Three years after his wife's death, Marcus reluctantly returns to the shark tank world of dating. The evening has exceeded all expectations: interesting conversation with an attractive woman, excellent food and first-rate wine. Life is good again.
What Marcus doesn't know is that his nanny has just abducted his eleven-year-old daughter--to Russia.
Marcus' live-in nanny is his ex-sister-in-law, a survivor of war crimes in her homeland Chechnya. Soon, Kamila's lingering trauma and desire for revenge will drive her along a path of deceit that threatens to shred the fabric of her family.
Marcus and his long-time friend and newfound romantic interest, Stormy, pursue Kamila to Moscow, across the Russian countryside, and eventually into the heart of rebel territory controlled by Kamila's father. Standing between Marcus and Alyssa are corrupt embassy staff, Chechen rebel fighters, and the Russian Army.
Will Marcus and Stormy find Alyssa before Kamila gives in to her darkest thoughts? What drives Kamila's deep-seated hatred of Marcus? If you enjoy suspense-filled psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the last page, you'll love Dark Sky Falling.

UPDATE: The re-edited books one and two are available! If you’ve already read books one and two, there is no need to re-read them. Even better news...book three of the Brandon Mattson series (Silent Fool) is now on sale! Go to richardryker.com for more information or search for R.L. Ryker on Amazon.
There is one big change for all of my books: New titles and book covers. That means re-publishing everything on Amazon (meaning this author page has been moved to the R.L. Ryker page). I have made it clear which books have been renamed in the book blurbs and in the books—that way no one buys a novel they’ve already read. Per Amazon policy, any reviews for the books found on this page should be left with those books (e.g. Dark Sky Falling, Dead by Sunrise, etc.), not with the new ones.
Why republish? Unfortunately, Amazon and Goodreads make it very difficult to make changes to books or even delete books (e.g. under old titles) once they come out on paperback. I’ll spare you the details, but if you have questions email me at author@richardryker.com. I appreciate hearing from you all!
I am excited about these changes, especially the new book covers. Most of all, I hope you’ll enjoy the twists and turns you’ll find in Silent Fool.
Learning about Chechnya and why there is tension between them and the Russians was just an added bonus. The book was fast-paced and thrilling and definitely worth a day's worth of reading. I will look forward to more books by this author.
This is a roller coaster ride through Russia and Ukraine. I doubt if you will be able to hold your breath for long enough as this panicked dad looks for his 11 year old daughter, across terrain that is hard to scope. Darkness and destruction lurk around every corner as he fights his way through crooked CEO's, untrustworthy guides and enemy soldiers wherever he turns. Is there anybody he can trust? And if he can trust them, will they even survive, themselves? This is a great story well told, with vivid descriptions and unexpected twists at nearly every page. I like Rykers style of writing as he describes the environment, which captures your imagination clearly, you might even feel the stray bullets whiz by as you try to find where the next enemy might be coming from. A good, 'Die hard' fans story which I think, would make a great movie. Character and story development is also a strong point for Ryker; there where characters I loved and others I despised. The kidnapper was unpredictable and pretty vicious (for a woman), but then when your mind has been messed up with certain enhancement drugs and a tragic upbringing, you can still relate to the why... only the why, has been taken to the extreme. I listened to the audio book version of this and for the most part, the narrators interpretation was excellent, the only thing that bothered me about it was that his narration was peaked, too often and for too long. It was a constant aggressive read, which had many places it could have been 'softened' in. I think this would have improved the flow of the story better.

4.9/5
This story was incredible! I had the hardest time putting this down. Right from the beginning, we are thrown into a high-tension situation, and the action continues throughout the story. Even when the story goes into a lull, we get much needed backstory and character development from multiple characters (not just the MC). The premise of the story is powerful; having your daughter go missing hits hard and the twists and turns throughout keep you engaged wanting more. I would HIGHLY recommend this to just about anyone; especially suspense/thriller lovers. A+ read.
I loved the fast pace. A lot of authors fill novels with words just to keep that 100K quota but I felt like Richard gave the reader just what they needed. No wasted time on getting out of building A, down to parking lot B and into car C. Would definitely read more of his work
Marcus daughter is taken , and a nightmare for any parent has begin. With his girlfriend Stormy they pursue, thinking she maybe in Russia. Who took her was it his late wife sister, wanting her as a reminder of her sister. It is tense and emotion filled. The narration was good bringing this out, Given audio for my voluntary review and my voluntary review
To know a families sense of love is understated in this book. A great read! Unimaginable to think this could really happen. Keeps u on your toes and you don't even realize your at the end of the book.
Alyssa has been kidnapped by her aunt, Marcus' nanny is his ex-sister-in-law Kamila , a survivor of war crimes in her homeland Chechnya. She is mental and took Alyssa to Checknya and Marcus and a lawyer Stormy fly there to find his daughter....GREAT BOOK
I inhaled this book as a passenger riding from Massachusetts to Virginia. Many traffic snarls kept the driver frustrated, but i read from beginning to end, oblivious of the unending lines of cars. Exciting, with unpredictable twists and a surprising ending.
After the death of his wife Marcus finally decides to move forward with his life and start dating. Being a single father isn't easy sometimes. Kamila, Marcus's sister-in-law, is his live in nanny. She's beginning to act strange therefore Marcus has to make a decision concerning the safety of his daughter. Arriving home late one night he discovers Kamila has taken Alyssa and fled back to Russia. Marcus and Stormy start their journey to Russia to find his daughter and Kamila. Obstacles are thrown in their path putting them in the hand of several different militant groups and endangering their lives. Action packed drama and suspense that will keep you gripped to the pages til the very end!
The only likable characters in this psychological thriller are Alyssa, and to a lesser degree, Stormy. Marcus is too hot-headed and Kamila's motives don't make a bit of sense. But the biggest Problem I have with this story is the inconsistent treatment of the language barrier. At one point, the language barrier prevents them from communicating, yet later, they're carrying on a conversation in the foreign language. The story is far too contrived to be believable.
Neal Arango's performance is satisfactory, although the slight echo in the studio makes the production seem a little unprofessional. He does give distinctive voices to the characters.
