They say you only get one chance to make a good first impression, especially when it comes to making first contact with an advanced race of aliens.
When Dr. Ayers uses the DNA of a long dead alien lifeform known as the Sansein, the Last Reaper finds himself caught up in an unprecedented situation.
The Sansein, as it turns out, were not as extinct as Ayers originally believed.
Possibly benevolent, definitely dangerous—these aliens are bound to react poorly to what has been done with their fallen kin. The life of a Reaper is never simple. The exodus fleet has old enemies that can’t be avoided for much longer.
But those same enemies have a secret as well…and It just might save them all.
Chaney and Moon have crafted one of the greatest sagas of galactic-scale science fiction. I’m totally hooked! This is getting more sinister and darker with each installment! A tittering new Alliance, a deadly enemy, betrayals..the overall story is that much richer. It’s an amazing feat that I was constantly awed by. The pages are damp with grief for what is lost and can never be recovered. But there are moments of unexpected emotive moments of real human interaction, infused with hope. It has been a tense, edge of seat read all the way, from beginning till end. A wonderful co authors accomplishment, magnificently reflected in the stories. Needless to say, I highly recommend this series! Eager to read Descent of The Reaper#8!
I enjoyed this addition to the Reaper series. I began reading this as a filler between other military science fiction series but it now one of my go to series. This has became one of my favorites.
We finally have a name for the alien race that the Slayer hybrids are derived from - Sansein. They kidnap Ayers who has fled with some players and are outraged by the 'abominations' and condemn humanity to die. Cain manages to rescue Ayers and kill a few Sansein by boarding their ship - which causes another outrage. Meanwhile the Alon want to talk and broker an agreement - but is it a trap? The stakes are raised the fighting becomes more intense and everything is on the line - including Briggs....
Once again, I'm not too sure what to make of this book.
There are moments in which the characters behave in a rationale way under the circumstances. Cain's interaction with the armada captains, talking to them with respect not because of title alone, but because what they are willing to do to protect their people. Or when Cain, will risk himself to come to the rescue of a friend, or a ship in need.
Then they're moments in which the author goes, you know what will be "cool", Cain completely forgetting who he is, where he is, what his up against, and just mouth off to aliens if far more superior technology because he's a "reaper". Yeah, let's macho talk are through a tense situation, and put the lives of everyone he claims to care about, to include his AI helpers, in danger. WTF.
Of, and we're back to Cain and other using foul language, because he a "reaper" and "reapers" need to curse to sound bad ass, otherwise, how else would you know I mean business. Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but the books in which both F**K and S**T are used frequently, are also the books I like the least. These foul mouth books also happen to be filled with a whole lot of filler content; little character/plot development, a whole lot of actions that leads to nothing.
I put this book and the series at around 2.25 stars.
I have found the series frustrating, yet here I am on book seven. The plot pace through the series has been wildly inconsistent. On and on about mundane items, only to role through a major battle in a few pages. Build up to a confrontation and then poof it is gone. I could go on. But the characters are interesting enough that I keep hanging in there. So, I am not sure if I have just adapted or the writing is getting better, but I enjoyed the read. Four stars.
As usual, a good fast actioned book. I confess to sometimes feeling that Cain is just a bit too good to be true. He really doesn’t need to be exhausted every time he’s in a fight to the death. I love Elise who has battled such tremendous odds for her age. Still a good way to pass the time. Suitable for all ages and lovers of SF.
The battle continues . Alliances are broken. Battlefield are drawn. A new threat now exists for control of the known and unknown parts of the galaxy. Politicians in their infinite wisdom agree to an alliance to deal with a new threat with a sworn enemy only to be betrayed. Non stop action. An excellent read. Enjoyed immensely!
Reaper and the crew of Jelly our involved in war between, Sastein, Alon and their own group.
First they get in trouble with the Sastien because they land on their ship to steal the scientist Ayers back. Then the group they have been spacing with make a stupid deal with the Alon and then there's a war.
The reaper is still surviving despite the universes best efforts.
Another great addition to the series and I'm glad that there is still more to read. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure.I think adding his long lost sister into the mix, will stir the pot. Can't wait to read the next one 😀
This one had a lot of really fun action. I liked how the battles focused on the main characters while progressing the story with all the background action too. Fun fights, interesting characters, and it is in space. What else do you need? Not much. I recommend it and the series.
Chaney and Moon have delivered maybe the best book in the first 7 books of (The Last Reaper series). It's nonstop action from the first chapter through the last chapter Cain doesn't complain as often as he has in previous books and the book is paced really really well the book is a squirm read and totally entertaining! Time to move on.
An action packed romp from beginning to end. Cain and his crew can't seem to catch a break as their enemies, alien and human, close in. I can't wait to see what adventures this new planet brings.
I am back in my childhood waiting for the next Saturday episode to play at the local theater. Almost too much action as we wind our way toward the next story. But the hook has been set. All my favorite characters are on one ship.
Outstanding, just when you expect a left your hit with a right cross.
The Reaper books are quietly taking over as my favorites from these authors. Probably switch back when next Renegade book releases, but no matter which one you Pick up you’ll not be disappointed.
I continue to look forward to reading this series. Old as well as new challenges are smoothly incorporated into the storyline keeping it fresh and interesting. Chaney and his coauthors produce exceptional stories. Keep the books coming!
I enjoyed the first books, now it's getting to be much going on.. The Reaper can do no wrong, while being a total idiot. This series should have ended with the last book.
Of I've neglected saying this in the past. I humbly apologize, J.N.Chaney is a master writer and Scott Moon is definitely no slacker! I anxiously await more of the Reaper universe
Halek Cain is still frustrated with Elise yet has to admit that she’s becoming very skilled with her abilities in both combat and flying her micro fighter. They wind up needing all of her skills against multiple & very different opponents.
Having discovered this series by reading the Renegade Series, I'm enthralled with Reaper Cain, Elise, Path, X-37, and all the rest of the Jellybird crew! Hard to put it down!
This book was very good . They have a huge space battle where Briggs shows up as an enemy but ends up helping reaper Cain and his team and now they are looking for a super weapon that can wipe out the alien race. Kept me turning pages into the early morning hours.
Setting aside that the MC is still child like and a bully, not making any growth in 7 books, the fact that his _gut_ makes the bestest decisions every time, no matter how stupid they are is beyond my ability to suspend disbelief anymore. DNF.
The story continues on, perhaps not as strong as some but better than some others. If you’ve got this far with the series you shouldn’t miss this one..
Well this was a blast, reading trough this felt amazing, i especially enjoyed the fact that Briggs didnt die and joined the fight with our friendly reaper as the awkward scary bodyguard
Good action sci-first but a little short. The characters are consistent and I.like adding Briggs back into the story as a slayer. I only hope he stays part of the team. Ready for the next book!
Good sci-fi, excellent humor and Snark, fast-paced read.
I like this book a lot I like the character of the last reaper and his immediate associates. Plenty of action humor and good pacing makes the story very interesting.
