A suicidal mission. An impossible hunt for the enemy. A company of elite soldiers willing to risk it all. Captain Aravon has accepted one final challenge: cross an entire continent to kill Tyr Farbjodr, the commander of the Eirdkilrs.
His mission leads through enemy territory, across the towering Sawtooth Mountains, and into the harsh tundra of the icy Wasteland in search of his target.
Hunted by savage foes, with only his small band of soldiers for support, it’s a race against time to put an end to the Eirdkilrs’ leader before he unleashes a devastating new attack that would destroy everything he’s fought and bled to protect.
With everything on the line, can Aravon and his Silent Champions withstand the full might of their cunning enemy to save their kingdom one last time..even if they have to sacrifice their lives to succeed?
I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.
Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!
This series is like a dirty dozen/ guns of navarone type military themed fantasy. I liked Shields in Shadow so much that I ended up binge reading the entire quadrilogy. There are shades of Richard Sharp in the main character when it comes to the relentless fighting and moving from one dire situation to the another. The series has a satisfying ending too which is rare in this kind of fiction. The one criticism I have is its immense length - I feel that half of the books could have been cut away to keep the series nice and tight.
This one pulled at my heart strings. I cried a lot through this book but so much more in the final battle against Tyr. I’m still reeling from it. The non stop action and epic battles were amazing! I couldn’t have lived these characters more. They were all perfect and the chemistry between them? Brilliant. 5 stars.

The 4th book in this epic military saga has left me breathless, as I travelled with Aravon and his heroic band, the Grim Reavers on yet another terrifying battle. This could very well be their last as the venture was so risky it was just suicidal, however our dauntless heroes venture into a terrain where no other Princelander had ventured before. They cross the Sawtooth mountains in freezing temperatures, fighting foes they never dreamt of crossing paths with except in their worst nightmares, in search of the worst nightmare of all, Tyr Farbjodr, the Eirdkilr who planned on taking down the Princelands after his attack on Icespire failed. The giant was fearless and according to Captain Lingram he could not be killed. our eight soldiers had to survive the crossing of the mountains, navigate the icy wastelands and kill Tyr Farbjodr and they had to do this in the few days they had left and they were running out of time. A daring venture with great world building of the treacherous mountain ranges and the wastelands, with such amazing descriptions of the ice and cold I felt I was freezing whilst reading and an amazing cast of heroic characters which have the readers routing for them till the last line. There are very sad parts to this novel but what sticks out the most is the fearlessness and heroism of our group of friends who would rather give up their own lives than see another of their group do so or the venture to fail. I love the way the author manages to tie up so well all the loose ends of the story in the end, giving us an ending really worth waiting for! For all readers who love military, sword and sorcery, gritty and grimdark epic fantasy with no holds barred this is the series you just have to read!
This is a book filled with immense courage, and huge amounts of sacrifice.
It's filled with huge adversaries who stand head and shoulders above normal men. It is filled with truly savage and brutal enemies in huge numbers, being led by a giant of a man. Tyr Fardjod. He is the leader of these giant sized men and he seeks to destroy everything our valiant heros hold dear.
The characters in this book are quite honestly some of the best I have ever read about. They are fully fleshed out, with insecurities and flaws, but those are the things that make them all the more relateable.
They are a band of brothers (and a sister) who do not back down from trouble. In fact they sometimes cause it themselves! With different skills and very different personalities, they fight like an army, even though, technicaly, they aren't one.
They fight for there people, for their land and they fight to keep an incredibly evil man, from overthrowing all of Einan, and decamating their world.
I loved this story. It was exciting, engrossing, and pulse quickening stuff. If you are looking for a passive, gentle story about flowers and butterflies; then this is NOT the book for you! What you get from this book is, action, action and more blood filled action.
And then, right at the end, you get an interesting twist. Things are not always what they seem!
Even though I reached the end of this book, I really wasn't ready to let go of it!
What a finish! This is another fabulous book. As the Grim Reavers continue to try and stop the Eirdkilrs they are on another epic quest. Although the middle of the book does not contain as many battles as usual it does not lack for action. I’m lousy at reviews but I found this a great book and highly recommend the whole series. I am just about to start the companion novellas, I’m sure they will be as good as the rest
Courage to Sacrifice is what can only be called a spectacular conclusion to a fantastic series. With the 'immediate threat' to Icespear quelled, Aravon and his band of exceptional misfits find themselves thrown into what might possibly be their most dangerous mission yet. And considering the long odds this team have managed to come through before, that is really saying something. Instead of fighting heated battles in their own lands, now they are journeying across the frozen hellscape of the Wasteland in order to take the fight directly to the leader of the Eirdkilrs, Tyr Farbjodr.
By this point in the series, you kind of know what you're getting into; a whole lot of action, seemingly hopeless battles, desperate chances, clever solutions and grievous injuries. But because of the change in setting, the battles felt very different and never felt repetitive. There is no chance of re-inforcements throughout the journey, Aravon and his team are completely on their own. So the way they have to approach these challenges has to differ, which keeps the battles fresh and interesting.
But the real draw to this series has always been the characters and the relationships built between them. Courage to Sacrifice doesn't let us down on that front. The characters we've grown to love throughout the previous novels are of course back in full force, with all their brilliance and flaws. On top of that, we see a return of the small group of Deadheads we saw in Ragged Heroes - if you haven't read that novella before picking this up, I really recommend doing so -who complement our known and loved group wonderfully.
This is one of those books that made me laugh, made me cry, had my heart in my mouth and tugged at my heart-strings. Despite the length of the novel, it is tightly plotted with fierce action scenes yet wonderful characters and descriptions so the frozen ice wasteland comes to life around you. The group of characters are tested in more ways than one; their battle prowess is not in doubt, but as the origins of the Eirdkilrs is further explored for example, the small team have to re-evaluate some of the things they have never had to question before.
All in all, this is a fantastic conclusion to a very strong quadrilogy (is that a word?!). It's powerful, action filled, tightly written and continues to show case a fantastic group of characters who I've really grown to love. I still have the prequel to read (The Last March), but I'm really glad that I finally got around to finishing this series.
As the saga of Aravon and the grim reavers continues the story takes up in the capital of the princeland The bloody costly battle against the Eirdkilrs. now follow the Grin Reavers and the mission to cross the sawtooth mountains to hunt down Tyr Farbjodr, and this tale the reader find out a bit more about the team members why the Duke chose them and the burning question why the are killers want to goldstone so badly and the people that of all races to To mine it to mine it
The story of captain lingran "the blacksword" the dragon skin curse or cure and saving a life. the half demon of Voramis and the real story of Tyr Farbjodr and the legend reborn a gunnarsdottir the shield maiden, t the elixir of creation and the ice saffron is finally found the cost of killing Tyr Farbjodrs and friendship at all cost, even love.
The freed minors and even the Eirdkilrs are in awe of the Gunnarsdottir...by the Keepers hairy arse is the war over had gunnarsdottir done it? now did the Dukes dream have a chance to become a reality ? this is a must read to those who are following the tale of Captain Snarl and the Grin Reavers. Warfare, epic battles, tragedy, love and loss a tale only Andy Peloquin could write with all the dark fantasy military style and give the readers an inside view of the soldiers, the people and in the land in which they live and love and endure the cruelty of survival. The story of Aravon and his Grim Reavers takes on a whole new adventure.
Keeper's Teeth! I'm a total wreck. Honestly, I can't recall when I last cried so much reading a book. Ugly crying the last 20 or so chapters... I'm just glad my dog was the only being seeing me like this.
Here are two of the quotes that made me weep. The readers who have read the book, will know what I'm talking about.
"You ARE a Grim Reaver"
"It's faith and action that makes a thing holy"
Last time I got so invested in a story and the characters was when I first read Of War and Ruin (Book 3 in The Bound and the Broken series by Ryan Cahill). Here it was similar... in the first der books you get to know the characters. You start to feel for them and with them - then all hell breaks loose and suddenly you forget that they are not real.
Belthar, the gentle giant, had me cry happy tears with his Goodie Day. Zaharis, the Secret Keeper, will always have a special place in my heart for what he did in this book and the ones before. The Seiomenn, Stonekeeper, is one of my favorite healers I've ever read about. Skathi, the archer, is what I call a strong female character and I'm glad I got to read about her and the way she evolved so much in this motley crew. Noll, the scout, who loves his family and has amazingly funny lines and can hold his liquor. Colborn, the half-Fehlan Lieutenant, one of the best second in command characters I ever read about. And my newest book boyfriend, Captain Aravon and his little Enfield Snarl.
This is another stellar book by Andy Peloquin! We join Aravon and the Grim Reavers on what may be their final quest - to find and kill Tyr Farbjodr the vicious leader of the Eirdkilrs. They undertake a dangerous journey across frozen mountains and wastelands. This book is full of action and bloody battles as our heroes make their journey. The title is accurate as the characters all have such courage and are willing to sacrifice everything including their lives to save the Princelands. This book is such a treat to read, I was fully immersed in the story and I felt like I was in the world with them! (Not always a good thing as I hate being cold lol). But seriously, Andy Peloquin is a master of character development and world building! I love all the characters so much, they are like my friends! This story is full of the unexpected and at some points is so emotional it made me cry. I highly recommend this masterpiece of a series to any lovers of epic fantasy, grimdark, and military fantasy, but really I think everyone should read it!
I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I received this as an ARC and highly recommend the minute its released! Andy has done it again and continues to amaze me! I thought my chest might explode. Andy takes you on an epic well executed strategic military adventure and sets you up for a monumental climax with blood, gore, excitement and fear. The company of Grim Reavers you've come to know and love through personal struggles and triumphs are a cohesive group of dedicated, resourceful elite who work as one well oiled machine will not disappoint. As I read with vehemence and unwavering wariness I was pulled into their fight, their agony, their exhaustion, i shared all their emotions. Andy's still the master storyteller I've come to know since I've begun this journey of the Grim Reavers from their start at Camp Marshall in Shield of Shadows.
“Shields strong and swords sharp,” Aravon had written. “The Grim Reavers march to one last battle."
The Silent Champions series ends on a roaring high note: 1) Just like Shields in Shadow, Courage is an incredibly focused book 2) World descriptions are on point, with the depictions of the frozen desolate wasteland being excellent 3) Twists and turns that I genuinely didn't see coming 4) Possibly, a perfect ending
Overall a very good series - an excellent 1st book, good to great 2nd & 3rd, Brilliant 4th entry.
“Battle plan’s the same as usual, Captain?” A hint of wry humor echoed in his quiet words. “Hit the fuckers until they stop coming, yeah?”
Courage to Sacrifice certainly lives up to its title. The Grim Reavers and the Ragged Heroes go all out to end the Eirdkilr threat once and for all. Some make the ultimate sacrifice to see that the mission succeeds, even little Snarl nearly loses his life protecting his "pack". The action is heavy and hard hitting as should be expected from Andy Peloquin. Readers will keep turning the pages to see how the heroes we've come to know and love fight through to the bitter end and succeed despite heavy losses. I don't wish to give anything away but I will say there is a satisfactory end to Aravon's story.
Grim Reavers: A group of individuals who will fight to save people they know and don't know. They use their individual strengths to work together to try to beat the odds. The character growth within the four books is great to see. We get to respect and love them even more for who they are and what they believe in. The intensity was over whelming, It was beyond exciting. In the face of all the hardships and impossible odds they just keep going no matter what the circumstance. It's a story that I wish would not end. An excellent story.
I thought this series could not get any more exciting. I was wrong. So very wrong. I was on the edge of my seat throughout this wonderful book, and stayed up into the small hours to finish it, a thing I almost never do. It also made me cry at one point, another thing I never do when reading.
As well as great action, the various character threads are all brought to a beautiful emotional conclusion, and one has almost the feeling of the massed choir at the end of the Messiah. It is a grand book, sweeping in its scope, and meticulous in its every detail.
Reading this book has been like a crazy, dramatic and intense race mixed with a rollercoaster marathon... in other words, I'm still in the process of recovering from the shock that this latest adventure from our beloved and very heroic Grim Reavers has left me. A proper ending to a very consistent series, albeit with some unexpected twists, ideal to keep the reader in suspense. Excellent characters, magnificent settings and an enveloping plot that together make the reader unable to stop reading. To the author, Andy Peloquin, thanks for another unmatched series and for keeping Snarl safe!
That was awesome. The entire series from start to finish hit on every level, for me. First of all, I love me a bloody battle, and this was war from start to finish. That moment when the shield wall breaks, and it turns into a melee reeking of blood and bowels... goosebumps. If there's not a guy with a warhammer hacking and hacking and hacking, I don't think you're even trying. Throw in a ragtag group of broken and jaded soldiers brought together to accomplish the impossible, and I'm foaming at the mouth. This book had all of that, plus a little magic. It was perfection.
A shocking conclusion to a heart wrenching epic tale! This author truly held me captive with gut wrenching, action packed scenes, dangers at every turn and shocking twists and turns. I can even talk about these characters without describing something best left for the reader! The best review I can give this series...is the fact that all four paperbacks are now wrapped as a Christmas present. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
An amazing ending to the great series, a right mix of emotion and action. A good ending absolutely deserved for the surviving heroes. The deaths were done with utmost care and justice a lot of them made me tear up particularly the death of Zaharis and the brothers. This is going to be part of my all time favorite series

Wow. Andy Peloquin delivers an extraordinary book and this one is just excellent. You just can’t stop reading it or sleep. It’s an magnificent adventure. Andy has magical powers in his writings. I read almost all his books and they’re amazing. Great job. I received a copy and voluntary leaving a review
Book 4 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The overall plot and characters have developed well and are exciting. There is a lot of filler information throughout the book that could have been taken out. It is repetitive in some of the telling. The characters overcome a lot of obstacles and the plot was well done.
What an epic ending to an absolutely amazing series, the Silent Champions has it all, from the bloodiest battles to great camaderi between fellow soldiers, from start to finish this nail biting series has you on the edge of your seat, Andy Peloquin may the Sword Man bless your amazing story telling....😁
Loved this series, thrilling from start to finish.
An outstanding military action series. If you like the belgariad and the classic dragonlance series you will love this author's work. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. I look forward to more from this world.😀
This wraps up the story from the two previous books. The underlying theme of the books is about what it means to be a soldier. Excellent example of the Brotherhood of soldiers who fight for each other. Well done !
Of all the stories that Peloquin has written this is the best as it captures the proper spirit and determination of what sacrifice is and how a team can do the impossible. Really well written and tidied up
This has been one of the best series of books I’ve read. Throughout the first four books of the series you really get to know who the heroes really are. This book is full of surprises and an epic ending.
The Silent Champions have become one of my favorite series.
It is the very memorable and relatable characters that carry these books. The storyline and action sequences are secondary to these very real characters. I never want to see them go away.
I read all series in completion. This was another interesting and well written book. I so enjoy the way he writes with wonderful detail. You can picture what he's explaining no problem.
Oh my gosh!! Wow. What did I just finish reading?!?! I have been sitting for 3 days trying to figure out what to write about Courage to Sacrifice so that everyone will pick up this series. If you have been following along there could not have been a better ending for this action packed heart felt series. Aravon and the Grim Reavers are headed south into the frozen wasteland of their world to stop Tyr Farbjodr, commander of the Eirdkilrs. The hardship they encounter is more grueling and harrowing like anything before. You listen to Aravon ruminate his past, questioning the decision to go on this death mission and what they are up against. Mr. Peloquin has once again detailed the pain and suffering of his characters and the story of their losses and has successfully torn my heart out for everyone on this mission. In some way I think of the movie the Revenant and what Dicaprio went through in the cold. When it came to the last two chapters I was gutted with loss but a sliver of light had shown through at the end. And I will leave it at that, don't want to spoil anything for you. My favorite book yet!!! OMG. One that leaves you saying WTF? Dang that was Good!
Well, possibly the last in the series or is it? It’s certainly the best so far. If you have read the other three you will know what I mean what you finish this one, and finish it you must. Trust me you will not regret it. I certainly didn’t. I just hope it’s not the last one. Very highly recommended must read.
