Tony Johnston has written many acclaimed books for young people. She and her husband lived in Mexico for fifteen years, where they raised their children. She now lives in San Marino, California.
This is an awesome poem book for children because it contains several poems, each written in both English and Spanish. All of the poems are about Mexican culture in some way. When sharing these creative poems and vivid, colorful illustrations with a class, not only are you exposing them to excellent poetry, but you are also exposing them to a rich culture. This poetry book contains such a wide variety of poems, with some alliteration, repetition, and different rhyme schemes. I cannot wait to share this with my students, and I would highly recommend it for any teacher looking to discuss the strong connection between culture and poetry.
The one thing that stuck out to me in this book is the fact that the poems in the text are in both the language of English and Spanish. This is a huge deal when it comes to the classroom and how students may feel left out when they are not to good at speaking English but they love to speak and read Spanish. This text can be used to show my students that is okay to know more then one language and that some books come in a variety of languages. The poems in this book are basically a detail of things from how the children play in their neighborhoods all the way to Mexican weddings.
An amazing book that combines poetry and the Mexican culture. Students will be exposed to the Mexican culture, in which they will learn new traditions for example that they didn't know before. The book is bilingual, English and Spanish, great for Spanish speaking students.
This lovely collection presents 18 poems in both English and Spanish by author Tony Johnston, with cool colored illustrations done (I think in colored pencil) by F. John Sierra. "A NCSS Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies", according to the back cover.
This book would be a great book to look at poetry during a writers workshop about poetry. This book is in Spanish and English which would be a great tool to use with spanish speaking students.
The book My Mexico awesome collection of poems. Children can learn about Mexican culture from these poems. This book English and Spanish language can use in the Bilingual classroom.
