A quick 48 pages, some of which are full length illustrations, of Poe's most famous short stories. I had been given this book when I was in high school, shelved it, and recently found a copy in our local library.
The stories are greatly abridged and have lost their gothic edge. The Hopfrog for example no longer holds the attribute of parable, but rather becomes a ditty. Pit and the Pendulum is a quick little jaunt, a glance. While the language is far easier to understand than Poe's harried, iconic prose, this book tragically excises that tone and turns it into a suburban chain restaurant.
Poe is so macabre. And brilliant. The illustrations in this are very vibrant. They kind of feel like an assault on my eyes. Not my cup of tea, but they fit Poe's work really well, I think.
