In Luv Duet #1

Girl in Luv

Rate this book
Langley Vaughn is in desperate need of a date.

But not just any date.
She’s looking for a date to the wedding from hell. It isn’t every day you’re forced to be in the bridal party while your first love marries your arch nemesis… otherwise known as the world’s worst stepsister. The entire situation is a nightmare, and Langley is sick and tired of taking orders and forcing a fake smile. She’s done being the bad guy when she was the one who was wronged.

She needs to find a date who’s not afraid of her family’s money and someone who is willing to shake things up. She needs someone outside of her normal social circle, someone ready to go to war with the well-to-do. She needs someone who won’t back down. Someone willing to play the complicated game of tug of war she’s been engaged in with her family for years.

Never in a million years did she think she was going to stumble across her very own heroic heartthrob when she set her crazy plan in motion.

Not only does Iker show up for her time and time again, he also forced her to finally fight for herself.

He says he’s only there for the money… but his actions speak so much louder than his words.

Iker Alvarez would do anything and everything to get his hands on some quick cash.

Not just any cash, but enough to make sure his younger brother gets into the college of his dreams.

Thank goodness for a desperate, pretty little rich girl with too much money and her heart set on an outrageous scheme. Being in the right place at the right time might just be the answer to both of their prayers — and this smart soldier has never let a golden opportunity slide by.

Iker doesn’t mind coming to Langley’s rescue and being her plus-one… as long as the price is right.

Only, he didn’t plan on liking the blonde socialite as much as he does. He is totally unprepared for the pull he feels toward her, coupled with his growing desire to protect her from the vultures and villains living under the same roof.

He wants to be the guy who keeps her safe and gives her the courage to fight back that she obviously needs… But someone else, someone far more powerful and influential than Langley’s wealthy family, has dibs on Iker’s time and on his future. He knows he isn’t the guy Langley can count on in the long run, but damn if he doesn’t want to do everything in his power to be that man.

With the story, the characters, the pace, the cover. With everything!!!!’
I am still wondering how I missed this duet’s release!!! 😤
The trope might have been used plenty before, but this story had a plot originality that captivated me entirely, along with its amazing writing.
The cliffhanger at the end made my heart skip a few beats but thankfully Boy In Luv is waiting for me...

4.75 Estrellas!!

Well... how can I say how tight my heart is at the end of this first book? What a wonderful, emotional story these authors have written! I had planned to read something else, but how could I not immediately dive into the sequel? I'm going back...

random thoughts;

* it is short & easy read
* I can't believe he snapped her heels off, men don't do that
* some things were a bit stretched
* heroine is stinky rich but no worries she is not "like all the other rich spoiled bitches"
* overall enjoyed it just fine

YAY! this was very sweet and funny.

Langley Vaughn is in desperate need of a fake date for a wedding.
Iker Alvarez would do anything and everything to get his hands on some quick cash.

with less than 200 pages, I read it very quickly, and then I read the next one to see what would happen especially given the slight cliffhanger of an ending we were left with.

I love this one.
I loved both the Hero and heroine.
The Hero esp was amazing.
I loved the angst and bitchy comments between the heroine and her step sister and step mother.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
No sexual history other than her ex is marrying her step sister.
Cliffhanger ending. Duet.

“If you’re the one holding the pen, you’re the one in charge of how the story ends."

Iker and Langley meet by chance when she's looking for the perfect date to shock everyone at her step-sister's wedding. Her step-sister is marrying Langley's first love. She's also a self-centered bridezilla. Langley's stepmother is absolutely horrible as well. It is reminiscent of Cinderella's relationship with her stepmother and step-sisters except I think Langley's may be even worse.

Iker finds himself feeling protective of Langley almost instantly. When her family begins to harass and disrespect her, he is intolerant of it. Langley is so touched by it because she's really never had anyone stand up for her. Her father would but she hides their bad behavior from him since she doesn't want to ruin his happy relationship with his wife.

All is going well with Iker and Langley's "fake relationship" until they truly start to fall for each other. When emotions become involved, everything tends to get a little more out of control. Also, Iker's military commitment is always lurking in the periphery even though they don't discuss it.

I hopped right into book 2, Boy in Luv as soon as I finished this one.

The premise of this book was really interesting to me, however, the execution of it failed miserably.

All the characters felt unrealistically one dimensional. The villains of the story had no redeeming quality whatsoever, and every single person in that rich society had the exact same personality except for our main heroine.

Langley is supposedly looking for a "bad boy" that will shake the wedding and ruin it for her stepsister just by being there. Then she does everything she can to make Iker look as if he belonged there.
✔ His tattoos? covered by a $5,000 suit.
✔ His lack of manners? let's have a five-course meal where I teach you how to properly drink soup, and differentiate between a Salad fork and a dinner fork.

So, how in hell will Iker earn his whopping $10,000 payment? by JUST being there standing beside her and looking like the most handsome man to ever exist so that no one will be paying attention to the bride as they are too busy checking out Iker.

Iker puts Langley on the highest pedestal for the absolute bare minimum of human decency. He takes her to a laser tag game and volunteers the info of him not liking dark places and sudden light flashes due to his time in Afganistan, so she asks if he wants to go somewhere else instead. His internal monologue afterward was, and I quote:
“See, she was so damn sweet. And considerate. She barely knew me and she was worried about me. Worried about how I might react to something that might make me uncomfortable. No one, aside from my small family, had cared about my comfort and mental well-being in a long time.”

Nevermind that he's the one who chose the place and she expressed no interest in it from the start.

And I won't even start on the events of the laser tag game itself, cause I'm still in awe of the ridiculousness of what happened. I'm sorry, but could someone confirm the age of the authors? cause I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that no teenagers were consulted here.

This book ends with a cliffhanger, so I tried to pick up the next book and promptly DNF'ed it at the 29% mark as I don't hate myself enough to go through that torture.

Girl in Luv is the first book in the In Luv Duet by Jay Crownover and Rebecca Yarros. I've never really been a fan of the 'fake relationship' trope. However, after reading Girl In Luv, I think I can safely say this novella may have turned my views on this trope.

About Girl In Luv:

All Langley is looking for is a date to her upcoming stepsister's wedding. Her main criteria is basically someone that is outside the norm where her ritzy family is concerned. So when Iker Alvarez comes in with tattoos blazing and practically saves her life there is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. She's found her man.

Iker is home for a mere week. His only goal in mind is too find a way to make a decent amount of money in order to pay his younger brother's college tuition. He'll do anything it takes, even if it means making a deal with an angel and walking into the lion's den full of people wanting to take a bite out of her. Sometimes family is a bitch.

Langley and Iker come to a ten thousand dollar negotiation. Hell partake in all of Langely's evil stepsister's wedding festivities and she'll cough up ten thousand dollars by the end of the week. But Langley has more to lose by the end of the arrangement than money. She has her heart to lose.

My thoughts:

I was completely blindsided by Girl In Luv. I had no idea that this book revolved around a fake relationship. All I knew was I love Jay Crownover's writing and the few books I have read by Rebecca Yarros have been winners. I knew I couldn't pass up the chance to read this novel. Plus the cover art and the title really grabbed my attention. So I had to give it a chance.

I have to say, I was completely consumed by Langley and Iker's story. I loved Iker's protective nature when it came to Langley and her evil stepmother and stepsister. I loved the fact that he threw down all of what Langley's stepsister was offering and even went toe to toe with her stepmother. He's a very admirable character. Always protecting people at every turn. I loved the alpha male vibes that outshone all other moments. He's by far my favorite character in this duet.

I have to say, watching Langley break down her walls and become a stronger version of herself was another admirable trait. Nearly her whole life she spent protecting her father from the shell of the man he had become when her mother passed away. She did everything in her power to make sure he never went back to the depressed man he had become, even if that means being a doormat for her stepsister and stepmother to walk all over. But once Iker stepped into the picture he helped her become a stronger version of herself. I loved watching her give the attitude back for a change.

Overall, this was a great start to what I can imagine is going to be a great duet. I can't wait to see how this all wraps up in the end, especially given the slight cliffhanger of an ending we were left with. All I want is for Iker and Langley both to find their happily ever afters. Here's to hoping they find their way back....

I was so excited to get this book free. I mean seriously what a bonus, a free book just for pre-ordering the book I had literally waited 6 months to get my hands on. And it's written by two of my favourite authors. So obviously as soon as I got it I jumped right on in. I had no idea what it was about, how long it was, nothing except that it was a gift from two amazing authors.

And now that I have I want to scream and rant at both Rebecca and Jay for their cruelty. I was so invested in both characters that when I got to the end and realised there was a whole other book and that I am left not knowing what is going to happen next.

Iker was so freaking beautiful, inside and out. He was sweet and caring and compassionate yet all growly, possessive alpha and I love him so much. I am dying to see what happens next for him and hopefully meet his brother.

And OMG Langley was so beyond anything that I expected. When we first met her I thought she was going to be a Barbie doll, sorority princess. Then as we saw her come out of her shell and let Iker get to know the her under the pretty facade she presented to the world.

As a couple they were just amazing and I couldn't put it down from start to finish but the fact I have to wait for the conclusion is just pure torture. However as a marketing strategy it worked since I dropped my kindle and ran off to pre-order Justified, so now I have two books to hold my breath for. Well played ladies.

Rant time and not about this book. I loved this book 5 stars I couldn't wait for book two, stalked Amazon and Goodreads waiting for it and then this book and book two disappeared. I got really sad because I could not wait to see what happened with book two. So now I see book two YAY!!! but Goodreads has deleted my review?? Or its disappeared like many of my other reviews??? Who knows but this is irritating, once wouldn't be so bad but I can't tell you how may times this has happened with my reviews in the past. So I loved this book and I am beyond ecstatic that I finally get to read book two just sucks that my review is gone. On another side note, for a person who does the yearly challenge it gets frustrating knowing my read count is not accurate every year because books always disappear on my read list as well as the reviews.

When I started reading Girl In Luv, I was confused. What was this going to be about? Was I reading a RomCom? Was I reading a Romance? Well, it was a little bit of both. As we get to know Langley and Iker, you know that you are going to do nothing but fall in love with both of them.

Langley was privileged, beautiful and a doormat. She knows this. She can’t handle it anymore. It’s time she took her life into her hands and show her family that she’s finally not going to take it . She will do anything for her father, promised to play nice and not make waves … but, it’s not her making waves. Now, it’s time to put her plan in action to ruffle some feathers. She found the perfect man but is not looking forward to the wedding from hell. Iker is honorable, dependable and desperate. He’s taken care of his little brother his whole life and he’s not about to let him down. He has to find a way to get the money he needs to go to college. He never thought that the opportunity of a lifetime would walk into the dive bar he’s trying to drown his worries in. But, she did. Now, it’s time to go from the wrong side of the tracks to the right side and he’s in for one hell of a ride. He expected the week from hell, he didn’t expect the need to protect this beautiful blonde with the perfect smile from bridezilla, her ex-fiancee and her stepmother.

One thing leads to another and the connection Langley and Iker have just grows stronger. But, Iker knows he’s not the one for her. They are from different worlds and his commitment to the Military will keep them apart. No matter how much he wants it to be different. There is only one thing for him to do after the wedding … leave.

I usually don't like the hire a date trope in romance because, well, it almost always disappoints me and my eyes almost fall out of my head with all the rolling they do. But two of my favorite authors, Jay Crownover and Rebecca Yarros, using this trope, well I dove right in. I loved it! Now on to Boy in Luv to find out where they go from here.

I really liked Iker, and Langley was definitely sweet, but the way she let everyone walk all over her was frustrating and it just kept going. I know it was an intentional evil stepmother parallel but I just wanted her to tell them to beg off. I liked that Iker immediately clocked it and called it out, too. I did really like the direction her character took towards the end though!

Definitely an enjoyable romance read and I liked all the little Cinderella references. Will check out book two when I can!

4 ⭐'s

Langley's Dad has asked her to be in her (evil) stepsister's wedding and not only that but the groom just happens to be her first love. So, in order to appear as though she isn't pathetic, she strikes up a deal with a guy she meets in a bar, Iker.

Iker's been supporting his younger brother and grandmother so Langley's deal is a godsend when his brother's college scholarship falls through. He thinks this will be easy money, he just doesn't expect to fall for Langley.

And Langley is surprised by all her feelings for Iker as well. He's like nothing she's ever been around (rich girl/poor boy plot) and he brings out the best in her. She's able to stand her own through all the wedding fiascos.

Then, things become physical and that takes the relationship to a whole other level. However, there is something that Iker hasn't told Langley and it blows everything out of the water.

Be ready for book two, Boy in Luv.

Langley needed a date for her evil step-sister's wedding events but she couldn't use just anyone, no she had to find someone that would annoy the piss out her step-sister. So Langley visits an unsavory bar to hire someone and when her first target turns out to be a dud the one that saves her isn't. Iker is trying to take care of his family and when he overhears Langley's offer he takes up her cause. This is a fake dating story that turns into a self-worth and discovery story. I was emotionally connected by the end and I love that the military aspect of the story is handled with care and with accuracy thanks to Rebecca Yarros. I was happy that I received the second book at the same time so I didn't have to wait to find out what happened with Iker and Langley.

This specific video review will be included in the October 2019 wrap-up.

I feel like this was split up into two books just so they could call one of the books Girl in Luv and the other Boy in Luv because it was cute.

For me, it was cute, bringing into play the fake date trope, just not enough cute to warrant two books.

I enjoyed the first book a little more since it had more story and less sex. Essentially, I believe this would have been better as one book and at least two fewer sex scenes.

Girl in Luv is the latest release by Jay Crownover and new to me author Rebecca Yarros. It's basically a story about a girl Langley in desperate need of a date to a wedding from Hell and Iker a soldier who desperately needs money for his younger brother. I really enjoyed this story so much. Langley and Iker are total opposites but they work so well together. Langley is a doormat and she knows it. While she wants to change she doesn't because of her love for her dad. I love how Iker stood up for her and showed her how much she is worth. Their chemistry is hot but unfortunately Iker has a secret that ends book 1 in heartbreak. I'm so excited there is no wait for book 2.
