Published at the end of the 1970s, this volume of poetry is definitely a product of its time. Writing about love, relationships and male-female encounters in general, Pfennig tries to include female perspectives and question male behaviors. In retrospective, some of it still feels dated or at least very heavy handed (men also can be vulnerable, did you know that?), but he had good intentions and I want to honor that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't make the poems any better. Pfennig is aiming for a sort of end-1970s cool tone, which feels rather off. Some poems feel rather unfocused, others lack condensation and feel more like talking, with the occasional Rupi Kaur crime (cutting up a sentence and calling it a poem) sprinkled in. There are also some strange aesthetic choices in this volume: Some lyrics have a chorus-like part that is repeated several time throuout the poem, but the editor decided to print it only once and then just print the first line for every repetition.

The book was a bestseller back in the day and kicked off a career as a poet that continues until today. Even though I didn't like the poetry too much I liked it as an interesting historical curiosity.
