Unfinished Business

A killer was loose in Colorado, and evidence specialist Cassie Dumont was determined to prove her expertise to the skeptical local cops. So the arrival of FBI agent Seth Varitek, a man she'd clashed with before, didn't sit well with her competence, her ego...or her libido.

The last time they'd crossed paths, Seth saw just how close Cassie got to a violent criminal. His refusal to confront that fear again convinced him to keep the feisty criminologist at arm's length. Before long, working together became an exercise in torture - especially once the murderer they were tracking made Cassie his next target....

But if you ask her who she is, Jessica will say, "I'm a writer. The rest is all background research."

Cassie Dumont, evidence specialist for the Bear Claw Creek Crime Lab gets her own book in At Close Range. At Close Range brings back Special Agent Seth Varitek as well. We didn't get to see much of him in the first book besides Cassie complaining about him and one time I know for sure.

Cassie is the target this time with the second man of what Seth figures out is actually a three man crew. It picks up three months after Bradford Croft died. The Chief calls Seth, who is already on his way into town for a reason he denies most of the book. Cassie is a no holds bar kind of woman. She doesn't take being pushed to the side sitting down and Seth learns that.

However, they have this burning attraction that comes to explosion a couple of times. Seth swears he's not wanting anything from her, but by the end of the book that has turned around. Cassie states that they are having a three-way conversation most of the time because he keeps bringing up his murdered wife as an excuse.

It takes most of the book for Seth to finally see Cassie as a woman and a cop. He just keeps seeing Robyn, his wife who he couldn't save. He screams at Cassie when they first meet on this case when she goes after a suspect, tries to hold her in her hotel room by not bringing her clothes after she's almost killed. Cassie out smarts him however, which I thought was funny. Holding woman hostage without clothes, naughty boy Seth.

Maya and Alissa are doing their own thing at the beginning of the book Alissa being on vacation with Tucker who proposed to her. Maya is at a conference. However, when Cassie calls Alissa she in turns calls Maya and they come back to Bear Claw Creek to help their friend.

The book ends on a good and bad note, they get another of the three man ring, but one is left on loose and Maya is injured. I loved this book cause it is another fast action and Cassie is trying her best to prove herself cause she is the last of the girls being the outsiders. Give it a read Jessica Anderson is an excellent author.

I know I totally read this, and usually within a day or two of marking them, but I feel as tho I’m going to have to reread them, Yet I feel as tho I need to mark that I did read it back in 2017

Though I do remember that I thoroughly enjoyed this series and so recommend it!

Better review to come once I reread it!

Also the edition was an ebook, since most of the time, they don’t include the exact ISBN or pic - they can be harder to find - perhaps in my reread I’ll b able to!

He's FBI who helped her on a murder task force and has returned when the murders start again. She's defensive and rude trying to protect her crime lab. He wants to find out if there can be more between them, but has his own issues. A bit too argumentative for me but decent romance.

4 Stars! ~ Months have passed since the kidnapping case had been closed, but is it really over? There’s a murder with chilling similarities to the skeletal remains discovered with one of the previous kidnapped victims. FBI criminologist Seth Varitek had helped with the original task force when the BCCFD had been under attack. Now the Chief has called him back in, and he knows his local counterpart, Cassie Dumont, won’t welcome him. Though all the new investigators have had to work hard to fit in, Cassie’s chip on her shoulder has made everything even more difficult. Finding Seth at her crime scene, only adds to Cassie’s chip, and while she sees the need for his help she insists that this is her territory and he’s there only as support. It becomes clear that the new murder is definitely linked to the previous kidnapping case, especially when the murderer makes an attempt on Cassie’s life and his next victim looks like she could have been Cassie’s younger sister. Seth doesn’t want to feel protective of Cassie, but flash backs to his wife’s murder years before keep interfering in his concentration and he finds himself trying to control every move she makes. Cassie isn’t about to be controlled; she’s a cop, she can look after herself.

Another gripping thriller from Ms. Andersen. Cassie grew up motherless with four overly protective older brothers. And after a scarring relationship before the Academy, she still has some self-esteem issues that she hides behind her tough don’t-mess-with-me attitude. Seth’s uncomfortable with Cassie’s fearless approach to police work; she’s too much like him, too much like his dead wife. But finding the killer and trying to stay alive, these two manage to reach deep inside and discover they are not their pasts and they can move on together. Nicely written. Great set up for the next book, Maya’s story.

Not as engrossing as the first one but solid. This one felt shorter (though on my iPad its hard to gauge length). Less crime scene work and no real added benefit to the Fla side story. Did enjoy it though and will carry on the series!
