In this collection of ten short stories, a cast of fun-loving kids, including Betsy, Billy, Anna Patricia, Eddie, Babs, Teddy, Peter, and a pair of twins, greet the pleasures of summertime with enthusiasm and delight
Carolyn Haywood was an American writer and illustrator of children’s books, best known for her beloved “Eddie” and “Betsy” series, which captured everyday childhood with warmth and authenticity. Raised in a supportive, middle-class Philadelphia family, she developed her artistic talents early, studying art and later working as a teacher, an experience that inspired her to write for young readers. After formal training in fine arts and travel in Europe, she worked on murals before turning fully to books. Her debut, “B” is for Betsy, appeared in 1939, launching a prolific career built on close observation of children’s lives and feelings, continuing for decades.
Some of Haywood's older books, though dated, are worth reading. This stitch-up, not so much. A random very short book from my library, read for "summer theme." I was not impressed. These stories and chapters feel dated, are rather moralistic, and include references to "Indians" and to Christopher Columbus in a way that praises him. Even worse, they're just not interesting, imo.
A quaint collection of summer themed chapters from Haywood's various book series. I'm definitely going to be recommending this as summer reading for younger readers!! Would even be great as a family summer time read aloud. 🌻
The kids in this book had a much better summer than I ever had. My favorite story in this book was the last one, End of Summer. When you're under a deadline crunch and stressed out, it's easy to run around like a chicken without its head.
