DNF at 4%

Well, this was a fast DNF. I'm sorry but the writing is just terrible. 3rd person present tense is my least favorite in a book. Add that with the cheesy unrealistic dialogue and I'm out.

3.5 stars First, the concept is awesome, second (I have to be critical) I wish it was much shorter, with less repetitive parts, for me those parts were way too much.

I made my point, now I’ll concentrate on the story. A smoothly written piece! It was delicious!
Quinn, nineteen years old, is one big brat, picking up guys, every weekend a different one, a fast hot fuck and throw them out afterward. He acts like a headless guy, just like they want and expects him to be. He is much more than that. Deep down, there sits a deeply hurt neglected boy. A broken part no one will ever witness.
Then he meets Ellis, older than Quinn, who has a certain authority over him.
What started as a tease, calling Ellis Daddy, soon is the reality. Quinn never knew for certain he needed this and he can’t believe it’s true, it’s nice as long as it lasts.
Ellis has his hands full with Quinn. The progress to connect and go forward is slow. Ellis is afraid he’ll be left alone as all his boys did.

They are delicious vocal, all the right ‘dirty’ words at the right time (besides the repetitive).
There is a lot of sexual activity. I would have appreciated some variation. The actions were hot done. The author has a lot of potentials to work with this theme. If this story had been shorter and more varied it could have had more stars because in big lines it was hot af, nice detailed, hurt/comfort well done, with flawed vulnerable personalities, smoothly written and with a good plot.
I loved it to see the guys from previous stories!

This story surprised me, im kind of stunned by how much i enjoyed it. Considering there is quote a lot of angst in parts, which is not something i usually like. However it was handled here really well, fitting to the characters and their pasts so actually a large part of why i liked this book so much.

I fell in love with Quinn and Ellis straight away, the alternating povs were perfect and allowed to see inside their heads - learn more about them and why they react the way they do so made for good progress throughout.

Such as Quinns feelings of not being enough and loneliness, the mentions of the pool and the intensity in those emotions were incredible. I truly felt with him in that constant push/pull he has, i enjoyed seeing him develop so much and moving forward was beautiful with Ellis support.

Ellis has his own issues too in his history and falling fast, desire to be needed and waiting to be left. His exploration with Quinn was incredible, seeing then slowly open up to each other and fall in love was wonderful.

Theres a hell of a lot of steamy scenes here and heavy daddy kink, just so much affection and intimate moments that i adore. Suited their relationship and them so well, although did get a little repetitive at points.

I had love/hate relationship with the side cast, majority were pretty awful in how they react to these twos relationship/age gap. Although of course they make up for it later and long time friends of Quinn, just all gone in different directions.

I did adore Delia though, she was wonderful and would love to see story for her. I know the rest of the guys have books about their relationships, but don't care for them as much.

Overally this was an interesting read with some serious tones and lots of chemistry, along with a happy ending.

I dont plan to continue the series though, as all look to be even more angsty and this was just about limit for me. I did love the authors writing style though, so may have a look at some of her other books xx

Arc copy provided courtesy of Julia McBryant.
All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Ellis is refined and strict, which I'm sure will be fully necessitated by Quinn's unruly nature and self loathing. Ellis can be a snob, but it's in an arrogantly competent sugar daddy way. He also has hangups about his interest in younger men because his mother is overly judgmental.

Quinn is all barbs and sharp edges over wounded vulnerability. His bratty attitude is mostly a wall to keep others from hurting him.

The men have good compatibility, they've both been hurt by their families.

No spoilers, but it's good to see Quinn's friends and family accept Ellis in the end.

I've read so many insta-love books, and it's very hit or miss. With the amount of people who've hurt Quinn, his walls came down very quickly. While I liked the characters together, I found myself wanting them to spend more time learning about each other and fleshing out the relationship.

Quinn needs someone to help him fix himself. He needs someone to fix him. He needs someone like Ellis, who will Daddy him and take care of him the way Quinn doesn't, won't, take care of himself. The question is, will Quinn ever let Ellis into his life enough that Ellis can actually accomplish that. Or will Quinn continue to just act the brat on the surface, or actually let Ellis tell him that Quinn's good enough, deserves to be taken care of the way his family never took care of him, never valued him?

Let's start with the things I liked about this story: A) Quinn and Ellis. I didn't get a lot of them beneath the surface, not a lot of character development, until the end, but what little I did get of them, I liked them both. B) The steamy scenes. At first, I liked them because they were pretty hot, and had a purpose (Ellis' way of teaching Quinn). But...and there's a big but, they became too plentiful, repetitive, and overwhelmed the story.

Now let's go with what I didn't like: A) Everything else - the writing, the lack of much character development, the shallowness of it all.

I absolutely cannot stand it when a story is told in third person present tense. It sounds and feels weird and awkward, and is not an effective way for me to relate to the story and/or the characters.

As I said before, at first I liked the sex scenes. But after awhile it became clear this story relied on them too much, instead of developing the story, they were the story. Too much sex is almost as bad as not enough, or closed door sex. It was obvious that Quinn and Ellis were attracted to each other. I get it already! No need for it every other scene.

And finally, I just could not for the life of me, connect to this story. I liked what little of Quinn and Ellis I got below their outer surface, but that's about it for what I liked. Everything else just did not work for me.

Will I read another story by this author? Probably not, especially if I read an excerpt and find it's told in third person present tense.

Holy WOW!

If you are a Julia McBryant fan then this is a must read. If you have never heard of this author then get to reading. I would recommend the other books in the series first as it will help you understand the supporting characters.

I fell in love with Quinn and Ellis. Quinn was the "oops baby" that no one really cared for. He was in the way, he could do nothing right. His family treated him so poorly. And throw in the fact that he came out when he was 16 didn't help either. Ellis is twice Quinn's age and fell for him instantly. Neither really knew that they had this "daddy kink" thing until Quinn blurted it out during sexy times and well, it just bloomed from there.

This book will have you rooting for these two so hard. Quinn needed someone to make him feel special and not a burden. Ellis needed someone to care for who wouldn't leave him. These two did so much growing together and it was beautiful.

If you like tons of steamy sexy times then this is the book for you. I am the type of person that I can't get enough of the sex scenes. I mean, isn't that why we read this genre to begin with? I love the stories as well, don't get me wrong.

You will go thru quite a few emotions while binge reading this book. I am not one for crying when I read, but I did get misty eyed at one point.

This book was fantastic and I can't wait to see what Julia comes up with next.

I totally volunteered to read an advance reader copy of this book.

I don”t even know how to describe this book. Sweet? Sad? Happy? Sexy? Deliciously kinky? In fact, it”s all of the above, masterfully mixed in a cocktail that quenches your thirst, but leaves you wanting for more. I hope sometimes, in a near or distant future, the author will make this book part of a series, because she got me hooked.

I avoid including spoilers in my reviews, but I tell you this: you”ll fell in love with Quinn and Ellis with each turn of the page, keeping fingers crossed for them, wishing for their relationship to work. The prose has an internal musicality of its own, sucking you in and keeping you there from the first line to the last word.

A great read, full of scorching-hot sex scenes. However, it wasn”t the only thing I liked about this book. The somehow oppressive atmosphere of Savannah, with its rich, bored people, whose main occupation is gossip, with the main and secondary characters struggling to get out of it or plying on it is another thing that drew me to this story.

And of course, the main characters. My heart ached for Quinn, the apparently rich, privileged, spoiled party boy. But how deceiving appearances can be! And Ellis, with his cool, even cold exterior, and the caring heart hiding underneath... This book will make you cry, laugh, curse and jump with joy, sometimes all at once.

Highly recommended!

This was a bittersweet ride, the story of two lonely souls searching for someone to make them whole, someone who could give a meaning to their existence. Quinn and Ellis. The party boy and the stern man. The successful architect and the college student. What could those two have in common?

Or maybe, this is what completing each other is all about: finding in the other one what you desperately need and miss. Quinn and Ellis” journey is one of self-discovery and, above all, acceptance. This book offered me an unique reading experience, and I warmly recommend it.

What a good book! The main characters are so good together, you can’t help but want them to succeed. I will definitely read any subsequent books in the series. The angst in this book is perfect when mixed with the intimate scenes. Although the kink isn’t a lot in the book.
Would definitely recommend though.

Nice book

This was a nice book.

The writing was different than what I am used to, so I didn't always get into.

The story itself was good, if a little heavy on the sexy times (but that's me).

I liked Ellis and Quinn, they click, and I loved the relationship between them.
Overall a good book

The story was really good. But the grammar, my God. The tenses were wrong often. I kept thinking it was baby talk, since I WAS promised age play. And then I'd realize it was a typo. Or maybe that's really how they talk in the South. Who knows.

Be warned - this book is one long sex scene with a little plot thrown in. It was fantastic, but you need to expect copious amounts of sex.

We meet our two characters - and they were done incredibly well. You cannot help but empathize with both these damaged men. They are what take this from the level of cheap porn to the level of an NC-17 art house flick. The secondary characters were even excellently done, which is saying something because we don’t see much of them. The author is gifted in building realistic, dimensional characters.

Then the sex starts, and it’s sex, a little plot, sex, sex, a little plot, sex, friends, sex, a little trouble, sex, sex, happiness, sex, sex, trouble, sex. And I think I missed a few sec scenes in that summary.

Sassy, kinky, a little angsty, and a good time overall.

Stunning

I can't remember ever wanting to stop at the end of the first book of a series because the ending was that solid and I didn't want the author to take any of that away from me. First time for everything, I guess.

The story is well edited and phenomenally written. This POV is really hard to make work, but the author weilds it well. It's a patter, almost beat poetry at points, definitely a rhythm with a pace that speeds up and slows down and creates a tone, a context, and emotions. At 7% of the book I was sold. At 16% I cried for the first time. That was just the first time.

Ellis and Quinn were gold.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Warning, while I try my best to make sure there are no spoilers in my review, there is always a chance that something any review says could count as a spoiler for you. If you want to just know my overall opinion on the book, and the if I recommend it, please skip to my Overall and Would I Recommend It section.

I have several friends who are very into same sex romances and I will say I have read some good ones, but they tend to be a hit or miss for me, and that could 100% be because of the ones I have tried. I must say, with how fast the hot and heavy scenes came on, I thought this one would be a miss, but it quickly took me by surprise in a very good way. There were quite a few things in this book that I have never experienced, however, I found that I could develop deeper emotional connections with the characters thanks to how things were presented during these scenes.

Let’s start out with the blunt part of this. One of the things I have had a hard time with when it comes to m/m romance is the hotter scenes. In the other books I have picked up with this, the heat level just never really got turned up for me. I Wish I Were Special was a whole different story. I found the steamy heat level in this one to really be cranked up. I loved how the story got more into the characters heads and how those scenes showed stimulation of the mind as well as the body in ways that were subtle yet effective. I loved how this revealed so many vulnerabilities, strengths, and needs the characters had that went beyond the bedroom and played more into the characters' everyday lives.

I really liked Quinn. One thing that really stood out to me right from the start was how precise he is. Quinn doesn’t do a thing without it having a deeper purpose both to add to the persona he hides behind and how he copes. His past experiences might not be as harsh as other characters I have read about, but honestly that just made it more relatable. My heart bled for Quinn at times and how his past plays into how he acts and thinks. I can see how some people might think that he acts a little off, but the kind of trauma he has experienced would absolutely shift his personality and audited in the way it did. The amount of research and heart put into his character was beautiful.

Quinn also has a longing that has been simmering just under the surface for a long time, a longing he knows how to cover up and does so well. He is also quite rebellious in a very intriguing way, and I loved how that played into the story. The way that his needs bubble up at times and how he tries so hard to hide it while still clearly crying out for someone to help him really got to me and opened up all the feels. His craving for his and Ellis’s particular kink was juicy and also played in really well with his character.

Ellis was a really perfect match for Quinn. All he wants is to help heal and love Quinn, but along the way he discovers some things about himself and his own needs as well. I really liked how he helped Quinn overcome the situations he is in and how he brings out a side of Quinn that was being painfully hidden. Ellis has some painful aspects to his past as well that he needs to be healed from, and whether or not Quinn realized it to start with, he is the perfect man for that job. Honestly, Ellis was also an extremely steamy character to read.

I will say, this is for sure an erotica and there are elements of dominance play, but the growth in this book was really gripping. Not only did both characters grow as individuals, but their relationship developed in a way that was beautiful.

This story at its core was about healing, and while some may find it odd that sex can be involved with that, there are times when it actually is very much part of healing. I really liked that this author did not shy away from the dom/sub need that both characters clearly had, and allowed the physical aspect of healing to intermix with the mental. This form of healing gave both characters amazing growth and allowed me to develop a sense of deep connection.

Overall:
I wish I were Special was a wonderful M/M romance that really pulled me in. I loved the way in which each character brings out sides

Would I Recommend It:

This book does have elements of submissive dominant play, so if that makes you uncomfortable than no, but if you are comfortable with that than yes, I think this is an enjoyable book any M/M romance lover will enjoy.

Quinn has everything... except love and attention from anyone who matters. He grew up at the youngest child well after his family thought they were already perfect, so he is always the one forgotten. His friends are all paired off. So he parties and slowly self destructs while looking for any kind of affection, even if it isn't real. Meanwhile Ellis Ashford is looking for someone to save, even if he gets his heart broken in the process... again.

Loves & Likes:
⦁ Just enough hurt/comfort daddy drama
⦁ Hot dirty talk (when it wasn't repetitive)

Peeves:
⦁ 3rd person present tense... ugh
⦁ Repetitive phrases and arguments
⦁ Too much sex, yeah I said it

Favorite Quote:
"'M scared.” This is a big admission on Quinn’s end. Ellis runs his fingers through Quinn’s gorgeous hair.
“Of what?” Ellis makes his voice soft and caring.
“That I’m making a huge mistake.” Another big admission, more honesty.
“Quinn,” Ellis says gently, “you can always walk away. No one’s keeping you here. No one’s making you be here.”
“Except what if I fall in love with you and I don’t wanna leave?” he asks all in a rush. Ellis can hear the end of that sure as if Quinn had spoken it: and you make me leave anyway.

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!
Oh my gosh! This book!
I loved it to pieces.
Equal parts angsty, tragic, heartwarming and oh so sexy.

Julia is a fairly new author to me, but since finding, and reading her first short story, I have devoured everything she has written; literally back to back.
This one, it seems, is her first full length story about one obscure side character who has been mentioned in a couple of the previous books. (this is a series of books taking place in a common universe/circle of friends and acquaintances). This title, however stands totally alone.

The somewhat sad story of Quinn, who has felt left out and rejected all his life, and is spinning tragically out of control.
A chance meeting with Ellis, a much older guy, results in the two immediately recognising a connection and a chemistry, and Ellis takes it upon himself to rescue the young man and save him from himself.
And so begins a stunningly beautiful tale of push and pull between the two.
All I can say is:
Read this book!
Discover this author!
CAUTION:
For those that are offended by highly descriptive steamy scenes, this book is loaded. But I will go so far as to say, these are some of the best sexy times I have ever read.
I don't hesitate to highly recommend this book.

Standalone mm gay romance.
Heat level: 5 🔥 (scorching)
Adult content 18+ for sexual heat and frequency.
Profanity... Plenty.
No violence or specific homophobic themes. (although there is mention of such in past recollections by mc).
And by the way: a superbly appropriate five star cover! This is perfectly Quinn!

Disclaimer :
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this title directly from the author and volunteered to read and review...so glad I did!

Hot daddy kink, just ok story

Ellis and Quinn are hot together, and overall I enjoyed the book, but I found it to be just ok. I am not a fan of the writing style, so that kind of put me off the story initially. And this needs another pass through by an editor. Lots of misused words and basic grammar mistakes. Plus some excess stuff that could be cut out and make the book more pleasant to read.

I don’t often complain about this, but there was just way too much sex and not enough actual growth between the couple. Most of their time not having sex is summed up and rushed. I will say that they make a lot of mistakes and learn from them, but it never felt like they truly talked through things like adults. It was always a sort of compromise or reaction to a mistake (or perceived mistake). I feel like we never really got to know the characters beyond what we initially learn and can infer.

I really didn’t like the side characters, but I think that’s more a personal preference.

I probably won’t read anymore by this author unless someone strongly recommends it. I’m definitely not excited about the second book in this series. No spoilers, but it does not seem to be a natural next step in this couple’s relationship. Almost like the trope in the book is popular, so the author is forcing it onto this couple.

I never felt like reading this book was a chore, but it wasn’t especially exciting nor did it make me want to read it all in one sitting.

I say give this book a read because you may enjoy it more than me. It just didn’t do it for me. The dirty talk is really hot, which I love, but it sadly wasn’t enough to make me like the book more.

I read this after reading Hurricane Dreams because I wanted to see what other deliciously Southern characters Julia McBryant could dream up.

I'm a fan of Daddy kink in MM books, and the author delivered one of the best I've read. Both Daddy and boy are flawed, searching for acceptance and love, which they unexpectedly find with each other. It's a rocky journey, though, with plenty of missteps and a ton of push-pull as their relationship grows.
Quinn, the 19-year-old student whose birth was an unwelcome surprise to his family, puts on the veneer of self-confidence and does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, as a way of flouting Savannah's smothering society expectations.
Ellis, the 38-year-old architect who falls head-over-heels for the young libertine, exercises his "savior complex" in an attempt to save Quinn, conveniently overlooking his own need for rescue.

There's also plenty of hot-as-a-Southern-summer-night sex, too, almost to the point where the Savannah chorus's supposition that Ellis only wanted sex from Quinn, but not quite. It's their way of communicating when they are no longer able to "use words" as Ellis often instructs Quinn.

If you enjoy a hefty does of angst with your daddy kink, you'll love this book. I did!
