Beth Laycock’s books are influenced by her time living overseas as well as the gritty, urban landscape of the north of England where she grew up.

She has been reading romance since she was old enough to tell herself that line every book lover does—just one more chapter.

As a teenager she attempted to write her first novel, and many more since then that are still gathering dust on her bookshelf. It wasn’t until she discovered the M/M genre that her muse showed up and refused to quit telling her stories about beautiful men finding love together. She hasn’t stopped scribbling them down since. Beth’s muse usually shows up when she is in the shower, is allergic to cleaning, rarely lets Beth watch TV, and insists she drinks copious amounts of coffee so she can turn caffeine into words.

Beth’s books range from sweet to sexy, long to short, contemporary to paranormal, but a HEA is always guaranteed.

Guarding His Heart is a quick, sweet, emotional read. I loved Lane’s determination to find out exactly what happened to his brother, even if the way he went about it seemed a bit implausible.
I did feel sad for him, he wanted answers about his brother so badly, and it seemed he was stymied at every turn. It was kind of tough seeing him hurt.
With such a short read, things moved quite quickly, especially between Lane and Tristan. In the end, though, their connection was what helped Lane get through everything. What started out as insta-lust did develop into something real, and I was glad they found each other.
I do wish we had gotten more resolution when it came to Lane’s brother, to be honest- for really being the main focus of the story I felt it was wrapped up too quickly/easily.
All in all, an enjoyable, easy read.

3.5 stars rounded down because still no 1/2 stars here on GR.

It's the not knowing that's the hardest...

Three months after his family is notified that his brother Jake is MIA Lane Matthews decides to change his enlistment from the army reserves to a full time active enlistment and with some help he manages to ensure that his first overseas posting is to Jeddah, the posting that his brother was at when he disappeared.

I can truly believe that it’s the not knowing that’s the worst for any family in this situation and I didn’t find it hard to imagine Lane doing what he did to try and find his brother. When Lane gets to Jeddah his sole purpose is to try and find his brother or at least find information about what happened to him and where he might be. Entering into a relationship isn’t even on his radar and when he first sets eyes on Tristan it’s lust on first sight…seriously it’s maybe 24 hours between ‘hello’ and ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’am …I mean man…see lust at first sight but as the days pass Lane and Tristan get to know each other building on their initial attraction as the relationship quickly slides from lust to friendship to lovers.

I think I just needed things to be a little longer with a bit more time and focus spent on both the relationship and Lane’s search for his brother…so yeah, I guess this is me saying I’m greedy and I just needed a little bit more to take this from a good and enjoyable story to something even stronger. However, what was here for me was really solid. I really liked Tristan and Lane as a couple but as individuals I have to admit that Tristan was my favorite. Lane had moments when I have to admit I was fairly certain he’d left his brain in bed that day and I feared for his well being but for the most part those moments were tied to his fear and anxiety over his missing brother so honestly the poor life choices really didn’t seem inappropriate either.

There were also a couple of secondary characters that I’d love to see get their own stories. First off is Ben Martins…Tristan and Lane’s housemate. I liked Ben and he just struck me as being a big ole teddy bear a big, muscular, built like a tank…yes, I have the feeling this is a big, muscular, sexy teddy bear that we’re talking about here…*sigh* Ben so needs a story and then there’s Lewis…he was a new member of Tristan’s team and we only saw him briefly and while Tristan indicated that he maybe wasn’t a great guy, he wasn’t on page long enough to give the reader as true sense of his character…so what can I say but ‘enquiring minds want to know?’.

I have to admit for personal reasons I was immediately drawn to this story because as a child I remember my grandmother telling me about her sons who went to war. She had six sons, 3 of them stayed home, 3 of them went overseas to fight in WWII and of those 3, one son came home, she buried another and the third one was listed as MIA. I remember her telling me that this was the hardest thing to deal with…the not knowing. If he was dead than she wanted to bury him, to grieve his death, if he wasn’t than she was left to wonder where he was, was he ok, why didn’t he try to come home if he was able to? And I have to admit I occasionally still find myself wondering what became of my missing uncle.

Now the only thing that I haven’t address is the ending and I have to admit the ending was definitely one of the best parts of the story for me. It worked there as solid dose of the real world in it and that’s all I’m going to say about that.

‘Guarding His Heart’ is only the third story that I’ve read by this author and while ‘Miracle on Three Kings Day’ is still my favorite I really enjoyed this one and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author to see if that changes.

3.5 stars - This is the story about a guy who joins the military so he can be sent to the same warzone where his brother went MIA in hopes of getting some answers. His first real encounter is with his housemate with whom he shares an instant attraction, but for a hot second, he believes said housemate is straight. It quickly becomes apparent the opposite is true, and they hookup without much communication. It is this lack of communication that causes problems. Likewise, Lane is there on a mission – to find his brother – and falling for someone is not in the plans.

I enjoyed this, and the sexual chemistry was definitely there. However, it never really got past the superficial feel for me. I never really saw the connection between Tristan and Lane aside from the physical, and the story about the brother seemed like a total stab in the dark. I can understand him wanting resolution though, so I was definitely rooting for him to find positive answers. While that seemed a major focus of the story, it was wrapped up rather quickly, and the relationship between Lane and Tristan took center stage.

This was a really quick read, and I would have loved to have seen more development between Tristan and Lane. All in all, however, it was an enjoyable story with a bittersweet ending. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Ms. Laycock in the future.

Lane is determined to find out what happened to his brother. Now he's in Jeddah, which is near Riyadh, where Jake was last seen. He just has to use his newest job to find out what happened. Then he walks into his new lodgings and right into Tristan's arms (and bed). Will he allow Tristan to distract him from his real mission? Is Tristan going to break his heart when he acts as if suddenly Lane isn't more than just his new roommate?

This is a sweet bit of insta-love. It's a kinda short, so is rushed, but all in all, I liked it and thought Lane and Tristan made a great couple.

Lane becomes a full-time soldier to find his brother, Jake, who is MIA. To get closer to where he disappeared, Lane relocates from Lancashire to Jeddah. But what he found was more than the heat of the sun. He found Tristan.
The story is told in the first person, entirely from Lane’s viewpoint. Technically, it wasn’t bad, although there were a few unqualified autonomous eyes and fingers. The story's start was magnificent and emotional, and the imagery was superb. Unfortunately, from there, it went downhill.
I picked up this story because of the blurb, expecting to read some good military action, a bit of detective work, a dose of romance, and, to quote the blurb – of course, a HEA. As the blurb says that Lane got swept off course, I felt the same happened with the story.
Lane intends to search for his brother, but this arc ends as more of a footnote with the odd flourish of information. After such excellent opening chapters, it soon devolves into more sex than story – which is something one can find just about anywhere. However, if all someone wants to read is sex in a military setting, this fits the bill. And sex sells, so who knows.
‘Of course, a HEA’ – this statement needed to come with caveats. I kept reading because of this assurance. Again, I was sorely disappointed to the point where I cried, and several hours later, I still had a lump in my throat. They weren’t the kind of tears that one experiences after a good film that you want to go back to with a glass of wine and a box of chocolates. The next day, that upset turned to anger, because this story had so much potential.
Many military books are out there, and the genre has a strong following and a high benchmark. This story fell short.
I apologize to the author for this review. But, while the tale is short, much more could have been made of the arc than the route taken. It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a visceral reaction to a story, but how it left me feeling was none of the sensations of how I like to feel at the end of a book. Hence, two stars = not my cup of tea.
On the plus side, the world is made up of a myriad of people all with different reading tastes – so it is highly likely that it will appeal to some.

Caught Off Guard by Beth Laycock June 15, 2022

I enjoyed reading this - again. :-)

This book was originally published as Guarding His Heart and I read and reviewed it back in October 2019. While I rarely re-read books, I wanted to read this one again to see if I could detect any changes. I believe there was a bit of new content added but the story was basically the same.

There’s not a lot of time for character development in this length book but I enjoy reading them because it’s easy for me to finish in one evening. This is an insta-lust story and I don’t usually mind those but for some reason that part of this book didn’t set very well with me, but the sexy time between Lane and Tristan was pretty hot so I ignored my discomfort with the insta-lust.

I felt the emotional impact of the story that I think the author was going for, so that was good. Lane really wanted to find out what happened to his brother. While the conclusion to the story came pretty quickly, I certainly wasn't expecting what happened so that was a big plus for me. I love a good epilogue and the one for this book, set one year into the future, is pretty good. Since Tristan was a US soldier and Lane was a Brit, it would have been a bit more satisfying for me to know how they manage to stay together after their enlistments were up.

Mini rant:
I really wish authors would mention it in the blurb when a book is reissued with a new title. When they don’t do this it can make readers really angry if they repurchase a book that they already own.
End of rant.

I want to close by saying again that I enjoyed reading this story and I’m not sorry that I spent the time re-reading it.

Lane’s brother is MIA. So Lane requests an assignment with Her Majesty’s Armed Forces in Jeddah to find out what happened to Jake. Told in first person, all through Lane’s POV, he meets a soldier by the name of Tristan who is with the US Army. They are sharing the same accommodations at the base.

I must say the blurb intrigued me. I don’t know much about the army or the middle east, so I was much looking forward to this m/m romance read. I am happy to say the author did a great job of blending the romance, mystery, and setting seamlessly, while also giving me strong details about life in the army.

Now, the narrative did get heavy at times with detail, but it didn’t detract too much from the story, because the chemistry between Tristan and Lane was red hot. Tristan is a man in the closet, while Lane is fully out, and not about to be shoved into a closet. And this is where the sub-plot happens beneath Lane’s sleuthing through the streets of Jeddah to find out what happened to Jake.

I enjoyed both plots. Tristan even joins in by helping Lane unearth what happened to Jake. The secondary characters are also a nice touch to the novel. They bring to life the stress, loneliness, and danger of being far from home.

Lane’s POV was wonderfully done. He took me through the streets of Jeddah, let me into his feelings over Tristian, and the pain of missing his brother. Well done, author.

I much enjoyed the character Tristan and do wish he had his own POV, but the author did a great job with Tristan’s expressions and dialogue to give the reader a good hint of what was going through his head.

This is a wonderful short read that I recommend. The setting really makes this novel. Do yourself a favour and get a copy.

Lane Mathew’s older brother goes MIA after he is stationed in Jeddah. Wanting answers, Lane applies for deployment in the same area to get answers himself. On his first day he meets one of his housemates, Tristan, who is enlisted. What starts as a bumpy friendship turns into so much more. Lane takes every opportunity to find out what happened to his brother. He also falls for Tristan.

This book ended in a twist I did not expect, making it such a good book. It gives you some leads, so you form an opinion and then boom right out of left field. I liked this book, and I did like Lane. Lane and Tristan together was even better. This book did make me cry a bit.

I wish this would have been a series so I could see more of Lane and Tristan. It could have been. 5 star read; however, after you find out what happened to Lane's brother, it ends very fast, and it’s kind of disappointing how fast. A nice quick read.

I have mixed feelings about Lane and Tristan's story. On the one hand, I did find the mystery of what happened to Lane's brother captivating, and after I warmed up to it I enjoyed his and Tristan's steamy romance. I thought their quiet nights together were really sweet, and I was invested in finding out if they could make a relationship work when they had to be so careful in public. But I also struggled with the writing style multiple times throughout this story and did not like the ending. It's not that I was expecting things to magically turn out perfectly, but the reveal and abrupt epilogue left me feeling very off-balance and uncomfortable. Any happiness I might have had about Tristan and Lane's relationship was tainted by the way the plotline wrapped up, and ultimately I just wasn't satisfied.

Sudden changes

This was pretty good, caught interest and had a fascinating idea. The desperation that Lane feels to find out what happened to his brother makes sense, even driving him to do something he never really imagined. Then finding solace in his roommate, Tristan, works out to. The two have chemistry and the awkward figuring out is a bit funny. It just felt a little like it was skipping over things. Lane had been in the reserves, and the way he is out there is almost feels like he has no training. Then it was pretty clear he didn't truly want to do this but had only gone into full service to find his brother. This never really seems to get addressed though they do at least seem to not be in an active zone. It felt that the investigation into his brother and the relationship and the fear over the job were sort of all separate stories that didn't really work together, so while it was interesting it was a little bit flat. An easy quick read though.

Care packages matter! Lane transitioned from the reserves to active duty in the hope of finding information on his MIA brother. The story captures good reactions of the first moments in country during a first deployment. His single minded dedication in his pursuit of the truth could be admirable. Tristan, his room mate provides solid support and friendship helping Lane get used to his new environment. Lane's behavior as a westerner in a foreign country during wartime is a bit unconventional. I would have liked more depth learning about Tristan the man and Ben, the other roommate. Smooth storyline flow. Does Lane find his brother? Does Lane return to and architect career or does he stay in the military? Does Lane get help for his PTSD? Nice story.

This story moves quickly and packs an emotional punch. The premise is fraught— a search for Lane’s missing brother in the middle of deployment— and the physical chemistry between Lane and Tristan is definitely strong. Their progression from pure lust to something emotional as well as physical happens quickly, but it fits the premise and style of the story. There’s an interesting mixture of bitter and sweet in the ending, which also felt like a good fit for the kind of story this is.

Lane is on a mission to find his brother and that search drives the story here. He meets Tristan when he's posted overseas to continue his search and Tristan turns out to be the support Lane needs at critical times. Their relationship progresses quickly but believably and there is a depth of emotion to it, not just the physical attraction. Definitely some surprises as the plot develops and that makes for a great read.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

I think, this book fell in my queue right at the point I needed it to, and I really REALLY liked! Not quite enough to love it, but I will explain why.

Only Lane gets a voice. Yes, yes YES I know I say it often enough, but I am big enough and ugly enough to admit when I might be wrong about this, but I NEEDED Tristan, and I don't get him.

I needed to hear what he thought of Lane, right at the beginning. I needed to know what he was feeling when he kisses Lane that first time. I needed to know what was going through his head when he blanks Lane and I NEEDED, I really NEEDED to know what he was feeling when things are finally sorted with Lane's brother.

I can't word this bit right, without giving anything away, so if this doesn't make sense, I'm sorry!

Things with Lane's brother don't end how I thought they would and (please don't hate me!) I actually loved that they didn't. It was a twist I did not see coming, and I was reading at work, and I must have made a noise cos a customer asked me if I was ok. So, well played there, Ms Laycock, very well played.

Like I said, only Lane gets a say, and that's the only reason I can't stretch to 5 stars!

4 really REALLY good stars

3.5 stars A great start to the story as a mystery of the MIA of Lanes brother has him focused. A fasted paced story with Lanes POV as Lane and Tristan friendship progresses in to heat.
A down sided con to this book Lane character was having panic attacks imaging his brothers death..mehh An okay ending.

Lane 25 was on a double mission to find his brother in his first army station.
Staff Sarg Tristan 32 was Lanes housemate.

This was...difficult for me. With such a short book I generally hope the conflict is simple, the romance is well-founded, and the ending is wrapped up nicely as either an HEA or an HFN because it's the start of a series. Sadly, this book just didn't measure up in anything except the romantic conclusion. That's honestly the only reason it's a 3 star and not a 2 star book for me.

My biggest issue was the plot regarding Jake. Virtually nothing happened until just about the end of the story and the reveal was a huge letdown. I understand that the answer needed to be simple so it could end by the time the book was over, but I'll be honest here and just say that it was an incredible disappointment. The movement and flow of the plot was virtually non-existent and what happened to Jake felt like a cop out because the author ran out of time. That whole thing needed a re-write. If this were turned into a novel it could have really grown into what it promised and I would have been much happier.

With Tristan and Lane I felt there was a bit of chemistry and a couple very sweet moments, but nothing that spelled out an intense romance. The PTSD thing was handled poorly, the unnecessary stuff with the separation and the team member and the concerns with the roommate was too much for such a short story, the chemistry was there but the actual romantic growth needed attention. There was really a lot of potential but suffered from no clear path for their relationship to move toward.

The premise was all kinds of interesting, but the carry-through was lacking and the characters were uninspiring. Lane was in his head for so much of the story and felt incredibly juvenile. The liberties taken with military procedures went a bit far, but I would have been willing to overlook that if there were actually some purpose served by the setting rather than it being a consequence of the premise. Overall this story needs a re-write and a critical (in a critique way, not criticism) beta reader to catch the many instances of the story not fulfilling its own brief. I loved the sentiments at the end of the story between Lane and Tristan, their kitchen moment of passion, the roommate, and Tristan's line about tantrums and an audience. I wish there had been more of a solid story to give those things the support they needed and that the plot was more balanced. There is immense potential here and I'd be absolutely in for a reworked version of the story if it ever came around.

What I Think: I enjoyed this so much. Coming on the heels of a lot of high-pressure reading and work, it was just what the doctor should have ordered if he were smart enough to read MM Romance. The romance flowed so easily between them, even though Lane is a mess most of the time. And it’s all because these two had the courage to be open and natural from the very start. Oh, Lane doth protest too much. So much that I couldn’t help laughing, knowing full well all that self-talk was a waste of time. It’s all well and fine to talk and decide to put up boundaries but the heart and body want what they want, non? Tristan feels too good to be true and it’s making me hold my breath even as I fall for him too.
There are lovemaking scenes that you never forget and then there are those that make your heart throb. I didn’t expect the latter to be in this book but damn. It made my heart throb and ache at its sensual tenderness. But even this can’t take away the psychological horror that Lane lives with every day as he searches for a truth he might never find but that doesn’t stop him. Even though I’m a firm believer in knowledge, rather than ignorance, I know it will still hurt. Tristan is solid as a rock and just as straight, open and honest. This is not a man that plays games and he made me want so bad. Made me want a Laness of my own that I can use all my thorns and thickened exterior to protect. I’m so protective of Lane that I adore Tristan for being there to protect him as he adjusts to a new life. Having had intimate experience with moving and new experiences (ten schools between primary and secondary levels, apart from other moves), I just want to wrap Lane up and spirit him away. Lane does have that peculiar sweetness that makes you just want to love and care for him. It takes a special kind of gentleness to create sweetness even under the shadow of fear and loss yet this Authoress managed to do just that. I just know that I’ll be dipping into this tale again and again just to hold on to some of its sugar.

Verdict? A comfort keeper of a tale so sweet and fresh its a fairytale assuring us that no matter where you are, if you let it, love will find you.

For me,the story had a few good pros and sadly,a big con.

Amongst the pros is the plotline, because of the mystery of Jake's disappearance. I absolutely wanted to know what happened to him. And I definitely liked the descriptive writing style, the way Beth Laycock made me land in the middle of the desert, feel the heat and have a clear image of Lane's surroundings.

And my favorite part of the book is Tristan. He's the kind of man I'd wish for myself: giving, caring, romantic. And so darn patient with Lane.

Because I myself lost it with the man a few times. And here comes my big con for the story: Lane. He has this grand idea to come to Jeddah and find his missing brother. That brings him honor. Too bad that he ruins it with his immature ways of reacting to things that don't go his way. Instead of an army reserve soldier, he seems more like a foot tapping, pouting princess.  And he admits himself that sometimes he can act like a childish prick, which helps with diminishing the irritation toward his behavior.

I have to give him credit for being unstoppable in his search for Jake, his brother. The love for his sibling and the despair of not knowing what happened to him are tangible, and so is Lane's need to find out the truth.

𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 is ,all in all,an interesting romance/ mystery that kept me reading to the end. Which didn't completely take by surprise, but I'd hoped to be different.

Recommended.

Endearing, steamy, and honest! I loved Lane & Tristan!!

This story felt very authentic and I was transported to the middle east and what it could be like to be there. With Lane looking for his brother, my heart broke for him and to be in a place where he could be killed for being who he is, it definitely adds extra tension to the story. I found the military elements and especially the compound and style of living very authentic and I really liked Tristan's character and could definitely swoon over him. I found their relationship and connection very organic and really enjoyed their journey, through challenges, hard times, heat, and a difficult place for them to be themselves.

The story and writing style are very emotive and I could feel for every stage of Lane's journey and especially his heartbreaking journey to find his brother. I liked that Beth kept it real and honest and I loved Lane and Tristan's new and old Christmas traditions. I did find the lack of Christmas revealing and as someone from a Christmas loving family, it was interesting to see when holidays could be like in other places.

An emotional story but with a super sweet HEA. A winner for me!

Guarding His Heart is a short and fast insta-love romance. My review is a tough one to write.

Lane meets Tristan when he goes into active duty to try to find his brother. What he ends up finding is love with Tristan. It's a story of searching for one's brother and finding a partner instead.

I liked this story a lot, but it's definitely a fast story without a lot of detail. I didn't really feel their connection until the end, but it didn't matter much. I still liked it, as the writing kept me intrigued throughout.

Their story involves some confusion, as you'd expect from an insta-love romance. It involves hiding in the military, a mystery of what happened to Lane's brother, and a budding romance. And holy crap, the ending just blew me away. The emotions, the support, everything is riveting and well done.

Lane and Tristan are a great couple. They are super hot together, with some steamy rimming. The only thing I was left wanting was some more of them; more depth, more connection.

Guarding His Heart by Beth Laycock is a standalone, contemporary m/m romance with a military tint. Lane goes off into a warzone to look for his brother, a soldier who is MIA and whose family is growing weary of waiting for answers. He knew he was risking his life by coming to Jeddah, but he never expected to lose his heart as well. Meeting is roommate, Tristaan, throws him off kilter... along with the truths he is uncovering regarding his brother.

This story deals with some big topics, anxiety, PTSD, missing family members, the military... but the author does a great job weaving an intriguing tale with interesting characters. The story will make you feel emotions and want answers... I shed some tears. Overall, a very satisfying read.

I really enjoyed this story and found it to be a very sweet romance, centred around a rather emotional mystery over what happened to Lane's brother. Lane's desperation and anxiety to discover the truth hit me hard, especially the traumatic nightmares he experienced. It was well-written, and Lane's emotional turmoil felt very raw and real. If it weren't for the heartwarming connection he forged with Tristan, his soldier housemate, I'm sure Lane would've fallen apart, taking me with him. Instead, we were given a cute makeshift Christmas celebration, and plenty of cuddles and steamy action. In this way, Guarding His Heart managed to be a beautiful and uplifting story.

[I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review].

This is more like 3.5 stars for me. I quite liked this. Although the characters did fall for each other pretty quick, I think it started as instant lust and not love. The love part develops over a few weeks.
The story was a good set up. Soldier goes MIA and his younger brother comes to find what happens to him. Lane was a little petulant and childish at times but this could have been due to the emotions of new country, new people and trying to locate his brother.
Tristan didn’t really get a background story. He just was there. And as it is told from Lane’s POV, we don’t get any type of character build on Tristan.
Having said that, it was a good, fast read. Enjoyed it.

Lane is a young British Army Reserve soldier.
He's got himself stationed in the Middle East where his brother has gone missing.
He's sharing a base house with an older American soldier, Tristan.
When they meet, sparks fly but there's also a little of a bit of animosity between them because they get off on the the wrong foot.
As they get to know one another, Lane opens up about his brother and they begin a relationship.
There are pitfalls along the way in the form of misunderstandings and having to keep their relationship secret.
There's also the mystery of what happened to Lane's brother.
This was a really quick, sweet story.

A story with both angst and a lot of emotion. I enjoyed the mystery and the romance. Tristan and Lane were good together, and the story was pretty well thought out.

I understood Lane wanting to discover his brother's whereabouts, but I wanted too shake him up and tell him to get his s**t together at times. He was such a drama queen at times. Just felt that he needed to toughen up, and stop his flouncing about!

Having said that, as I've said above, this is a well written book with, on the whole, decent characters. I liked the way in which the romance developed and I loved the way in which Tristan handled Lane. 3 and a half stars.
