She was beautiful. He was my best friend. I loved her, but he took her away from me, so I left and never looked back. I thought I understood brotherhood, but then I joined the Black Sentinels and they showed me what real loyalty was. Not like Dean, my childhood best friend. He and I made a pact about Malia, the beautiful girl who moved in next door, but they betrayed me and cut out my heart, and I vowed I would never forgive either of them. Now she’s here, the girl I loved—the one whose call to my heart was stronger than the call of the ocean, and she needs me and my club to help keep her safe from him. The thing is, betrayal cuts deep and I’m not sure I can be there for her when I fear falling in love with her all over again. But that’s a lie. I never stopped loving her. She ruined all other women for me. Malia Kyler took my heart over a decade ago and never gave it back. Can I let her in for a second time? Or do I risk it all, and take what should’ve been mine all those years ago?
I have loved each one of Victoria's Black Sentinels book, but Malia is most definitely my favourite and that could be down to Wave. Victoria has written a hot, sexy and troubled man who doesn't want his past to affect his future and he certainly has the brooding intensity of a true leading man. Wave and Malia have amazing chemistry and are written with so much sensitivity you can't help but fall in love with both of them and hope they get their happy ever after. As usual with this series there is a good back story leading to a sexy, intense present. Another great book and can't wait for the next in the series.
I just knew I wouldn't be able to put this book down, Victoria Johns has blown me away again!
Teenage best friends, a love triangle with no cheating, a second chance romance and to top it off my favorite MC family, oh my, addictive so bloody addictive. Box's ticked, ticked and ticked
What a gripping read, I just love the progression in this story, teenage close friends and neighbors Dean, Reef and Malia, surfers, lovers of the sea and the freedom of being on the water. Both boys have the hots for Malia when she first moves into the house between them but agree to be just friends, a pact between the two of them Malia isn't aware of but Malia is like a starved girl for affection, she has no father in the picture and her mother is barely at home. Malia and Reef have chemistry and when Malia makes her move on Reef he's the one who backs off, keeps the boy's pact intact, something he later regrets when his best friend makes his move and gets the girl anyway. There's obviously a lot more to this part of the story and I was gripping on for dear life to my kindle wondering how this would all go.
Ten years later Dean and Malia are still together. Malia is a victim of physical and verbal abuse. Choices it's all about Choices, mistakes, broken promises and regrets. Malia needs help and with no-one to turn too she seeks out Reef who is now called Wave and a member of The Sentinels MC. The twists and turns, the hotness, the chemistry and the hope that these two would finally get together putting betrayal and hurt behind them was immense.
I loved it, I can't express how much I love this series. A definite page-turner every time and a no questions asked one-click buy for any MC lover.

Victoria Johns is a new to me author and I chose to read Malia specifically because I want to experience some MC stories. Malia turned out to be an easy read with leading characters who had sizzling and undeniable chemistry, an intriguing storyline, and the hotness of a good boy turned bad@ss biker who will protect his woman at all costs.
In the beginning I questioned whether it was an MC story, but as it turns out, the author was setting the stage for the future, creating the connection that would guide the characters forward. A childhood trio has their unbreakable bond shattered by lies, deceit, and betrayal. Loyalties are tested, and a new path to their futures is born.
As I continued to read, it became clear that the other MC characters had also survived tragic pasts and their stories have already been told. I hadn’t read them and was not left feeling in the dark about anyone. Author Victoria Johns wrote Malia in such a way as to keep the previous characters clearly in the picture as Wave’s new chosen family while she tells the tale of how Malia and Reef become Malia and Wave.
This is a great MC story for a beginner to the genre. It has the element of secret and dangerous criminal activity that I expect to see in an MC. I cringed a bit but it wasn’t too dark and grotesque for my newbie mind. I never felt confused with terminology and felt the strong and loyal connection of the Sentinels brothers. They never give a second thought to what has to be done to keep their family safe. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and absolutely loved the ending. I’m a sucker for romance and beautiful epilogues—Victoria Johns nailed it on both fronts. I would totally recommend this book and this series to any MC lover.
From the moment that Malia moved into the neighborhood with her mother she became immediate friends with two of her neighbors Reef and Dean. Reef and Dean have been friends since they were children and since they are both attracted to Malia an agreement is made that neither will become more than friends with Malia however Reef honored the pact while Dean broke the pact which resulted in devastation for all.
A decade later Malia needs protection from the man she chose and that means going to the man who rejected her for help. Reef is not about to forget the damage that was done but that doesn’t mean he won’t protect her which means facing the past that both have avoided for so long.
Intrigue, heat and so much emotion as two people who have always belonged together get their second chance.
Malia, Dean and Reef were friends until love for her tore the friendship apart. Malia chose to be with Dean and Reef (Wave) left with a broken heart. Now we are at years later, Malia and Wave meet up again. Wave is with the Black Sentinels MC and not as open to giving Malia another chance at his heart. Malia realizes the mistakes she's made and wants another chance with Wave. This is a good story with plenty of background so you won't feel confused by not reading the other two books.
I'm loving the Black Sentinels series and I enjoyed this second chance book about Wave and Malia. Although some parts of the story felt repetitive and rushed I still enjoyed their story
This is the first book I have read by this writer and the first in this series. I was blown away. I absolutely loved this book. It has a great storyline, amazing plot and amazing characters. Hold on because Victoria takes you on quite the ride. I loved it also because it is a second chance romance book which is one of my favorite to read. Reef and Dean were best friends for most of their lives. They lived next door to each other pretty much and their families were each others families. One of their other best friends ended up moving away and that is when Malia becomes a part of their life. She becomes their best friend. But both boys see more with her but both make a promise that she will remain a friend and nothing more. But we all know that is not going to happen. Things happen and the bond is broken between these three Reef ends up moving away and doesnt speak to either one of them for a long time. Malia finds out somethings that are going on with Dean that scare her and she goes to Reef for help. But is he willing to forgive and forget and help her? Will the past become the past and these two will be able to move forward? I absolutely loved Malia. She is a strong character. She goes through so much right from the get go yet keeps going no matter what is put in front of her. She doesnt let anything keep her down. I absolutely love the chemistry between her and Reef. You can easily see it and it is heartbreaking what she does to him in the beginning . But that is what makes this story amazing. I cant wait to read the rest in this series. Victoria has gained a fan of this series and these characters. I want to read more.

Wow, this book seriously takes you on quite a journey! A journey that spans a decade from being high school teens into adulthood. It’s crazy how much the characters changed in that time. And how the loyalty of 3 best friends Reef, Dean and Malia, is shattered and changes their lives forever.
In the beginning there were times when Dean made me cringe and feel like there was something not quite right about him, like him and Malia shouldn’t be together. It’s only years later when, in a sick twist to the story, you get the full extent of how not “quite right” Dean is! My heart really went out to Malia for having to endure the passing years with someone who she thought once loved her but turned out to be a manipulative dickhead. She had no clue what he was really capable of. Even in the early stages of the story I’d be internally screaming at her telling her he’s not the one and that it should be Reef, who chose to walk away instead of fight for her.
Years later they’d find each other again when Malia needs his help and she also walks into the open arms of his biker family, the sentinels. I love their family dynamic and how close, loyal and welcoming they are. It really warms the soul. She finally finds a family who accepts her and loves her as their own which is more than can be said for her own parents.
This was a fantastic read! It was a little slow to begin with but once they fast forward 10 years, the pace really picks up and sucks you in. I have never read any books by Victoria Johns before but I’m dying to read the other books in the Sentinels MC series to find out more about the characters we get to know a little bit about in Malia. If you love love triangles, angst, a sniff of crime and the likes of Sons of Anarchy, then this series is definitely for you!
I'll start out by saying that I didn't read the first two books in the series. However the book is written in a way that I don't feel I was missing out or confused.
There's a very long back story to start this book out. In order to completely understand Malia's and Wave's relationship you really have to go back to where they started 10 years prior, as neighbors in high school. After moving from Hawaii to California with her newly divorced mother, Malia didn't expect to basically be left on her own to fend for herself. That's when the two hot neighbor boys and their families step in and make her one of their own. However Malia quickly finds herself in a love triangle between Dean and Reef (Wave). It's not your typical love triangle though. You see Malia really wants Reef but ends up with Dean. This match ends up sending all three of them down a path that eventually leads in destruction. Destruction that Malia can't find her way out of unless she asks Reef for his help. After all Reef is really all she has left in this world, even if she hasn't seen him in years. The revelations that start revealing themselves once she asks for help is more than she could have ever imagines. Will they all make it out ok or will the destruction just keep getting worse? Read the book to find out!
I enjoyed this book very much and plan to go back and read the first 2 books in the series that I missed.
This is the third book in this series. However, they can be read as standalone books. I haven’t read the first two books and didn’t feel lost or confused at all. This is the first book by Victoria I have read and totally enjoyed it. It took me a bit to get into at first but once I was, I was totally hooked. This book focuses on two best friends and the girl that came between them. Malia choose one friend and hurt the other with that choice. Now its ten years later and Malia is learning that she choose the wrong boy. The only person she can go to now is the boy, now man she hurt all those years ago. Can Reef let go of the hurt and help Malia? Once he sees her again and hears her story will he be able to let her go a second time? I loved this book. It had a great set up with the back story. This book has romance, danger, and so much more. I really felt for Malia. She was going through so much and just wanted someone to want her and pay attention to her and only her. She felt like that was what she got. But in the end, she got so much more and not in a good way. Reef went through a serious change after learning the girl he loved choice their other friend. So much happens in this book. It was a great read. I look forward to reading the first two books in this series and reading more book by Victoria.
I loved this book so much! It hooked me right away with the beach and surfing upbringing Reef, Dean & Malia had. I am a California girl and could totally relate. This story starts out with Reef and Dean, the best of friends, basically brothers. Malia moves onto their block. She's the new surfer girl from Hawaii. The boys instantly love her and they become fast friends. Reef and Dean make a pact that they won't try to date her and ruin the friendship. Well it turns out that Reef is more dedicated to the friendship than Dean and Dean breaks it. Poor Malia is in the middle of this feud that leads to Reef feeling betrayed and out of their lives. The story goes forward in time and Malia finds out Dean isn't the man she thought he was. As she seeks out Reef for help out of the miserable life she has she discovers just how different Dean really is. While Reef wants to push her away, he can't. He never stopped loving her. But right now they need to figure out a way to save her life. This book had me holding on to every word. I fell head over heels for this story. It has everything: romance, friendship, drama, suspense and lots of surprises. This was my first book in this series and I definitely need to go back and read the previous. While this was a standalone I want to know more about the other characters.
I love MC books so when I saw this one I figured I would give it a try. Malia is the first book by Victoria Johns that I have read and I am definitely going to check out the other books in her Black Sentinel series. I liked her writing style, her character development and this storyline! I often don’t read the description of a story just before I read it so then I have no idea what book is about and this story is one of those. I like going in with fresh mind, unbiased opinion and unlimited expectations.
When I first started reading this book, I was wondering where the MC part of this story was but as I continued reading I realized that this book is divided into two connecting halves. The first being when Reef, Dean and Malia were younger and in high school and the second half takes place after Malia leaves Dean. This is when she finds her heart and her true love. But before she can have peace and a future with Reef, they have to deal with Dean and all the ugliness that he brought to her life. Revenge is an ugly word but Reef needed Dean to understand that what he brought upon himself was all his own doing, but can Reef live with the consequences? He also had to find it in his soul to understand that Malia’s peace was more important than anything else and now they both had a chance at the life together they should have had all those years ago.
Malia started out with a bang, though it's a backstory that was 10 years in the past. Normally, I don't always enjoy that per se, but when it comes to Malia, it's needed, as Reef, aka Wave, & Malia's story story started out as a trio of friends, which ended up as a intense love triangle. However, it's not one that I saw coming, as our heroine wants Reef, but ends up with the third, Dean, and it sends all of them on a dark path which ultimately leads to destruction, and no one was left unscathed. It spans over a decade, and bad enough that Malia has to go to Wave for help, though they haven't been face to face in many years. And since he's suffered for years over that one incident when Malia ends up with the wrong guy, so Wave is a bit dark & twisty, and he may or may not been all good with helping her at first, he may or not may be filled with guilt when things are finally revealed. Those things made up the very big, f-bomb worthy twists that had me all kinds of enraged. Those three were friends at one time, then both wanted the girl, the girl chose unwisely, and Reef became Wave as the Black Sentinels MC helped him heal. So, how does it all pan out one may ask?! And this one has an answer, JUST ONE CLICK to find out. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
This was the first book I have read from this author and after meeting her earlier this year I was excited to read a book from hers and she didn't disappoint me with this one.
I will be honest the first part of the book did have me wondering if it was an MC book BUT as the story goes on you can see how vital it is for you understanding the main characters, their dynamics and their history. Reef, Malia and Dean were childhood friends that had their bond, their dynamics smashed by lies and betrayals. I was hooked from beginning to end, seriously who needs sleep really????
I loved Reef, aka Wave, he was the absolute sweetest, so loyal and caring for those in his life. I will be honest Malia, I wasn't a fan of hers to begin with, she did grow on me but in my heart Reef deserved someone better. I struggled to forgive her for her actions. I know im very mean lol.
I really loved the dynamics with the other characters from the MC so I will certainly be going back to read the previous stories and I am excited to see what Victoria brings us next.
ARC received in exchange for an honest review from the Author and Bare Naked Words
This is a second chance romance, stand alone in the “Black Sentinels” series. The third book, I believe. This is Malia’s story.
This book drew me in. I know this is a MC book but there was so much more to it, I will say the MC part was rather short and sudden. But the back story was amazing!! I loved this book so much. I think the only negative criticism I have is there is quite a bit of lingo and sayings that are not used in the States so it made it feel not as authentic. Also, how we just jumped into Wave’s story. Even with those two things this book is wonderful!!
These characters are one of kind and I love them all, and the ones I hated, well I hated them hard! The author brought this story together and made you a part of their lives. I want to be in Cali on the ocean just to be a fly on a board between these guys!
The story starts as teenagers and morphs into so much more. This is definitely a coming to age book, and rarely am I a fan but damn this was good. The book flowed effortlessly and made you want more!! This is a great read!
**I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book**
I've never had the pleasure of reading anything by Victoria before and I am glad that I gave this one a chance. I was confused at first about how it was an MC book but in order to truly get their past Victoria shows us their past and how they've come to where they are in life. I really enjoyed how this book was a book that if you've read the others you get to catch up with previous characters and if you are like me and you haven't read the others you don't feel lost one bit.
My heart shattered for these two and the choices made in their pasts. I can see where both of them came from when they made their choices but my heart broke for both of them. Where their lives lead and how it played out was jaw dropping. Just when you think things couldn't get worse for Malia truths are revealed. Their meeting after so long and the feelings that come back but the hate and heartbreak may be too much to overcome.
This book is one I would for sure recommend. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see what Victoria Johns has in store for us next. I devoured the pages and couldn't put this book down!
Malia is the third book in the Black Sentinels MC series but can be read as a standalone without issue. This was the first book for me by Victoria Johns but seeing as I'm ridiculously addicted to MC novels, I thought I had an idea of what to expect, I was wrong.
Initially I was a tad put off by the length of the backstory because here I was expecting an MC book but was embroiled in a coming of age story...but in the end, it's important to understand how the three people in the story developed their lives and what made Reef into "Wave". This story is heartbreaking, sickening (thanks to a sick and twisted Dean) and redemptive. Johns does a great job of creating characters you care about and want to root for. While it took over half the book to meet them, I fell in love with the men and old ladys of the Sentinels and can't wait to read more. I've already purchased Angel and Gigi's stories to binge.

This tasty second chance story follows Wave (reef) and his childhood friend Malia. We get their backstory which deals with lost love, loss , betrayal and friendship. Fast forward 10 years and we find Wave all grown up and a member of the MC and Malia is in a world of trouble and the only person she runs to is the 1st and only person she knows and trusts to be able to help. We find out some pretty disturbing things along the way and even though Malia burned him all those years ago Wave realises he still loves her and does what he can to keep her safe. I really enjoyed this book its a good addition to this series. Loved how the MC took Malia in as their own right from the very start an I’m looking forward to reading more in the series.
This story pulls at your heartstrings in a good way. In the beginning I was a little put off at the length of the backstory but this author had to do it because depth she writes all of her characters. We need to see the dynamics between Reef, Malia and Dean. Reef and Malia split up and when they are finally starting to find their way back to each other secrets and lies threaten to tear them apart again. The story spans over a decade and parts of their history are dark and twisted. Will they be able to put the past behind them for the sake of their future? Will Malia finally end up with the right friend? I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!!
I loved the connection that Malia and Wave had. I enjoyed watching them grow apart only to be thrown back together by fate. I will say there were some points where I was slightly confused on Malia's personality. One minute, she seems like this strong independent woman who doesn't need any man to tell her how to live her life. Another, she is having trouble being that woman. I understand there are multiple sides to woman, but it was slightly confusing. The book overall was great. I loved the beginning and getting to truly read the backstory. I loved the mental challenges they had to face there towards the end to get past the past and focus on the future.
What another fantastic read by Victoria Johns set in the world of The Black Sentinels MC club. The book starts off with a background on how the main characters meet and how life changes for them both making them the way they are now. Childhood besties Dean Reef and Malia are never separated...until feelings start to change for 2 of them making dynamics start to change. Absolutely loved Reef/Wave from the start of the story.. I wont deny that i wanted to shake Malia a time or two but she just wanted love and attention so who can blame her for choices that she made? Demolished this book in one afternoon and would LOVE more by these MC guys! *Read as part of KU*
Ever have one of those slow burning bites of something spicy that takes its time heating up your tongue and lingering long into the evening? Malia is just like that! At first you aren't sure if its hot enough, but then you dive in for a second bite, a third even, and bam! Heat slammed your taste buds with a blast of flavor you just need more of, now. Malia, Reef, and Dean are that trio of unexpected friendship all mixed up in secret promises, stolen touches, and unforgettable chemistry. What you don't see coming is the betrayal, or heartbreak that only a family of bikers can repair.
This is my first read by the author and im so happy I took a chance on her. This was written very well, the first part of the book did seem kinda long when I was reading it but it really had to be. Once I read the whole thing I realized that without the detail of the first part you would totally miss out.
Reef and Malia are such wonderful characters. Their story is heartbreaking, exciting and dark. I didn’t read the other books in this series but I definitely am going back and doing so. I really loved the way the author told her story. Check it out.
This is the first book of the author I read and absolutely loved !!! The story is the story of Reef Dean and Malia Reef and Dean are good friends Malia moves into the neighborhood and connects with them There is a tug between Rife and obvious but Rife doesn't come close to maintaining friendships Between the three of them
The years pass and Rife goes through a crisis in life
And Malia meet with Reef again Will they make there their love come true?? Worth reading ❤️ I love love that book♥️ ⭐⭐⭐⭐From me
Wow, this series gets better and better. Malia is an amazing read. It’s not always an easy read, but by goodness is worth the emotions. Reef and Dean are childhood besties with their lives planned out. Malia comes into their lives and the 2 boys make a pact that neither of them want to stick to. Fast forward and for the three of them, life has taken a different path. Mali’s introduces you to members of Black Sentinels that I can’t wait to read more about. ( P.S - MAC!!!! Just saying]
This was a good book filled with some pretty powerful messages. I went through so many different emotions when I was reading. I laughed and loved but also got angry and cried. Above all, I felt a strength that comes from deep inside. Victoria did a really good job writing this story, it’s one you should check out and soon.
I’m usually not real big on second chance romance, however this book was great! Johns knocked it out of the park with this book. What do you do when your best friend betrays you over a girl you love? You leave! But what if she shows back up on your doorstep asking for help? Do you help her or save your heart? You’ve gotta read to find out.
Reef/Wave was hurt by his best friend and the girl they both fell for when they were teenagers. Now years later Malia needs Wave because her man his former best friend is abusing her , now can Wave let the past go and help the one who has his heart still?
