Chesterton—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.
On 8 June 1870, Dickens suffered another stroke at his home after a full day's work on Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness, and the next day he died at Gad's Hill Place. Contrary to his wish to be buried at Rochester Cathedral "in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the time of the funeral reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world." His last words were: "On the ground", in response to his sister-in-law Georgina's request that he lie down.

Οι Μεγάλες Προσδοκίες του Ντίκενς ήταν ένα έργο που ήθελα να διαβάσω από την παιδική μου ηλικία ύστερα από τον ρόλο που έπαιξε στο αγαπημένο μου παιδικό βιβλίο μυστηρίου "Το μυστικό του παλιού αρχοντικού". Με είχε μαγέψει η ιστορία του Πιπ και της Μις Χάβισαμ και το μυστήριο και η γοτθική μαγεία που ενέπνεε.
Επιτέλους ήρθε η ώρα και ο δεκάχρονος εαυτός μου δικαιώθηκε.
Μου άρεσε αυτό το βιβλίο, ο λόγος του Ντίκενς είναι αναμφίβολα αριστουργηματικός και εμβληματικός. Η πλοκή είναι ενδιαφέρουσα, δεν προχωρά απελπιστικά αργά ούτε πολύ γρήγορα, βρίσκεται κάπου στην μέση, αν και τα μικρά κεφάλαια σου δίνουν την αίσθηση ότι προχωρά γρηγορότερα απ' όσο φαίνεται.
Με κούρασε λιγάκι κάπου στην μέση, αλλά ο Ντίκενς το έσωσε λίγο πιο μετά και με έκανε να το ρουφήξω με τόση απορρόφηση με όση διάβαζα στην αρχή.
Θα ήθελα να έπαιρνε η σχέση του Πιπ και της Μις Χάβισαμ περισσότερο χρόνο, και αυτό προσδοκούσα (see what i did there?) καθώς αυτή με τράβηξε εξ' αρχής στο βιβλίο.
Προς το παρόν δεν έχω πολύ όρεξη να διαβάσω τον δεύτερο τόμο, ίσως το κάνω κάποια στιγμή στο μέλλον...
Παρ' όλα αυτά ήταν μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ανάγνωση και αν μη τι άλλο η γνωριμία μου με τον Ντίκενς!

Päätinpä että kuuntelen nyt klassikkokirjan, joskus aikoja sitten olen Dickensiä koittanut kirjana lukea mutta kesken jäi. Aikamoista jaaritteluahan tämä on, kerronta sujuvaa ja miellyttävää kumminkin. Ei kyllä tulis kovakantisena luettua vieläkään mutta äänikirjana ihan ok. On kyllä hieno taito kirjoittaa niin ajatonta kerrontaa että ajan kuluminen julkaisuajankohdasta ei vaikuta.

Poner esta novela en su justo valor no es tarea fácil. Dickens extiende toda su maestría a lo largo de la obra : la descripción del marjal y suburbios de Londres, del entorno del chico protagonista, Pip, la herrería,las costumbres y usos de la Inglaterra victoriana.
Y sus personajes, modelados por el patrón social de su época, a veces de forma grotesca y barroca : la rica y esquizofrénica Lady Havisham, muñeca rota digna representante del universo Carroll o de la iconografía de la artista británica Kate Bush; el engolado señor Pumblechook y el halcón de la City,el eficaz abogado Jaggers; los pillos, convictos ,buscavidas....
Por otra parte, los dechados de bondad y rectitud: el hombre sencillo de la herrería,Joe Gargery; el fiel amigo, Herbert o la angelical Biddy.
En este mundo el autor mueve al huérfano de esta novela,Pip,por un camino que Dickens acostumbra a recorrer en algunas de sus historias, que lleva de la más solemne de las miserias al éxito material y personal. Es un claro precedente del "sueño americano", gestado en una sociedad industrial y competitiva.
No voy a descubrir al posible lector si Pip llega o no a lo más alto, pero sí comentaré que el genial escritor se queda un poco a medias: el relato es excesivo, a veces resulta un río demasiado recreado en sus meandros (aunque Dickens es un maestro creando ambientes , personajes y universos paralelos) y determinados personajes y tramas pudieran sobrar, pueden resultar pesados.
Hay que tener en cuenta que Grandes Esperanzas apareció durante años como relato por capítulos en un periódico londinense.
Y para terminar, el final, aunque verosímil,no termina de convencer.
En resumen, a mi modo de ver, no es la mejor de las novelas de Dickens, pero permite disfrutar de todo su universo de figuras y ambientes.

Je n'avais jamais lu Dickens, et j'avoue que j'ai un peu de mal avec ce premier tome (peut-être aussi à cause d'un problème de traduction). Le début est assez intriguant et, comme Pip par la suite, on ressent la pauvre condition et la "grossièreté" de son entourage. Le tout est mené de manière rocambolesque par l'auteur, depuis Miss Havisham en passant par Estrella sans oublier le bon Joe.
Joe est du reste sans doute mon personnage favori.Il est certes peu éduqué, mais il est vraiment bon et souhaite réellement le mieux pour Pip (quitte à y renoncer pour lui permettre d'avancer dans la vie)
Sur les aventures de Pip, j'avoue avoir également eu un peu de mal avec la loufoquerie de ses aventures londoniennes et de sa pension. Par ailleurs, j'ignore toujours qui est son bienfaiteur (je ne suis pas persuadée que ce soit Miss Havisham). Au final, j'espère plus apprécié le tome 2
Ce que j'aime : le personnage de Joe, la terrible soeur de Pip, Estrella
Ce que j'aime moins : un peu trop "loufoque "pour moi, le personnage de Pip que je trouve faible et auquel j'ai du mal à m'attacher
En bref : Un premier tome qui campe l'intrigue et qui nous permet de découvrir Pip

Ναι είναι Ντικενς. Ναι είναι απ τα αριστουργηματα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας. Αλλά δεν βγαίνει. Ίσως φταίει η μετάφραση η οποία ώρες ώρες γίνεται λίγο κουραστική, ίσως να είναι έτσι και το αυθεντικό. Αλλά πραγματικά είναι ζόρι να διαβαστεί.

위대한 유산은 빅토리아 시대가 배경이고 또한 저자 '찰스 디킨'이 주인공 핍에 자신의 인생, 자신이 어렸을때의 배경화면을 추가해 '찰스 디킨'이 어떻게 자신을 주인공에 비유했는지 알아가며 보는 재미가 있었다.
찰스 디킨은 이 책[위대한 유산]을 통해 그 당시 사회상을 비판적으로 드러내는 동시에 시대가 흘러도 결국 사람이 가지고 있는 '욕망'과 '사랑' 은 변하지 않는다는것을 완벽하게 재현해 냈다.

Παρόλο που είχα να το διαβάσω άπειρα χρόνια και είναι τεράστιο βιβλίο, θυμόμουν τα περισσότερα σκηνικά. Με είχε εντυπωσιάσει λογικά. Από πολλούς θεωρείται το magnum opus του Dickens και όχι άδικα μάλλον. Επίσης, θα ήθελα να αναφερθώ και σε ένα παλιό επεισόδιο του South Park, το οποίο ήταν ένα παρανοϊκό spoof αυτού του έργου. Οι παλιοί θα θυμάστε ότι η συγκεκριμένη καφροσειρά είχε έναν χαρακτήρα που λεγόταν Πιπ και ήταν εμπνευσμένος από τον πρωταγωνιστή του μυθιστορήματος αυτού.

Yet another novel by Dickens I haven't read in ages and it brings back so many memories. Definitely my favourite (at least from the ones I've read of course). All the author's usual tropes are blended beautifully in this one.
