What a wild ride! If you're interested in history and conspiracies, this Valiant series is the one for you. Here we're introduced to the dynamic duo of Archer and Armstrong, an odd couple if there ever was one. Armstrong is one of three immortal brothers from ancient Mesopotamia, who now gets drunk and quotes poetry, and Obadiah Archer is a bright-eyed and naive assassin raised in seclusion in a religious cult compound hidden in a creationist amusement park and trained all his life to hunt and kill the Antichrist: He Who Must Not Be Named.........but his name is Armstrong. He realizes that Armstrong isn't quite the Antichrist, he's just a lazy, lovable galoot, and the two hit the road on adventures fighting a variety of interconnected secret societies bent on world domination! Not to mention ninja nuns and telepathic Nazi monks!

There are some laugh out loud moments in this one, especially in the banter between the two leads. And be warned, the plot goes by at such a breakneck pace, it can be hard to keep up, so you gotta hold on for the ride and pay close attention. I love all the clever hints as to how the series will connect to the larger Valiant universe (lots of foresight there guys!).

What really put this book over the top was the wacky-as-fuck third volume, "Far, Faraway." The first two arcs were cool and all but this one takes the cake. I wasn't prepared for the utter insanity; so crazy I couldn't help but love it. Our boys end up stuck in another dimension where every unexplained disappearance or conspiracy go to die. It's a really clever history mashup where a war is brewing involving Martians, dodo birds, dinosaurs, Roanoke settlers, and even Ambrose Pierce! The way everything connects here is tons of fun and it's cool bumping into all these Easter eggs.

Check out this charming, witty series that somehow manages to pack so much in its pages. You might even get some history lessons as well!

Wow!

There's sooo much going in this story. Almost too much.

This has a brilliant origin story to Armstrong and his brothers and I love how it all fits into the Valiant universe.

The only downside is that they are introducing new characters like new lottery tickets. Fucking loads of them. It doesn't saturate the story, but it does saturate the action.

I'm gonna need time to take this all in. Fabulous ideas though.

This is one of those books that I thoroughly enjoyed and genuinely made me chuckle to myself at times. I actually enjoyed it so much that I have difficulty putting an actual review into words! Definitely my favorite thing I've read from the rebooted Valiant Universe thus far. In the context of Valiant, it fits perfectly, giving the reader little tidbits into how the story impacts the universe, while being so thoroughly self-contained and story driven that you certainly don't have to read any other Valiant comic to enjoy yourself. If you're into history/conspiracy related superhero comics or are just looking for save-the-world escapism with the synergy of a buddy cop flick, Archer & Armstrong is the book for you.

While my MVP of the creative team is by far Fred Van Lente for his insanely quirky storytelling elements spread throughout the book, I would like to briefly mention the consistency the art team brought to this run. Normally when you read a collected edition of 14 comics where the lead artist switches several times of the course of the book, you may be greeted by jarring changes in stylization or radically different depictions of the same character. However, this book's transitions are practically seamless, which in my opinion attests to both the talent of the artists and the commitment to Valiant's plans for the characters.

Overall, you should read this book. It's literally got something for everyone: A drunken immortal. A naïve disoriented religious assassin. Geomancers with immortal sworn protectors. Secret sects warring for control of the world. Nazi monks. Ambrose Bierce. I will go on, so just save me the time and give the book a try!

Valiant continues to breath fresh air into the world of comics with this interesting self contained story that happily doesn't bleed (at least so far) into the overall Valiant Universe. For readers looking to dip into the new Valiant Universe, this is one of the better places to start.

Archer, raised by a world supremacist cult under the guise of a religious convent, is a bit of a one dimensional character with apparently unknown supernatural abilities. After a lifetime of training and indoctrination, he is set out to assassinate Armstrong, an ancient man from the BC era who accidentally became immortal along with his two brothers after they steal the future artifact known as the boon and activate it . . . committing genocide in the process. Archer, discovering his life was built on lies, feels the only way to know the truth is to stick with Armstrong, who after multiple millennia, has developed the prerogative of, "better to drink and be merry than get involved."

The cluster of information in the previous three sentences makes it clear that this book packs a punch of creativity and great story telling . . . and I didn't even mention the mystical land of dinosaurs, UFO's, rivers of glass and the missing pilots from 1945's Flight 19 over the Bermuda triangle.

Archer & Armstrong is a fun, ridiculous and creative book that I dare anyone not to enjoy.

For those looking for a negative, the character Archer does seem to change his point of view and blindly follow Armstrong too quickly and without much thought (from the writer). But the craziness described above, overshadows this one flaw.

A Rollicking Adventure: “Archer & Armstrong Vol. 1 Deluxe Edition” Review

Valiant Comics delivers a delightful romp with “Archer & Armstrong Vol. 1 Deluxe Edition,” a comic that marries snappy writing with vibrant artwork to create an experience that’s nothing short of a blast. The dynamic between the characters is the heart of this series, offering a chemistry that’s both compelling and hilarious. Each interaction is a testament to the creators’ ability to craft a story that feels like a buddy comedy wrapped in a fantasy epic.
The character arcs are thoughtfully developed, allowing readers to invest in the protagonists’ journey without the weight of taking itself too seriously. It’s this balance of depth and levity that makes the comic stand out. The narrative doesn’t shy away from the absurd, embracing its whimsical nature to the fullest, which is a breath of fresh air in a genre that can often feel bogged down by its own gravitas.
In essence, “Archer & Armstrong” is a fun-filled adventure that knows exactly what it is—a fantastical escapade with heart and humor. It’s a must-read for anyone looking for a comic that entertains and engages without pretense.

Something like 20 years after ARCHER & ARMSTRONG first premiered, Valiant decided to reboot the series with Fred Van Lente at the helm. They couldn't have chosen better, as Van Lente brings his trademark intelligence, imagination, and snarky humor to the series. It's a wild ride through history, conspiracies, and the occasional immortal assassin, but Van Lente keeps things light, even when the fate of the world is at stake, which makes for a fun, brisk read. Filled with compelling characters, a lot of action, and fascinating world-building, ARCHER & ARMSTRONG will keep you cheering, laughing, and gasping, sometimes all on the same page. Highly recommended.

My first deluxe edition read of a Valiant book. The oversized format is great. I think I had only read the first arc previously and for the life of me, I don’t understand why I didn’t read more. The first three arcs since the 2012 reboot are action packed, thought provoking, and humorous all at the same time. There are many hints or Easter eggs regarding the larger Valiant universe from The Vine to Bloodshot’s nanomites. Valiant is a shared universe done right.

Great read...

Archer & Armstrong is the perfect blend of action, adventure, and humor for a recipe of perfection. A little bit of ridiculousness for an unbelievably colorful cast of characters that include aliens, a lost tribe of Native Americans, cults, and immortals. The story flows so quickly that it leaves you shaking your head as to how did you get to the end. Beautifully drawn and colored for a pleasurable read.

Celkem dobré a dost jiné než čistě akční kousky Valiantu. Asi mi úplně nevyhovuje jak moc cool se to snaží za každou cenu být a kolik haluzoidních věci tam přimíchát.

I přes připomínky je to přinejhorším dobré.

Fun!

I didn't think I'd get into this series, nor did I think I'd find these characters amongst my favorite in the Valiant Universe. Turns out I love this series and the characters!

The Michelangelo Code. A good start to the new series. We get lots of nice mythology about Armstrong, and the dynamics between Archer & Armstrong are terrific. The plot is a big MacGuffin hunt, but it's well done and it also nicely sets up future stories. Overall, an intriguing and fun introduction [7+/10].

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior. Not as strong as the initial arc, but it's nice to meet Gilad. Really, the story is mostly his, since it introduces him, his relationship with the Geomancer, and his main enemy. It makes me want to read Gilad's series ... though I'm also looking forward to a stronger focus on Archer & Armstrong in the next arc [7/10].

Far, Far Away. With Valiant's loss of the Turok rights, I never expected to see the Lost Land or its dinosaurs again, but here they are, and that's just the start of this terrific arc. There is so much wackiness that you can't help but love it, plus we get the introduction of Ivar, plus some great relationship between Archer & Armstrong. It's overall at least as strong as the first arc and really speaks well for the continuation of this series. [8/10]

A fantastic book that I can describe as "The Planetary" of Valiant's Universe. I love complex stories that take me into strange worlds and I can spend hours and hours reading , unlike other companies that sell comic books that you can finish in two minutes because they're simple and uninteresting. Valiant Comics, and specially Archer & Armstrong, is not a simple comic book, is a well written story that ties the whole of the Valiant Universe into one beautiful chaos of timelines that you should read!
