I really enjoyed this book about Lord Nelson, the victor of Trafalgar, England's greatest hero at sea. I wish it was longer, so there could have been more detail about the kind of men who served under Nelson. The author says almost fifty American sailors served on board the Victory at Trafalgar! He also says a lot of them were black, but he doesn't make clear if they were escaped slaves from southern plantations, free blacks from the West Indies, or how they enlisted or even how Nelson felt about having them aboard. I wanted to learn so much more! I also wish the author could have told more about the massive evacuation of French royalists from Toulon, which reminded me of what is happening in the news right now. And I wanted to hear much more about Emma, Lady Hamilton, Nelson's mistress who was later played by Vivien Leigh in THAT HAMILTON WOMAN. Apparently the real Lady Hamilton looked more like Jackie Gleason than Vivien Leigh!
If you really want to understand the legacy Lord Nelson has in England today, how he is still admired and loved by English people of all ages and beliefs, go over to Wattpad and read LEEWARD by Empires of Water. This book is free and it's an epic adventure, written with sensitivity and breathless suspense. It's just as good as anything by C.S. Forester or Patrick O'Brien!
