He held in his hands the burning Brand of Hell, and in his heart was locked the courage of the Gods! Wise guys and tough mugs, crooks and their thieving mobs knew the Mark of Satan; and they knew the swift ghosts of Fear and Destruction that rode by his side—the many fierce hands of Justice that fought in Satan’s Crew!
By the numbers pulp which is carelessly written at times and not as engaging as most its contemporaries. I didn't really find the central character that interesting either. Not sure if it's a run I'll continue with when The Spider, The Shadow and Doc Savage exist and do it all better.
I should like this more than I do and I'm not sure why.
Captain Satan is a decent character, a mix of gentleman adventurer, pulp hero and a little hint that there's something possibly supernatural going on. His helpers are watered down Doc Savage's crew, but likable enough.
The story is half mystery, half almost Spider level, over the top adventure.
All of these are elements that I like, but something doesn't quite click. It takes itself very seriously, but at the same time has an odd sense of humor.
It's a decent read, a fun time waster, but it's missing something. I might try another one, but feel no urgency to track down the rest.
