- wasn't he being protected and by whom? And how do you blow up several floors in a missile silo meant to send out missiles and withstand direct hits? Just a few, but important, challenges in the plot line. Not decided on whether I will keep going with the series.

Lots of action with great characters! Luke and Summer were both great characters with great chemistry. I love that the seals in this story all had problems that they were dealing with. Secondary characters were also likeable and I especially liked Zeke who was a retired canine was also involved in this story. Enjoyed plot and the little twist that kept appearing. Can't wait for the next book! I am voluntarily reviewing an arc I received.

An amazing story in the Hero Force series.

Luke is full of guilt from his last mission before leaving the Seals. He is recruited by Mac to join the Hero Force Group where he is tasked with protecting Summer who is being targeted by Walsh who wants her formula.

This is a interesting and well written story full of plenty of action with lots of twists and turns. There is amazing chemistry between Luke and Summer which is good to read.

I really enjoyed this book

Timeline off

While it was a Good book i have a pet peeve about timelines the hero had his leg crushed and told it would be a long time until he could walk and it was like 2weeks plus t
He was at the finale action scene and there were no walking issues again these authors need to do the research and get a medical consultant i am a nurse so I know the limitations it takes away from the story
