What happens when the one thing you can't have is all you've ever wanted?
Declan is the perfect omega, as far as Klaus is concerned. He's a big teddy bear who's a little rough around the edges and cares for everyone in the pack like a surrogate father, and Klaus has loved him from the moment he sought refuge in Wildcrest.
Unfortunately for Klaus, Declan has always belonged to Jason, the former pack alpha. In life, Jason was a tyrant who treated his mate as carelessly as the rest of his pack, and in death, the ghost of him still lingers.
Losing himself in meaningless flings just isn't enough to keep Klaus' longing for the older omega at bay anymore. He can't keep running from the truth, or the secret he buried long ago that could destroy everything--including the friendship between him and the only omega he's ever loved.
Shattered Wolf is the second book in the Wildcrest Pack series. This is a standalone Mpreg romance with a May-December friends-to-lovers pairing, a loving pack of close-knit shifters, and a guaranteed HEA.
*3.75 Stars* OH I LOVE an older omega with a younger alpha. BUT. There is a lot of self-flagellation and denial by the older omega, Declan. Too much for my personal taste. Jeez. Poor Klaus is practically bending over backwards trying to show his affection. He's demonstrative and after some teeth pulling even communicative. But, Declan is like a brick wall of denial. He can't see his own worth. 20+ year in a loveless relationship and mated to a cruel Alpha has left him scarred. How can he believe this young, charming, irresistible Alpha could find him worthwhile, and has for a very long time. Idiot Declan. That wolf had ME frustrated.
Still a really good shifter series. I'm just not a fan of the relationship conflict device. It's one that grates me. Alas, I look forward to reading the next book when it comes out.
3.75 stars I like the world that the author has created, but there is a spark missing for me which, in other works of the author, caused me pain when I would leave a chapter in between to do a chore. I guess I’ll just keep holding on until I get one such a book, like I know the author is famous for.
I was so happy to know that Declan and Klaus would be the pair for the second book of this series - they were definitely the couple I wanted to read about most!
Declan is an omega who was mated to the previous pack alpha, who treated him horribly. That combined with a poor body image left Declan with very low self-esteem and poor image of himself. Klaus, the sweet alpha who has secretly loved Declan from afar and who truly knows what they are to the other, must decide if he can risk their friendship to become more.
I gotta say, as much as I loved these two when they were together, they both frustrated me to no end! I know that Declan has been through a lot and been mentally and emotionally hurt, but he just had constant self-doubt about worrying that Klaus would eventually feel like he got saddled with a bad, old, useless omega. And then Klaus - knowing what he knew about the two of them as a pair - should have talked to Declan MUCH sooner than he did. If these two just talked to each other, a lot of the angst could have been avoided.
However, the moments they were together were steamy, sweet, and caring. I love them while they were together in the other pack making a little life together. There was some push-pull, one step forward two steps back, moments between the two of them before they started getting on the same path. Overall, with strong writing, great chemistry between the two, this is a story I very much enjoyed.
I really look forward to the next story in this series! While I think you could read this one on its own, I still highly recommend reading the first book since you'll get a better idea of the packs, the other characters, and get to meet this pair in the first book.
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately, a big disappointment after the first book which was simply amazing. Here we have Declan (omega) and Klaus (alpha), who we met in the previous book. It's interesting in that Declan is 15 years older than Klaus, and a bit 'bulky and muscled, as opposed to the usual waifish omega.
However, the whole story revolves around a huge misunderstanding that after some point didn't make any sense; the excuses that Klaus especially gave for not speaking openly to Declan (Declan was a stubborn a** himself and way too oblivious IMHO) were beyond ridiculous and the sex-withdrawal-angst rinse-and repeat-cycle became tiresome and aggravating after the first couple of times. Besides there was no real story involving the packs at all; this couple lived in an isolated bubble just the two of them, almost for the entirety of the book.
There are also a lot of errors concerning names of secondary characters from the first book; they're spelled differently or are completely changed in this one :(
I did not enjoy this one after the first half at all I'm afraid, but I'm interested in the other wolves of Wildcrest pack and plan on reading their books anyway.
After reading Captive Wolf, the first book in the Wildcrest Pack series, I was already charmed by Declan and Klaus, the older omega taking care of the whole pack and the kind, younger alpha.
So you can only imagine how excited I was about their book. It only made me fall harder for them, although, admittedly, most of the book I just wanted to smack them, make them get over their hangups. I mean, the author did an excellent job at describing their feelings, their fears and insecurities, and I understood they had to go through an emotional process before they were ready to completely, wholeheartedly give themselves to one another. Yet,understanding all that didn't stop me,at times, from wishing they just talked and stopped from suffering unnecessarily. I cheered so much when they eventually, finally worked things out.
Declan and Klaus are amazing, caring and giving. They've been through too much already in their lives, and it was high time for a turnabout of their destiny: unexpected, wonderful gifts from the fates, and finally the happiness they deserve.
𝗦𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗳 is a great addition to the series and now I can't wait to see what happens next.
It was kind of anticlimactic.... Mainly because they didn't talk to each other, *sigh*
I think I was expecting a lot more than I thought and maybe the book felt a bit meh due to that. I just ended up feeling exasperated with Klaus and Declan, even though I could understand where the hesitation came from, really, they dragged it too much for my taste.
so sweet and interesting. cute story and i wish it had been a bit more angsty haha.. but overall it was really good and i enjoyed it a lot. i cant wait for the next one. this series is so much fun to read.
This was incredibly absurd. I liked the first book but this was bullshit. Drama for the drama without reason. I can buy some things but this book is like a slap in the face.
I can't understand Declan attitude. He is an asshole. And so is Klaus. They are in love with each other but Declan don't want to be with Klaus because????????? There is no a single reason in the entire book why he and Klaus can't be together. NONE. You know what, don't read this shit. Because is incredibly unsatisfying.
I'm upset. I'm angry. I feel ripped off. What a waste of time this was.
I mean, I liked the concept of the story, however, I grew really bored with the lying. To each other, to themselves, to the people around them I mean good lord, grow a pair.
Also, there was a continuity issues with a couple of characters mentioned in the first book and this one. As in - you totally used the wrong names for them. This was just ok, I honestly liked the MM stuff under Abernathy better than these books.
Blurb = (Why do I include this? Because I don't think a book should be docked stars for being what it says it will be. Meaning, if I don't like stories about werewolves and I choose to read one, I shouldn't give it 2 stars JUST because I don't like those kinds of stories. Unless... it wasn't clear the type of story I would be reading.)
Gave the reader a good idea of the type of story.
My Genre Scale = 5 stars. Love shifters and fantasy plus May-September romances. Ambivalent about omegas.
Odds if not your genre = Not the one I would suggest.
What stood out = Should have been a slam drink read for me. Sweet plot idea with a ton of potential that was never lived up to in the end.
Warnings = Not for those who loath a lot of relational and/or mental back and forth - especially about coming clean or being forthcoming. This is not a sensitive area for me and it pushed past my limits. If done well and developed I often like the push pull.
Series Notes = 2nd of what appears to be 5 eventually. Each can be read as a stand alone. I do not know if I will continue to read this series. As the 3rd is not out, I do not have to worry about it, but I definitely won't be actively seeking its rekease.
Rating Notes = I thought for sure this was going to be a 4 start book.i loved it for awhile. Then questionable unclear timelines kept throwing me out ( 1 example being in comparison to the pregancy length in the 1st book.) I read them back to back. Other issues are hard to cite without spoilers except for one example. Klaus is reflecting back on his life mentions his mom. The next sentence said her illness continued to get worse. What illness? There was no mention of her being sick, until the sentence setting she got worse. This type of thing happened more than once. Then due to the constant back and forth etc.. I eventually could never really settle back into the story well. It dragged. Then rushed forward. Then dragged. It felt like some of it was contrived to extend the book. Once the biggest secret was revealed it felt anti-climatic, not well developed, and left me confused by Declans response somewhat, after all the other drama. Then there was the whole undercover operation that was totally underdeveloped from the reason, to the how, to any forthought on how they were going to explain it to the pack at a later date etc... When example after example kept coming to mind of issues, I just couldn't round up to 3 Stars. It had even more issues than the first.
Factors: Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. . I read at least 100+ books a year - at an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much, much, higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2020) was a 3.72 average for 1390 books.
This is the second book in The Wildcrest Pack series. While I have been anxiously awaiting Declan and Klaus' story, and I honestly enjoyed the story, I think I liked the first book, Captive Wolf, better. They are completely different stories, but something held me back from this one a bit.
Klaus came to the Wildcrest Pack when his pack basically disintegrated. He was young, and Declan was the Pack Alpha's mate. Klaus was young and foolish, and in a drunken state, he learned a life altering fact that he has kept hidden since that day; one that wasn't just his to keep.
Declan is the pack's mother hen/wolf? He is not only dealing with the guilt of not grieving his mate's passing, but he still can't come to terms with his inappropriate feelings for Klaus. But when the unexpected happens during a surprise not-birthday trip, he knows he must not trap the young man.
When Gabriel presents an opportunity for a field assignment for an omega, Declan jumps at the chance to get away for a time. What he was not prepared for was young Klaus volunteering to go as his undercover mate.
While checking out a new pack, the two men are living in close quarters. With the assignment going well, their proximity wears on both of them, and life takes on a different cadence. But, when deception is uncovered, the walls go back up, and the angst level rises once again.
Klaus makes an unexpected decision, but he feels it is his only choice. Not long after, Declan learns that he suffered years of abuse for something that wasn't about him at all. But, he is stubborn, and refuses to accept the idea that he is not a burden. When Klaus instinctively knows he is needed, he heads directly to the Wildcrest Pack, and just in time.
This story is full of love, but also the fear of what it means. Secrets have consequences, and the self-inflicted doubts could have been avoided by just telling one secret when, or soon after, Jason was killed. I think that's why I got so irritated with the story at times. It would be so easy to fix everything!
But, overall, the storyline was entertaining. It was great seeing the characters from the first book back again and where they are in their lives. And, although I complained about the "secret," it was imperative to the storyline of this book, so just expect some angst and a certain level of righteous frustration with the characters. Lol.
Happy reading!
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review . *
While everyone is covering the lying and drama, I'm gonna go ahead and vent MY biggest pet peeve which is TIME. K? They get in the car at bum fuck am, and yeah I'm sure a lot of time has passed, because Declan slept for half of it, but when the car breaks down, Klaus was supposed to have stopped at a motel, thought they could power through the night, had been making great time. How far were they from the pack? 4 hours. Now, maybe the pack is spread out. So maybe there were hours before they left the pack. But the only time I have to go buy is "four hours" and its late cause Klaus thought he could drive through the night...and they started at bum fuck am. How...is it already evening? (And that's before taking into account how long it would take to walk 10 miles).
K, then the next day, he goes to talk to the mechanic, who opens at 9. Now it doesn't specify what time he went, but if were ME, I'd have gone to visit the guy in the morning when he opened. So he walks there, talks to the guy, who says he can't get to it until "later today", walks back, with snacks for Declan, makes a call to Gabriel, takes a shower and comes out to ask if Declan wants to "go anywhere", Declan replies.... "it's almost time for bed". Um. IN WHAT DIMENSION? The lazy writer dimension!? And then BOOM, they roll over and fall asleep........ That's it. No diner. Not even questioning if there was one. He didn't eat at all, Declan only ate that junk and paced the floor "all day" (for what ever a "day" is worth).
NO. That's absurd, lazy writing. What was even the point of them getting stuck there if you're just gonna use that plot device to end the day as soon as possible so you can move on? There wasn't anything meaningful or any point. Or if there IS a point, that makes it worse, because then it would be so blatant this happened to trigger a future event and ONLY trigger a future event (i.e. is the mechanic gonna plant a bomb? is the pack they're going to gonna be pissed at them for being late? that kind of thing). (And I honestly dont know whats worse, if this was used as a plot device for a future event, or if it made absolutely no difference and thus was a COMPLETE waste of our time and the characters). If you're gonna write them stuck together in a one bed motel room, then MILK it. Don't just absurdly end the day (although to be fair, the day before was absurd too so its not just a lack of utilizing plot. It's literally lazy writing).
I liked this book though not as much as the Jakes storyline because of the inconsistency in the two books. ***Spoilers**** the first book was great fast paced and full of tension and love, and this one was well full of love I guess. In the first book they made a thing out of omegas pregnancy being only 5 months and slot shorter then humans and in this one Declan s pregnancy was something like 7-8 months long yet premature...then the Hunter from the first book who almost killed Umber said his daughters name was Jessica and she was the only han in the pack and mates to Alex only in this one there is a human named Sara who's father was a Hunter and her mate was Ben and Alex is never once mentioned...so is there 1 or 2 humans and if two why the same back story is it just a mistake or bad editing. Then in the very beginning he said he imprinted on Declan at 20 but then at then end he says he was 18....so other then some inconsistency the book is good. Lots of love even if there are a large number of misunderstandings. Then there's also the somewhat overlooked fact that Declan was mentioned multiple times both in the first book and the second book as having been mentally emotionally and possibly even physically abused by his former alpha Jason, yet no one ever takes into account the fact that maybe he's emotionally abused and not quite ready to accept love. I think that this caused some unnecessary drama even though in the end it all worked out.
This is the second book in the Wildcrest Pack series. I would strongly recommend reading the first before you dive into this one. Both characters are introduced in the previous book and events from the previous book are discussed.
Declan isn’t your average omega, he’s taller and huskier. He has pretty bad self esteem issues due largely in part to his late mate who always tore him down. Klaus is a younger alpha who has been in love with Declan since he was a teenager. His devotion and the love he showers on Declan is super sweet.
The reason this book is getting 4 stars instead of 5 is for a couple reasons. First, in this book, there is quite a bit of lying and omitting of information. It almost became too much, with Declan pushing Klaus away and Klaus keeping things from him. It really isn’t the type of angst that I enjoy in a book (just a personal preference for me). Also, this book lacked the usual intense action scenes I’ve come to really enjoy from this author. There is one very short fight scene that doesn’t lead to much. I was waiting for more conflict with another pack or maybe some important discovery about another pack.
Overall, it was a sweet book especially after Declan and Klaus finally get over themselves and truly get together. I’m definitely looking forward to where the Wildcrest Pack leads us next.
Rating: 3 stars I was really looking forward to this book. I loved Klaus and Delcan in the first book and was looking forward to their story. Unfortunately, the actions of both of them drove me crazy throughout the whole story. I really couldn’t understand either of their reasonings but Declan in particular bothered me. His thought processes just didn’t make sense to me and the book devolved into what I hate the most: friends to lovers who don’t communicate with each other. Klaus literally tells Declan at one point that he loves him, and it still isn’t enough for him. I just couldn’t understand it. I also couldn’t understand why Klaus waited so long to tell Declan his big secret. It would have paved the way for their romance so much sooner. Just way too much waffling and angsty feelings for no reason for me to truly enjoy this book fully. I do hope that the author continues the series because I want to read Gabriel and Ashton’s story. Hopefully, it will be better than this one turned out to be.
Terrific May-December friends to lovers with shifters, a bit of angst and fated mates. This story really illuminates the value and necessity of communication. Declan has such a poor self image after his first alpha treated him horrifically, one could so feel for him and want him to heal. Klaus so valued his friendship with Declan that he was afraid of losing this precious person in his life, however i would have really liked him to have explained their relationship much earlier. Both MC's are wonderful characters and were well developed. I liked the story-line and the pacing was really good.
Declan and Klaus are amazing together and their chemistry sizzles. I loved watching them finally find each other as mates and lovers. These guys are fun, sweet, with a bit of angst and a whole lot of special.
This is the second book in the Wilddcrest Pack series and i cannot wait for the next book. . I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my review.
Pretty low angst, quite a bit of the same of Declan's insecurities being fleshed out repeatedly, which I get that it's part of his tormented past and feeling like his best years are behind him. I just wish there was more to the story and his character arc than his woe-is-me persona. I get that the whole trip to the other pack was for them to get closer or whatever but a) I can't believe I'm saying this, but it would've been a nice addition if there was an actual point to their spying and b) NOTHING was resolved during their stay!!! It didn't add anything to the story for me and was a big fat disappointment, especially after book 1 with the epic fight. I would absolutely love to read Ashton and Gabriel's story. Their relationship already seems pretty established so I'm curious as to how the author will spin their story
Such a nice story! It’s really easy to empathize with Declan and how he feels that he’s unworthy of basic happiness, and he really held onto those feelings. Klaus had a huge secret, and usually secrets just irritate me. But I actually agreed with Klaus’ reasons. I just absolutely fell in love with Klaus. His dedication and love for Declan really knew no bounds. Such a tender man. Declan had gone through hell with Jason, and he has survived some brutal things. Seeing him slowly heal was amazing. Seeing him happy even more so. It was lovely seeing our friends from book one, and it makes me curious about who is next. A certain hellhound perhaps?
I’m rounding up. Shattered Wolf wasn’t as good as it could have (and should have!) been. I feel like this story could have been told in half the pages max. if the protagonists had just bothered to sit down and have a talk.
As for Gabriel and Ashton, it is beyond obvious that these two are together. I’m guessing L.C. Davis is saving this for their book. However, why not just put the readers out of their misery and just have them mate already? This thing is dragging on way too long and is frankly not that interesting.
Well, one thing we will find in abundance in this book is tension! Declan and Klaus surely didn’t make it easy for themselves but this is exactly what makes the book so interesting. Compared to book 1, this one does not include the focus on larger picture of pack poitics in the extent I loved in Captive Wolf. Despite that however, the book is a great story of a difficult relationship with deep insight into the emotions of both MCs. I really liked it and it’s a great addition to the series I hope we will see more of.
This is the 2nd book in The Wildcrest Pack series. We get to see more of Declan and all the secrets that he is hiding. What he went through to protect all the members of his pack from the Alpha. What is Declan to do when feelings that he thought long buried to start to surface and they are circling on way younger Alpha. Klaus has had a crush on the Alpha mate, and can he bring it to light now or not? Can’t wait to read more in the series hopefully we get to see more of Gabriel and his one. Highly Recommend this series if you love to read about shifters BRVL --Book Review Virginia Lee
Wow! I really loved this book! To be honest, I haven’t read anything bad from LC Davis. This book was such an emotional ride. I really wanted to reach into the book and smack both Declan and Klaus upside their heads! They totally belonged together. It took them a while to get there. I really felt for Declan in the first book. I’m glad to read his story. I can’t wait for the next book! Highly recommend!!
🌟 SHATTERED WOLF was a great second book for this series. This story featuring Declan and Klaus tugged at my heart as they struggled to find and accept that their happily ever afters were really possible with each other. ❤️ 🌟I’m ready for Book 3!(Hopefully, it will be available soon!) Will it feature Gabriel and Ashton? or Umber? (I’m looking forward to reading both stories.😄)
I cheered for Klaus all the way through :). The book was quite good when it came to the feels. But that was pretty much it, I kinda wanted a little bit more "upset"/sadness over the whole issue (this could have really been very heartbreaking story, but it wasn't done in such a way...well only a little bit). There were no unexpected plot twists that you wouldn't think of. It pretty much delivered what I expected. Nothing more.
I was finally old and wise enough to realize that it wasn’t just the relationship and companionship I envied. It meant nothing if it wasn’t with him. Nothing if it wasn’t for him. My heart had been made for him from the very beginning, from long before we had even met.
It is so frustrating when 2 people are in love with each other but still try to protect the other because « it’s better for them » when they are both miserable.
TW: Domestic violence, negative body image, diet culture
I wanted to love this one a lot more than I did. While it’s a good story and I was invested in Declan’s HEA after everything he’d been through, I couldn’t get on board with the secrecy, self-sabotage, and miscommunication. These guys are literally everything to each other from the very beginning, even if they don’t acknowledge it. I couldn’t understand why it was so hard for them to get out of their own way.
L.C. David's Shattered Wolf is the second book in the Wilddcrest Pack series. It is a m/m. romance with shifters, an mpreg, Fated Mates and a May-December romance. The story is sweet and fun, a little bit of angst and secrets, lots of steam and chemistry and fantastic characters. Declan and Klaus are amazing and I loved their story.
One of the few good books where they won't talk to one another
Usually when a book is based on a reluctance to.communicate, it can be a slog to get through. Not this one. Klaus' reluctance is understandable, even sympathetic most of the time. Very believable without becoming annoying. Declan's issues work in a similar way. A good second book. Looking forward to the next.
Tender and sweet Shifter romance. There’s bed sharing and unexpected heats, some low level drama that tear the couple apart before they come back together with a surprise baby. The Omega MC is an insecure, chubby cutie who was mistreated by his former and now dead Alpha. The new Alpha love interest is younger, extremely enthusiastic and utterly head over heels. A quick sappy read. :)
