The first painter's manual to cover such a wide variety of maritime subjects, this book by a noted artist and teacher offers invaluable instruction on portraying everything from docks and fishing villages to ships and a rocky coastline. Useful tips on perspective and reflections. 127 black-and-white illustrations; 11 illustrations in full color.
After recently moving to the coast and being exposed to the beautiful coastal landscapes, my interest ignited for seascape and coastal painting. I gathered a few books on the subject, Coggins' Marine Painter's Guide being one of them, and found that Coggins' passion for marine subjects is infectious.
This books is as much of a brief education about seafaring life as it is an art instruction book. In fact, the latter half of the book is more focused on the different types of ships, boats, docks, wharfs, and other subjects you'll find in a coastal scene than the description on how to draw them. His writing is sprinkled with insightful tips on creating a good composition and what elements and subjects you can include in your scenes.
Coggins is fantastic at breaking down complicated elements of the typical coastal scene, especially when it comes to water, waves, and reflections (elements which I am admittedly less experienced with). His advice is written clearly, and in a friendly conversational tone, which helps to put the novice artist at ease when learning new concepts.
This book will remain in my library for future reference since it contains so many useful tips for creating beautiful, dynamic coastal scenes.
