This is a well written creeper with an interesting plot. Bit of a cliffhanger, hope there's a follow up to continue, or finish the story. Not gruesome, but more of a psychological scare. Always enjoy a Bullock book!
The October People by ML Bullock is a spin-off of the author's "Gulf Coast Paranormal" series. This story follows team member Jocelyn Graves as she embarks on a solo mission to investigate the infamous Leaf Academy. It also reaches back in time to tell the story of Hugh McCandlish, one of the tragic victims of the academy.
Jocelyn is excited to be invited to investigate the Leaf Academy and document any paranormal activity she encounters. Expecting the usual opening doors, cold spots, and mysterious noises, Jocelyn is shocked to experience eerie music from the auditorium, disembodied voices, strange black feathers, and the spirit of a young boy. Is the ghost another unfortunate victim, or a dark entity masquerading as a child? If Jocelyn is very lucky, she won't find out the hard way...like Hugh McCandlish did.
This was downright creepy. It was not a cozy paranormal mystery by any means. Perfect for October/Halloween. I'm almost sorry I read it in September. Hah! The author deftly ratcheted the tension up, in both the past and the present, making it difficult to stop reading. I admired Jocelyn's moxie, as well as Hugh's determination to do the right thing. Characterizations were brilliant, including Jocelyn's rescue dog, Sherman.
Spooky, compelling, and highly-recommended! Five stars.
I have read every book in the Gulf Coast Paranormal series and I think this one was the creepiest one yet! I really wasn't sure what the ending might be, but the ending was great and leaves me hoping there might be another story revolving around Leaf Academy.
I love the southern setting because I grew up in the North East. As usual, the book was too short so I downloaded the next book. Bullock is a prolific writer and I enjoy her books. How could it be more incredible, a real life Medium writing ghostly books.
Wow! I am a believer after reading this book. I am not a medium nor can I see ghosts or anything like that. I couldn't help but imagine what I was reading and yes, I was definitely scared. I love watching scary movies and reading scary books. It is a good thing cause I could hardly catch my breath. Great fun!!
I enjoyed this book - not as much as the regular Gulf Coast Paranormal books but it was a good book. It definitely needed more characters though. A little predictable in some aspects though. I knew something was off from the beginning.
This book is the best so far in this series. The books are a lot better without the cheesy dialog that doesn't even feel real. Wish more following the main character here would come out but I doubt that's going to happen.
I love this author! She weaves well written stories with a little history and some ghosts. Leaf Academy is very creepy and as Jocelyn investigates, the story unravels we find out just how evil the place really is.
Intense ,creepy rollercoaster ride. Did Jocelyn get in over her head,is she to bull headed to listen to Midas. The ghost in this story are like ones you never met.
