About the author
Paul Halter
85 books61 followersPaul Halter is a writer of crime fiction known for his locked room mysteries. Halter pursued technical studies in his youth before joining the French Marines in the hope of seeing the world. Disappointed with the lack of travel, he left the military and, for a while, sold life insurance while augmenting his income playing the guitar in the local dance orchestra. He gave up life insurance for a job in the state-owned telecommunications company, where he works in what is presently known as France Télécom. Halter has been compared with the late John Dickson Carr, generally considered the 20th century master of the locked room genre. Throughout his nearly thirty novels his genre has been almost entirely impossible crimes, and as a critic has said "Although strongly influenced by Carr and Christie, his style is his own and he can stand comparison with anyone for the originality of his plots and puzzles and his atmospheric writing."
His first published novel, La Quatrieme Porte ("The Fourth Door")was published in 1988 and won the Prix de Cognac, given for detective literature. The following year, his novel Le Brouillard Rouge (Red Mist) won "one of the highest accolades in French mystery literature", the Prix du Roman d'Aventures. He has now published more than thirty novels. Several of his short stories have been translated into English; by June 2010 six will have appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine; ten were collected and published by Wildside Press as The Night of the Wolf.

Paul Halter is the current master of Locked Room Mysteries. No other living person can equal him in this genre. John Pugmire of Locked Room International does us a great service by translating his books from French to English. This book contains ten short LRM stories. Most are very ingenious. The stories also vary in plot and background. One of the stories has some similarity to “The Sittaford Mystery” by Agatha Christie. During a seance the spirits reveal that someone will be killed. Halter however takes a different route than Christie. The spirits not only reveal that one of the people at the seance is the killer, but everything also ends with a sealed room murder. Halter’s genius simply knows no bounds. That is why he is currently my favorite author. I only hope that John Pugmire will translate Halter’s remaining books before I die.

FIRST READING 2/11/20: 5 Stars
For my money, the previous collection of Halter’s translated stories, The Night of the Wolf, has stronger stuff but this was enjoyable too.

"The helm of Hades" è la seconda raccolta di racconti del maestro del giallo impossibile, Paul Halter, pubblicata da LRI.
Sono sempre felice vedendo un Halter nuovo sui miei scaffali, ancor di più se le "short stories" in esso contenute paiono rifarsi alla mitologia classica. Purtroppo, nonostante abbia amato l'Halter novelliere in "The night of the wolf", quest'ultima raccolta delude un po' le aspettative: nonostante le magistrali atmosfere soprannaturali che ancora una volta l'autore mostra di saper creare anche con poche pennellate, le soluzioni degli enigmi sono un po' deboli e trovate "ex abrupto", come per intuizione divina.

THE GONG OF THE DOOM: 3 STELLE
Non è altro che la riproposizione di uno dei mini-casi contenuti nel romanzo "Meurtre au manoir Tudor" ( tradotto in italiano in "Il gioco del delitto"). Soluzione carina ma non particolarmente entusiasmante per chi di solito legge un certo tipo di gialli.
JACOB'S LADDER: 5 STELLE
Uno dei migliori della raccolta. Lo avevo già letto nell'antologia, sempre della LRI, "The realm of the impossible". Un bel delitto impossibile legato all'episodio biblico di Giacobbe , con una soluzione geniale ma semplice.
THE MAN WITH THE FACE OF CLAY: 2 STELLE
Le premesse erano buone: uno stimato archeologo, inseguito dalla solita maledizione a seguito dei suoi scavi empi, riceve la visita di un essere che pare avere la faccia d'argilla. Il mattino dopo viene trovato nel suo studio chiuso dall'interno, morto per un colpo di pistola, senza che su essa ci sia alcuna impronta. La soluzione è una delle più odiose da trovare in un poliziesco e tanto ricorda un famoso racconto della Christie.
THE SCARECROW'S REVENGE: 5 STELLE
Senza dubbio il migliore della raccolta. È la storia di un marito che giura vendetta alla propria consorte, perseguitandola anche da morto: pare infatti che il suo spirito, incarnatosi nello spaventapasseri da lui costruito in passato, abbia ucciso il padre della fanciulla, in uno spiazzo fangoso in cui le sole impronte sono quelle della vittima. Sarà Twist a spiegare l'arcano. La meccanica ed il movente sono davvero fantastici.
THE FIRES OF HELL:2 STELLE
Altro racconto ripreso da "Il gioco del delitto". Non mi piaceva lì e neanche isolato mi fa impazzire. Metodo, colpevole e movente sono davvero puerili e avvilenti.
THE WOLF OF FENRIR: 5 STELLE
Ultimo dei racconti migliori della raccolta. Delitto impossibile su un manto di neve vergine che pare compiuto da un noto lupo della zona. Dinamica e colpevole sono molto ingegnosi.
NAUSICAA'S BALL: 4 STELLE
Storia legata alla leggenda di Nausicaa e Ulisse. Un uomo muore con accanto una palla (che ricorda quella con cui giocava la fanciulla nel mito) su una discesa ripida verso il mare. L'unico che sembra aver potuto commettere il delitto sembra l'amante della moglie, ma...
THE ROBBER'S GRAVE: 3 STELLE
Storia originale di una zona di terra su cui non cresce l'erba da secoli a seguito di una promessa fatta da un condannato a morte. Sarà Twist a spiegare in parte il come. Storia lasciata un po' aperta e con una soluzione un po' forzata.
THE YELLOW BOOK: 2 STELLE
Qui c'è un po' di tutto: delitto in camera chiusa circondato da una distesa di neve immacolata, una seduta spiritica che annuncia il suo omicidio, il furto di un pugnale polinesiano e sospettati con un alibi di ferro. Tante cose:già forse troppe, perché la soluzione è altamente implausibile, a giudicare anche dall'esame medico. Ricorda vagamente un racconto di Carr.

Storia interessante di un uomo reso invisibile dal famoso "elmo di Ade", che uccide impunemente più persone. Meccanica un po' troppo semplice ma coerente.

A hit and miss collection of short stories from the leading light of impossible crime/locked room mysteries.Newcomers to Halter are advised to check out his earlier short story collection Night of the wolf,which feature stronger tales.So as with all collections of this sort they usually are a mixed bag but fans of the genre will find things to enjoy here.👍

Cuentos cortos, todos ellos de excelente composición. Protagonizados por el Dr. Twist y Owen Burns retoman los mejores relatos de Paul Halter.
