After Micha Perkins finds himself wrongly implicated in a crime, the last person he wants coming to his rescue is his secret crush Swift; his older brother’s best friend. But when Micha returns to the town that never felt like home, he discovers Swift’s young daughter is in trouble as well. If Micha can help them both in any way, he knows he will.
Self-defense coach Swift Coal never realized he was a father until he gets custody of five-year-old Imogen and her cranky cat. His neat and tidy life is about to come crashing down, but to his surprise, Micha Perkins is there to save the day. He’s so damn good with kids, and just as cute as Swift remembers. When Micha moves in to help look after Imogen, Swift struggles to repress the feelings he’s kept hidden.
Micha’s always been a misfit and Swift’s life was always orderly. Micha may have taken the fall to protect those more vulnerable than him, but who will save him when his past comes back to haunt him? Was Swift a fool to risk the safety of his daughter around a bad element like Micha? When their chaotic worlds collide, perhaps love and family are the middle ground they both need to become stronger together.
Homeward Bound is a steamy, standalone MM romance novel with a guaranteed HEA and absolutely no cliffhanger.
HJ Welch is a British author of contemporary American MM small town series and books in multi authored shared universes, including the international number one bestselling Homecoming Hearts. She lives just outside of London with her husband and three balls of fluff that occasionally pretend to be cats.
She began writing at an early age, later honing her craft online in the world of fanfiction on sites like Wattpad. Fifteen years and over half a million words later, she sought out original MM novels to read. By the end of 2016 she had written her first book of her own, and in 2017 she achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a full-time author.
When she’s not writing she’s usually dancing, singing, filming music videos, taking long walks, working on jigsaw puzzles, drinking prosecco, or talking about Eurovision.
She also writes contemporary British MM fairy tale adaptation as Helen Juliet, including bestsellers Thorn in His Side, A Right Royal Affair, and Three.
This is the story of Micha and Swift. I love H J Welch. Her writing style just draws you into the lives of her characters and the beautiful town where they lived. I adored that we could read about previous characters again. This story is funny and emotional and beautiful. The characters are amazing. I loved the storyline. Great great read.
This was 80% Micha crying and 20% cute. Swift was the one saving this book for me. He was a rock and deserves a gold medal for dealing with Micha and all his baggage. Loved the ending but I was seriously struggling to get there.

This is a low 4 star. I really enjoyed most of it, I liked the characters a lot. I enjoyed their romance and journey to coupledom. It went at a great speed, and I liked them reckoning with their personal demons to get their happy ending. I enjoyed that much more than when the outside drama started interloping. That's where the story lost me a bit. It was just cartoony and generic. But I enjoyed the family dynamic, though it was A LOT of characters and relationships thrown at someone who hasn't read the previous books in the series. So my bad. But yeah, the good outweighed the bad. I would definitely read more in this series.
I'm at the point where I just think H.J. Welch isnt for me. I got to about 65% and just started slimming because I was over this book. The plots bones were okay, nothing spectacular. But the characters and how they interacted with that plot were pretty bad.
To start, I never understood Micha's whole deal. I guess I just don't see how the adopted son of gay dad's can feel like he can't be his gay self at home, even with his background. There was no good reason for Micha feeling the way he does about his family knowing he was gay. And "I’d never tell them what a horrible, selfish hypocrite I was" was an exceptionally shitty reason, if a unique one. Because now you can add horrible coward, dumbass, and asshole to that list. He doesn't want to tell his gay parents he's gay because he was a shitty teenager and feels embarrassed about it. Just wow.
Not only that, Micha was exhausting to read. He's so negative and launches into an anxiety fit at the slightest provocation. This boy needed a metric fuck ton of therapy, but instead he got Swift's Magic Dick™ which solved all his mental health needs! The "I'm not wooorrrrttttthhhyyyy" bullshit was tired, at least that stopped eventually (if not unbelievably. Like I said, boy needed a lot of therapy).
Micha being a drama queen was not fun to read for me and it got annoying.
Swift was fine, even if his name is dumb. But the plot was only slightly more boring than he was.
This book takes place in some sort of fantasy land where the bad guys are charicatures, and nothing requires our characters to really struggle for something. All the struggle in this book for Micha and Swift is just skin deep. There are no real obstacles need to be overcome through any sort of character development or action. These characters are so passive. Things mostly just happen to them with no effort on their parts.(SPOILERS AHEAD) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Amy voluntarily moves across the state, Micha's severe anxiety and depression is magically fixed by Swift's dick, Dale is conveniently locked up after the most anticlimactic capture ever and Brie escapes culpability, Micha someone ends up serving 2 months for burglary. I mean it keeps going. Everything is solved so quickly and no one really has to work for anything. Things just kind of happen to our characters, they don't drive the plot the plot drives them.
Adding to the fantasy land feel is the veritable LGBT Utopia that was these rainbow families where the author has shoehorned every fucking label under the sun into one fucking family I mean Jesus have a little reality won't you. Trans, Bi, Gay, Lesbian, Non-Binary. What is the point? It feels so tacked on and like you're trying to shove more labels into your book for the sake of them being there to make people say "oh look! How woke of the author to include this rando side trans character that has 0 lines and 0 bearing on the plot!" and I just don't understand it. That isn't representation. But I digress. This isn't why my rating is so low. Just an observation.
I can't anymore. Time of death 25%. I find Imogen an unrealistic cliché and Micah very, very stupid. After tolerating some MM novels doing the same, I now have had it with the trope "Wow, nice guy. Must be straight. Let's whine for 75% of the book about me not having a shot." And I don't remember the ending but Micah being stupid already makes me annoyed by assuming he wil accept a criminal proposal from his previous friends. Once I gave it 3 stars, but after years of reading MM I now give it 1 star.
this was a very good addition to this series. I really liked Swift and Micha and I liked that Swift did not hesitate to come out for Micha. Micha has some psychological problems and I think in the end, he would need therapy. it would have been nice if that point would have been a bit more realistic because seriously I don't think anyone can overcome this kind of thinking without serious help and it is wrong to portray it as if it would be possible.
but all in all it was a very nice story and I liked it
4.5 stars. I’m enjoying making my way through this series. I love the side characters and the small town feel! I wouldn’t say these have to be read in order but always fun to do so!
I really liked both Micah and Swift as characters! I loved how Swift stepped up with his daughter and how good Micah was with her. Not sure it was completely realistic with how easy she seemed to adjust but it’s fiction so all good!
I loved that there was some danger again and that everything ended up ok in the end! Their HEA was sweet and I look forward to reading more in the series! I listened to the audio and the narrator was great!
I love books with kids...especially kids as snarky as Imogen. Butter I think is the best animal ever in a book and I'm not a cat person.
Micah was written and portrayed in a the most perfect way. His struggles both from a mental and physical perspective are dealt with fabulously. You can't help but feel something for him.
Swift wasn't the most complicated character but I can completely understand his thoughts in regards to his sexuality and how he has dealt with all the aftermath of finding out he has a 5 year old daughter.
I can't wait for more from Pine Cove so get writing Miss Welch ;)
Talk about "rose colored glasses"! What kind of LGBTQ+ utopia is this?
Poor little gay boy got hit with a slipper by a foster parent before he was adopted by gay dads and was scarred for life so he won't let himself be gay at home. Instead he ran away, whored himself for a place to live, then got picked up for criminal actions... but all of that gets swept under the rug because he's home now and really great with children.
Also, every time Swift call Imogen "Little Bit" I heard "Little Bitch" and it threw me off.
Sometimes we feel like we don’t belong. Sometimes we feel like “we” are not enough or that we don’t measure up to expectations. Or sometimes, we just feel inadequate, according to ourselves. But our family refuses to make us feel that way, they continue to believe in us, even if we fucked up real bad. All we can do is just have to start to believe in ourselves too. This is how Micha feels about himself, that he is not worth all the love and understanding that his family and Swift give to him.
Swift has had the surprise of his life when he learns that he has a daughter. It threw him for a loop. He practically do not know anything about raising a child. But most importantly he feels guilty that he didn’t know that Imogen exists, though not through his own fault. Now, he has to rearrange his life to give priority to the most important individual in his life.
How can these men navigate all these new events in their lives? Will Micha finally feel that he is worthy of all the love his family gives him? Will Swift finally accept that it was not his fault that he did not know about Imogen and just become the best father that he could be.
HJ Welch has woven a very nice tale of these two people and eventually their acceptance of their love for each other. I love how their story was written in detail, and the supporting characters were loving, supporting and totally accepting. The story is well written and you will feel what each character is going through in each chapter. Congratulations! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Poor Micha. All he ever wanted to do was fit in, and it just didn't feel like he did at home, so he ran away. But now he's had to run away back home. And then there's Swift. Beautiful Swift, who just got a daughter he didn't know that he had, and who needs help, which Micha can do.
I really felt for Micha. It's hard to feel like the odd man out, even if you are in a loving family. You can still feel you just don't fit in, and his history didn't make it any easier.
Swift was a really good guy who was just trying to do what he could as a parent, but becoming a parent of a 5 year old all of sudden isn't easy.
This was awesome. I've been loving the Pine Cove series but seeing the sweet Swift find his HEA was great. After getting surprised with a kid he didn't know about, he jumps right into being an amazing father. Micha is home after years of being away. He's had a difficult early childhood with trust issues and a lack of belief that he deserves good things happening to him. It was great to see Micha learn to love himself and accept the love that everyone around him wants to give.
Not only was the story great, the narration was fantastic! I loved listening to this.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by the author
This was the most heart achingly beautiful story. It teaches you about second chances and hope and love and most of all about how family doesn’t need to be people who have the same blood running through their veins and that family are people who are born in your heart. This story moved me in so many ways. It was so so gorgeous. Micah who had a hard start in life, and kept inviting bad things into his life because he felt he was not worthy of happiness. Micah who punished himself for what he did as a child as a result of the abuse he went through. Micah who pushed his loving family away time and time again because of guilt and because he felt he was not good enough. Beautiful Micah who was oblivious of how talented and gifted he was, how kind and loving he was. Micah who didn’t realise that he had so much to offer to the world. that Micah completely captured my heart. Swift, lovely kindhearted Swift. He’s big and manly and handsome but totally adorkable. He’s kind and always thinks the best about people. Him as a fumbling persevering daddy to Imogen and a constant support to Micah, just made me fall in love with his character. Imogen is such a smart, sweet and brave girl. I love how quickly she gets accustomed to her new life and her daddy and uncle Micah. I love how attached he gets to both of them and considers them a unit. Omg that picture that she draws of her and her daddy and mommy and her uncle Micah and Butter is the most precious thing ever. I love how creative she is with her games and how wild her imagination is. I love that Micah is the one that Swift first calls when Imogen is having her first tantrum. The way Micah handles it is fantastic. I love how completely mesmerised by Micah and his skills Swift is. I love when he goes on to invite him to stay with them. The chemistry between them was so palpable the constant touching and blushing and giggling. And it was so funny that they were both oblivious of how the other felt about them. How they both assumed the other was straight. During the party at Swifts house, Swift did not budge from Micah’s side the entire time. Also they were so obvious about their feelings for each other. Emerey luckily got through to Swift to admit his feelings. Good thing too because Micah was all ready to leave. OMG Micahs internal homophobia from the past and his abusive childhood and what he had to go through in his life just broke my heart. I love how supportive Swift was. How understanding and how furious he was on his behalf. Swift was just so awesome. Treated him with kindness, love and respect. I love how they decided to take it slow. How Swift understood Micah’s strange behaviour without judgement like when he got up from bed and went back to sleep on the couch. How he gave him space and time. It was really beautiful. With the Dale incident I was so proud of Swift when he told Micah they would handle it together. Get through it together and that he wouldn’t even have to go through that alone. When Dale threatened Imogen and Brie, Micah was willing to throw away his whole life just to save the people he loved. Omg that talk with his pops n then his dad were his dad spoke about the runt dogs!! I had goose flesh. I’m so glad it helped him make the right decision to pull out of the plan to rob the diner.. omg but if Swift has not come? It would have all gone south.. Imogen’s sadness n frustration at her uncle micahs absence was so heart breaking.. so i was so happy that Micah could be reunited with her. I loved that Amy accepted Micah as co-parent and as part of the family. She seemed really awesome. It’s amazing that they got joint custody. Omg that huge cake with Imogen asking Micah to be her daddy brought tears to my eyes. It was so beautiful. The proposal was just so perfect in front of all their family and friends. I love that they got their happily ever after. Because no one deserves it more than Micah and Swift and Imogen! I have tears in my eyes. It’s so beautiful.

"Homeward Bound" is the third volume of "Pine Cove" series written by HJ Welch and I have the impression that if we focus on the content we would be able to see that it's the most serious of them. The story that the author tells us in this novel is really deep and definitely moves the reader, forcing them to think the subject over. One of the mentioned topics that are presented here is self-acceptance. The author in a really good way shows us how much childhood dramas caused by psychic violence affects the adult life and one's self-esteem. Using Micha as an example, she shows us the real consequences of leaving in a toxic environment and the hardships of leaving a normal life later on, of rejecting prejudices concerning oneself and seeing oneself objectively. This topic really impresses the reader and touches them deeply.
Another very important topic which is the essence of this novel is a family. In "Homeward Bound" HJ Welch presents many different faces and types of it – from unconventional to traditional one; from good and loving, through good one which faces some problems, to bad and dysfunctional; from loving to cruel; from biological to adoptive one. However, to me the most important thing is that the author very clearly emphasizes the fact that love is an essential part of family life, regardless of its members' blood ties, gender or physical condition, and absolute, unlimited acceptance. I would also add that the author shows the true value and strength of the family in such a beautiful and moving way that the reader immediately falls in love with this aspect of this novel.
The undoubted advantage of "Homeward Bound" are also the characters. The author created two truly wonderful men who share many virtues like, for example, great, loving heart, gentleness, loyalty and devotion. Believe me, when we start reading this novel and we are already totally in love with them. What's more, the way HJ Welch presents Micha and Swift, by showing us their present life and also the past that influenced it, not only makes us really interested in them but also moves us deeply. While reading this book our hearts often shatter to pieces, and our eyes well with tears. On the other hand, there are also scenes reading which we feel great joy and we smile. The novel binds our emotions with itself and really affects us deeply.
I would also like to write a few words about Micha and Swift's relations. Well, its quite obvious that their friendship, and later also their relationship, is characterized by incredible sweetness that the reader can't resist. However, that's not all, because the author managed to show the chemistry between the two and the dynamics of their relations in a really wonderful way. Thanks to all this, when reading the novel, we really become addicted to it and feel every word and event with our whole being. "Homeward Bound" is not a book you read and then forget about it. We really remember the story told in this novel and it stays with us for a very long time. What's more, it conquers our hearts to the extent that after reading it we are immediately certain that we will come back to this story more than once. In short, the manner in which the author shows Swift and Micha's relationship is simply brilliant.
To sum up, "Homeward Bound" is a really well written, extremely interesting and wise novel about self-acceptance, family, love and healing wounds. I really recommend you this book with all my heart, because it is one hundred percent worth reading.
______________________
To naprawdę robi na czytelniku wrażenie i dogłębnie go dotyka.
Krótko mówiąc, to, w jaki sposób autorka ukazuje relacje Swifta i Michy to prawdziwe mistrzostwo.
Podsumowując, „Homeward Bound” to naprawdę świetnie napisana, niesamowicie interesująca i mądra powieść o samoakceptacji, rodzinie, miłości oraz leczeniu ran. Naprawdę polecam Wam tę książkę z całego serca, ponieważ jest warta przeczytania w stu procentach.
I'm really enjoying this series of audios with narration by Nick J. Russo, which makes them outstanding.
In this installment, Michael comes home to Pine Cove after 7 years away that included six months jail time after he was talked into driving a friend somewhere and the friend robbed the place. Micha is the youngest of the kids adopted by the diner's owners (appeared in previous books) and feels very out of place, even before his recent incarceration.
Swift Coal, oldest of the Coal brothers who appeared in previous books suddenly learns he has a daughter when C&Y contact him to take custody while her mom is in rehab. If it wasn't for his bestie's brother Misha, Swift would be lost but Micha has a way with kids and comes to the rescue.
And from there the story unfolds, including Swift's discovery that he's bisexual and Micha's turmoil over his past, worry about the future, and then a revisit from his ex who got him in trouble in the first place.
I enjoyed Micha more than many characters I've read in similar situations. Partly no doubt because he was written so well but partly due to Nick J. Russo's narration. For both characters, and for the secondaries, and even Swift's little girl, the emotions were realistic and well expressed. His performance made the story resonate with me.
I'm definitely moving on in the series. Can't wait to see what happens next in Pine Cove.

Review: The author opens up the inner world of both heroes in an evocative way. She shows their insecurities, their strengths and how when you open yourself to those around you more often than not you can find your way home. The biggest downside to the story for me is that I would have liked to be shown more in regards to Micha's healing with his family and Swift's reunion with Amy. We are given glimpses, but it seemed incomplete. The story is solid and the pacing is very good.

I absolutely love an MM series in any format as long as it has story & character building. This story was well thought out & executed 😍This story had all the feels 😍 I loved seeing Swift take charge & make a family with Micha & Imogen & of course Butter. Seeing Micha grow & overcome his past was amazing 👏🏾 Thank you, H.J Welch💐 ,Narrator Nick.J Russo brilliant performance as always. I'd give this a solid 3. I liked it, it was entertaining, but I didn't love it. It was funny at times, sweet at times, surprisingly sexy at times, (Bedroom Swift is HAWT), and suspenseful too. Swift's a great guy, all around darn near perfect. Micha is quite flawed, the king of self doubt and questionable decisions. He has reasons - they're not always the best or most logical, but they're reasons. (At one point, if I'd been reading a paperback rather than listening to it, I would've thrown it across the room. At the risk of any kind of spoiler, Micha regained a bit of sense & I was able to refrain from more internal yelling at him.) Swift's ex, Amy, was also not a great decision maker either, so maybe that's his type. The timeline was a tad confusing and unrealistic to me. Swift, Micha & Imogen just got way too close & accomplished too much over what felt like too short of a time. I think if the main part of the story prior to the epilogue had taken place over a longer period of time, I would've enjoyed it more. But again, it wasn't terrible, just a personal preference. The narration was good & in keeping with the rest of the series. I've already begun the next book.
This is a brother’s best friend to more romance, featuring Micah and Swift, and is book three in the Pine Cove series.
Micha returns to Pine Cove after he got in trouble with the law in Seattle. Micha always had a crush on his brother’s best friend, Swift, and when he runs into him Micha discovers Swift is a single dad and has a child.
This book is a slow burn. Micha has been hurt in the past but Swift is there to comfort him. Their chemistry has a deep connection from the start and it is so gentle and sweet. There is some drama with Micha’s old life but it sorts itself out by the end.
The narration in this series is so good. I already loved Nick J Russo and I’m thoroughly enjoying listening to him non-stop.
Onto book four. Woo hoo!
Things to expect in this MM romance are: 3rd book in series Brother’s best friend Suddenly a single dad Size difference Roommates Close proximity Slow burn Hurt/Comfort Calls him sweetheart Double coming out Supportive families Bit of angst/drama Sweet HEA
After my lack of enthusiasm for Book 2, I can honestly say this story had me from the get-go. Certainly my favorite in the series so far. Swift & Mischa’s relationship felt organic and very real to me. Micha’s history is heartbreaking and Swift’s self-acceptance at being bi rang true. Imogen was adorable and being a cat lover, even Butter held a place in my heart. The best thing going about this story was that the MCs actually communicated when something was wrong. (Micha’s dramatic departure not withstanding, but even then he tried to express himself on the way out.) Not gonna lie, I burst into UGLY happy tears when
This story is about a young man who returns home after being arrested. He reunites with his first crush, a friend of his brothers. If you don't mind a lot of angst, this was a sweet story about coming to terms with who you are and accepting yourself. There was a lot of angst in the form of the main character thinking he wasn't good enough and that he made mistakes all the time. This was difficult to get through as sometimes it seemed forced and/or exaggerated as there was no explanation for why he felt this way despite having a loving, caring family until halfway through the story. The timeline/ages of all the characters was also a little confusing as explanations were vague. Spice level at a 1.5 (subjective).
Homeward Bound is the third book in the Pine Cove series, a contemporary romance series set within a small town. Maybe this book could be read as a standalone, but I think it works best if it was read after the first two. There are a lot of secondary characters that are introduced in the first two books that make a presence in this book. Homeward Bound has one of my favorite tropes: found/made-family and unexpected-kid-acquisition. I really loved Swift – he was sweet, tender, and protective, but still had his flaws which he was open about. The development of the family dynamics and the delightful romance made this an enjoyable read.
This refers to the audiobook version. I really wanted to like this story, and I sort of did, but Micah was so annoying with his tunnel vision and blinkered view of his options. They were so tightly focussed on only one way forward that it became totally unbelievable. Yes I can see from his past that he was in a difficult situation, but unfortunately there were too many issues that started to feel contrived. Sorry, but I did like Swift and Micah together, and Imogen was such a fantastic character. So not sure if want to deal with the rest of the series. I will have to have a think about it before trying for any more.
Yes, please and thank you. This was a perfect balance of angst, adorableness, and romance. With Micha struggling to shake the shadow of abandonment and trauma from his early years in foster system, he returns to his adoptive parents and siblings in Pine Cove - repentant after being duped into aiding a robbery. Where he meets Swift again, his high school crush, who has had his own foundations shaken by discovering he is a father to a five-year-old girl and suddenly takes custody of her. Micha offers to help the new dad, which leads to a slow but sweet burn relationship.
The perfect book - when you need to know you are good enough & you deserve happiness!
Yep sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs or go through an obstacle coarse, some paths are not smooth. Through it all Micah has endured and preserved. Swift has heart of gold, with most of his life protector with his open & giving heart, so standing by and supporting is a natural. It looks both are about to face challenges that give them paths that will change their futures. Add I one gen and Butter (love him!) You habe a perfect combo MM Romance
Whilst the MCs and their families are new to the ensemble cast, there are enough of the earlier secondary characters for the reader to either view this as either part of the storyline or as a standalone novel.
Unfortunately for this reader, despite the excellent prose and a few zingers, the plot was always being strongly semaphored a page or two ahead, taking the joy of discoveing the narrative away, leaving only the choice of words to be discovered.
FYI: H J Welch is the author's long-established author's name. Helen Juliet is her newish "nom de plume," which she is using to experiment with different tropes and new story types. There is quite a bit of crossover between the two writing names. However, if she wished to write, for example, science fiction or horror stories, I understand that it would be under Helen Juliet rather than H J Welch.
Book three of the Pine cove series, Homeward Bound, was my favorite so far. I actually liked the characters and thought the storyline was alright. Micha gets in a spot of troubled with the law and ends up needing to return home. He reunites with his childhood friend and crush, Swift, and together they overcome Micha’s past as it attempts to catch up with him. Swift is strongly family oriented and has a child that Micha helps raise. The development between the two progresses nicely and the storyline never tired.
