“You’re the sweetest thing at the Fair.”

After leaving the military, Todd Hudson has avoided putting down roots, living with his best friends in Hidden Creek. Entering the Summer Fair baking contest sounds like a sweet time. The cute guy he takes home the night before the competition runs away, but he hasn’t seen the last of him.

Charlie Deacon never puts himself first—in bed, at work, or in life. His rescue dog, Geri, is his only company at home. Pressured to enter the baking contest, he doesn’t expect to find the hunk he regrets ditching. The competition forbids fraternizing, but their bubbling feelings are rising to the surface.

Charlie and Todd couldn’t be more opposite, and they fit together like chocolate and caramel… but they only have a week together. When Charlie’s bullying father and Todd’s career call, can they make it work when the Fair packs up for the year?

Welcome to Hidden Creek, Texas, where the heart knows what it wants, and where true love lives happily ever after. Every Men of Hidden Creek novel can be read on its own, but keep an eye out for familiar faces around town! This book contains a naughty half-Daschund, a giant fairground prize teddy bear, and kisses hotter than fresh-baked cupcakes.

Our two men are very different, but still find common ground.
We open with an example of Charlie's bad choices, and his low self esteem, and acceptance of being taken advantage of. After that, he's more diligent, he wants to change.
Charlie, a smaller guy, with black hair and green eyes,

in his late twenties, works at the grocery store, bakes a lot for friends, is a vegan, and has a home and a rescued Dachshund.
Todd, ex-Sniper, muscled and strong,

has dirty blonde hair and blue eyes, and is back from his new job, as a Military Consultant for films, for a rest, and stays with his buddy and his wife. They were in the service together, but Vazquez is now doing well in his wheelchair. Vazquez and Pam encourage him to join the baking contest at the Summer Fair in Hidden Creek. Baking has always calmed Todd's edginess.

We see as violent confrontation at the grocery, where Todd settles the event, and then the guys, Todd and Charlie, meet again at the gay club, and go home for some sexy fun.

Once again at the contest, the baking begins. We see good and bad folks for the judging, but everyone continues forward, and bakes up delicious food. Charlie's choices are vegan, of course.
Contest rules about fraternizing are putting a crimp in their new relationship, and Charlie is at odds with himself. Todd is more staunch and isn't afraid of the rule.

So, obstacles appear, and Charlie is a product of his Dad's verbal abuse, not internally strong, and cuts himself down, a lot. Todd sees it, and tries to encourage Charlie, and let him know that Charlie is adorable, successful, and has a future to move ahead in.

It's a tough job, because Charlie's issues are deep. But, their feelings are real, and escalate, and Todd is super about building Charlie's self esteem. Each man does need what the other can provide. Todd gives Charlie strength and optimism, while Charlie gives Todd someone to take care of and care about, for his protective nature.

After the homophobic judge gets handled, our men have opportunity knocking on each of their futures.
We get an marvelous epilogue.
ENJOY !

I was super excited about picking up this one after reading the others first contribution in the Men of Hidden Creek universe. That one might just be one of my favorites, this one... not so much.

It started out slow and steady. I was all there for Charlie and Todd to fall in love. I love baking shows, so I was really onboard for the setting of this book. With that said, that's about it for what worked out for me
Charlies insecurities and inability to communicate really bothered me. If the author had described his feelings better for the reader, maybe it had worked but as it was, we had to guess as much as poor Todd where Charlie was coming from. The worst part though, were the villains. They were extremely one sided, only there to be just villains.

Just ehh for me, I really liked Todd but Charlie was so negative I couldn’t handle it. Todd had to push so hard I felt bad for him and this was all in a span of a week so like come on!

5/10 wouldn’t recommend

Rise is my first book by the author, but definitely won't be my last. It was enjoyable and full of sweetness, both in romance and in the mouthwatering descriptions of food - especially those cupcakes! After Charlie ran away from his night with the Todd (legitimate rescue dog reasons I might add), it kept me invested when they met again the next day for the week-long amateur baking contest. Charlie and Todd face a few obstacles while they're in the contest, most notably Charlie's own insecurities over how anyone could want him, and the rule regarding no fraternisation between contestants. Despite being a ridiculous rule (a sentiment I'm glad most characters shared), it did make for some awfully enticing sneaking around. Further, the author used it as a great backdrop to showcase Charlie's character development. With Todd's unwavering determination and understanding, Charlie is able to stand up for them in an epic showdown with the extremely unpalatable judge. His surprisingly defiant and snarky attitude in these instances was a highlight of the book!

In the author’s own words this book has “A pinch of sex, a sprinkle of heat, a drop of love.” This was my first read by this author, but I definitely enjoyed it so it won’t be my last. It involves two men, one a kind-hearted twink with a love of baking deserts who never puts himself first and the other an ex-military, muscular man always on the go for his job who also has a passion for baking. What happens when the one-night stand you ran out on, for legitimate reasons, turns out to be a contestant in the same baking competition you are entered in? Will Todd and Charlie be able to abide by the rules of the competition and not fraternize, or will the heat simmering between them become too hot for the kitchen? Todd is the perfect match for Charlie and they are just what the other needs to balance out their souls. And watching Charlie be brave enough to stand up for himself and those he loves was awesome. Definitely check out this sweet story based on the fabled Hidden Creek for yourself.

* AUDIOBOOK REVIEW *

This series is becoming one of my favourites, it’s sweet and very enjoyable. The authors has built a world with wonderful characters.
Charlie and Todd has very different personalities but the good chemistry between them is there from the beginning. I love how Charlie develop in to a stronger person with Todd by his side.

No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
Lots of good dialogues
Sweet love growing between the two men....

Narrator:
Clear pronunciation and read with feelings. This narrator has grown on me, not that I disliked him before but now I really love listening to him.

I love hidden Creek and every season there is 1 book that seems to not quite make it to the standards of the others. although I loved this author last season I felt something was missing from this story.

it was still a great listen and I am glad I read/listened to it as you can't go wrong with Hidden. Creek.

Rise

This was cute. I love cooking shows so a book where the MCs fall in love during a week long cooking contest sounded perfect. I loved how Todd helped Charlie break the awful cycle of putting other’s needs/wants first and helped build his self confidence. So wonderful to see a supportive partner like that. I’ll be looking at other titles from this author.

Hidden Creek has a way of bringing unlikely pairs together and making it stick. Todd and Charlie seem like complete opposites, but their love of baking and their insecurities are two things that unite them. This was a sweet story that had some great moments and a public shaming that's well-deserved. And with all the sweetness you can handle, Todd and Charlie are another nice addition to the Hidden Creek family.

Baking definitely rules this story. It was all the detail and explaining so much of the process, flavor combinations, and dough lamination that dragged the story out far too long in many places. It fit, but it was just too much. Some of it was repetition and very little of those descriptions actually added to the story or the enjoyment of their competition. It pulled focus from the couple that mattered. Baking also played a huge role in the fairy godmother solution that solved every problem for their relationship, location difficulties, professional situation, and story wrap-up. It was nice, but it was far too simple for just how many things it covered.

Todd and Charlie together were sometimes sweet, sometimes frustrating. They both really had insecurities and with Todd they came out with his constant second-guessing and doubting and emotional lows in response to Charlie's actions and he came across as very juvenile. Feelings and reactions that I would expect from a high school kid rather than a grown man with his life experiences were jarring to the more confident man we caught mere glimpses of.

For Charlie it was almost a Jekyll/Hyde situation where he was painfully insecure in some moments and then a fierce mama bear in others. Both sides spoke to his upbringing but there was no real evolution there either, just a short phone conversation that was supposed to show his new backbone to the man who pretty much destroyed his self-confidence up to this point. His new-found strength wasn't fully believable and seemed far too quickly achieved considering all the upheaval his life had gone through.

One thing that also bothered me was the insistence that they couldn't wait a week to pursue something. And really, it wasn't even a full week either. Where there could have been a gradual build of respect, admiration, appreciation, etc. it was a constant push/pull with a demand for immediate emotional answers to their attraction, relationship status, romantic secrecy, and competition rules. The conflict between them could have had a better balance between the relationship and the competition.

But the sweet moments were so fantastically tender and adorable that it nearly makes up for the more frustrating parts. I really enjoyed when they were open about their feelings and desires. The moments when Charlie stood up for others were pretty powerful because he was able to say things that were so truthful, so righteous, and they were also all the things that should have been said in his defense. If there had been a bit of internalization of his moments of strength where he saw that he could be his own champion I would have been so incredibly pleased. Ending the story where it did was a little rushed in terms of timeline, but very perfect for the Todd and Charlie and fit with the happy feeling of the overall story.

I really love those underdog stories, and this is kind of one of those. One of the MCs is constantly being put down or treated badly. Treated like a doormat. But once he realizes he's not alone and truly loved by people, he gains more confidence in himself and stands proud. And refuses to be a doormat again. I love it.
Charlie was fed up with being used by his boss at work. But what could he do? He needed the work and didn't have anywhere else to go right now. He goes to a bar to decompress, only to be used by a prick who left him to go off with someone else for the night. And of course, it stung. The highlight of his day was when a coworker suggested he enter the summer fair baking contest and seeing a beautiful blue eyed man staring at him at work. First, he was nervous but his manners kicked in and he helped Todd find what he needed. All the while, both men were nervous and wanted to give out their number to the other but was afraid to. But meeting up again for the bake off, and Todd is determined to make his feelings known. They start to get to know each other but Todd realizes Charlie is very insecure about himself and keeps putting himself down and Todd doesn't want to hear it. He wants Charlie to see what he sees. A smart, sexy, wonderful man. But as the competition goes on, it's obvious one of the judges is homophobic and rude as can be to all the contestants. Belittling them and being mean. Enforcing the rules that no one shall fraternize just to be mean. But Charlie is had enough and finally put the main his place saying he wouldn't even speak to Todd until the contest was over to keep the man from being an ass. Todd's not happy, but when he realizes Charlie isn't as well, he tries to trust that Charlie knows what he's doing. But it's hard when the guy won't stop. And the other competitor is cheating and the favorite of the asshole judge. Hopefully, they can get through this.
Charlie is definitely my favorite in this book. I wanted to smack everyone in this book who tried to hurt him. He's such a sweet guy. But his insecurities from being constantly put down has left him quiet and not trusting and extremely hard on himself. I know there are people out there who say that you need to love yourself first or believe in yourself first before anyone else can, but when you've been so low, it's hard. And people don't understand how much kindness and love help boost someone to make them love themselves. When your head is full of constant negative thoughts, sometimes it takes someone to push you in a different direction. Most times it does. To help you see that there is something in you that is worthy and that someone likes. And it makes all the difference in the world. And that was the case with Todd and Charlie. Todd gave Charlie that boost he needed. Even if it was just a smile or a kind word. He showed how proud he was when Charlie stood up for himself which made Charlie stand taller.
It's a beautiful story. And I loved it.

Rise was the perfect combination of charming and sweet. I fell in love with MC Todd right away. I struggled with Charlie in the beginning, but only because I worried about him putting himself in harmful situations. After one phone call he received however, it made perfect sense why his reactions to certain people and situations were the way they were.

Hidden Creek came even more alive to me in this book, and now I want to go back and start where it all began in season one. Each story is unique, but the authors have done a fantastic job keeping with the overall theme and even weaving past characters seamlessly in their own stories.

Yes, you can pick any book in Season four and read it without being lost. I have enjoyed each one so much! This has been my favorite though. It just struck some chords in my soul. This was also my first read by J. Hayden Bailey, but most definitely not my last.

Of course Nick Russo did an excellent job bringing the characters to life, as always. Nothing but Love love love!😍

Such a wonderful addition to the Hidden Creek series. Reading Charlie and Todd is simultaneously completely adorable and frustrating with how little Charlie thinks of himself.
A baking competition at the local Summer Fair brings together two men who are living lonely lives and yearn for something more. Baking is their outlet and the perfect way to decompress. Charlie is vegan and has been cooking for himself for years, currently stuck in his job at the local food market working long hours and no real friends to speak of. Todd is ex military and works on films shoots to help with the military knowledge. On his down time he stays with his best friends and bakes but wonders is he can ever have that special someone for himself.
Instant attraction means the men hit it off in their own stumbling ways. However, rules dictate that competitors must not fraternise and with one judge really on their case, Charlie is paranoid that they keep their friendship. There's a lot of back and forth between them as they go one step forward and two steps back. Reading Todd giving Charlie the care and attention he is in dire need of is wonderful and it gives Todd a purpose and his own person to love. The baking contest is a lot of fun with some real quirky characters, including the judges. By the end, you get a true sense of community and how the people really can come together, even those you never really thought about as friends.
Such a wonderful story that drew me in and I love both of the characters and the friends that they make. A recommended read for me! Excited for #6 in the series.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

This 5th book in this season of Men of Hidden Creek was a tasty treat (pun intended!) Charlie is a grocery store ass’t manager who suffers from a terrible self-image and almost no self-confidence despite being capable and kind. Todd is a former military sniper who currently works as a military consultant on movies yet feels like there is a something important missing in his life. Both men find comfort and solace in baking. Enter the baking contest at the Summer Fair. (The Summer Fair has been a constant throughout the series.)

Charlie and Todd hook up the night before the baking contest but Charlie rushes out before saying goodbye or getting Todd’s phone number. Todd is hurt and confused so imagine his surprise when they find themselves face to face at the baking contest site. They both are successful in the first round but there’s a problem. One of the contest rules is no fraternization between the contestants. This creates a problem in their budding relationship.

I loved the whole idea of the baking contest and it made the read so different and enjoyable. The book’s main antagonist is an unfortunately familiar face from a previous season of Hidden Creek (no spoilers!) who I’ve no doubt every reader will want to throat punch, especially if you remember them.

Charlie’s self doubt and sabotaging behavior does get a bit old and whiny after a while. There were points where I just wanted to shout at him to open his eyes and pay attention. But for the most part the book was a fun read and the ending was sweet.

Word of advice: Don’t read the book when you are hungry!!

Rise, J Hayden Bailey's contribution to the fourth season of Hidden Creek, is a great read.

When we meet Charlie, he's had a hookup that goes wrong. Meanwhile, Todd's in town for a quick visit with his former army friend. Soon these two end up competing in a baking contest.

There are some great aspects to the baking contest. My favorite being that Todd bakes to calm himself, to take his mind off his problems. There's also an arrogant contestant and a no fraternization rule, which guides the conflict. People are way too serious about the rules.

Their story includes some family issues and trying to undue the effects of a lifetime of judgements and control. Charlie and Todd are so beautiful together, as Todd helps Charlie to feel safe and strong, loved and just "enough." Charlie has known a lifetime of loneliness, fear, and abandonment issues, but Todd is the one who can finally break through this pain.

My favorite quote is "It's not how you treat people who've done something for you, it's how you treat people you don't think can do anything for you." Ahh, if only everyone could realize this and live this way.

Rise is a great story of learning to stand up for oneself, of letting go of the past and moving forward. J Hayden Bailey wonderfully captures the small town charm of Hidden Creek. It's positively as sweet and delicious as the baked goods are. Definitely check this one out when you're in the mood for inspiration; for someone to overcome their self-consciousness.

This is a new to me author & I did enjoy this one. Todd is a retired military man who now consults on movies & TV shows. He is not happy with his work any longer. Charlie is an introvert who has been beaten down and feels unworthy. Todd is home after his latest consultation and meets Charlie at the store that Charlie works at. An incident at the store has Todd stepping in to help. They do end up spending the night together but Charlie leaves when for an emergency without letting Todd know. Needless to say that Todd is very upset that this happened. It turns out that they both enjoy baking and each enters a baking competition. When they come back together, Charlie explains what happens & they decide that they do like each other. One of the judges is a major homophobic POS and has made these rules for the competition that are rather ridiculous. One being no fraternization between the contestants. So this puts a damper on their budding relationship. Todd was a sweet patient individual who doesn't like Charlie putting himself down all the time. Just as he starts to come out of his shell, he gets a phone call from his POS father & he backslides. Even with some homophobic characters, a lot of self doubt, Todd is patient & slowly shows Charlie his worth and that yes they can be in love. I wanted to taste all of those yummy sounding foods/sweets.

* I was gifted an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review *

This book is a part of "Men of Hidden Creek" series but it can be read as a standalone.
It is a friends-to-lovers type of a story.

It was my first book by this author and I liked her writing style. The story is quite interesting, fast paced and sweet. It could have been a 5 star book if Charlie was different. He was mostly annoying. Sometimes insecure characters are adorable and cute, he was just irritating. After few first times when he was completely submissive to EVERYONE around him, I realized he didn't know how to stand up for himself (and didn't even try) I couldn't stand his apologies. Normally I like shy characters, but can we really call Charlie shy? He definitely didn't have a problem with finding one night stands in clubs or standing up for other people.

I liked Todd, but his attraction to Charlie was a mystery.

As much as I really like almost all books in this series (at least in this "season") this one was kind of unbelievable - baking contest was fun, teddy bear was funny, sex scenes were fine, but the whole "let's forget about our life/job and start over" took me by surprise (and not in a good way).

I like sweet stories, but this one was not for me. I didn't feel anything while reading it and I didn't see anything apart from lust.

This was a great story that was a sumptuous feast of desserts.
Todd is a a veteran and military consultant to movie sets. He suffers from stress and baking is his escape.
On a grocery run, he meets Charlie who's a manager at the grocery store and helps him out of a tough spot.
Sparks fly, but in the commotion they forgot to exchange information.
Charlie has had a love of food, cooking and baking since he became a vegan and couldn't find suitable food for himself.
Coincidentally, there's a baking competition in town and they discover they're both enrolled.
Charlie, however has been belittled by his father his whole life, and used by men only to be tossed aside.
His self-esteem is nonexistent so as a result, he simply finds it unfathomable that Todd is actually interested in him and will actually stick around.
This causes so many problems for their developing relationship and almost causes Todd to break things off.
Add in the drama of a homophobic judge and potential sabotage to the mix, and this all has Charlie running for the hills.
Todd has to be extremely patient and help him see his own worth and help him find his inner strength and fire to become the best version of himself in order for them to have their HEA.

“Spit on me,” Charlie pleaded. Todd gave him a concerned frown, like he wasn’t quite sure what to do about that. “Er, like, in your face?” Did Charlie really seem that submissive to everyone around him? He swallowed a snort and covered his mouth. “No, your hand.”

This was a refreshing read! Entertaining. Funny. Cute. I loved it. And I laughed a lot.

There’s instant attraction and sizzling chemistry, but also lots of realistic fumbling. Like in the quote above. Because who is really all that suave? Especially with a new relationship.

The relationship felt so real and Charlie and Todd are endearing in their own ways. They’re also great contrasts with Charlie being unsure of himself and Todd being so straightforward and honest. Any time there’s miscommunication or tension, it’s resolved quickly and each of those moments adds to the relationship and overarching story.

The premise - a local town baking competition - was perfect. It’s a simple but well written story driven by the dialogue and characters. My favorite!

I never felt like this book dragged on and I almost read it in one sitting (darn work). I thought it was that good and I plan to read this author’s backlist.

This can definitely be read as a stand-alone. Enjoy this lovely story!

I enjoyed this sweet story, although I must admit that Charlie's continual apologistic attitude grew tiring. It also seemed a little unrealistic that he would change so suddenly. That said, I loved the way he stood up to his boss and father. It's sad when the people who should support us hold us back! The baking scenes were enjoyable, but the drama kind of fizzled out when the threat of expulsion turned out to be just that...a threat. There was a lot of build-up and suspense that turned out to be nothing. Also, Aaron was introduced as a trouble-maker, but he didn't provide much conflict. There wasn't really much true drama. Look past that, and you get a sweet, sometimes painful, story with minimal true angst. Charlie's angst is mostly self-imposed due to insecurity and low self-esteem, things only he can fix. I loved Todd and his support for Charlie, but I kind of had to wonder if he didn't have self-esteem issues too. Why else would you hang out with someone so wishy-washy and indecisive. A nice story, but I didn't feel the passion.

I received an ARC copy of this ebook via the author and have voluntarily left this honest review.

A matched baked in heaven!!

Frustratingly fun! There was so much back and forth and second-guessing throughout this whole story that I just wanted to scream "talk to each other!" "say what you really feel!!!" and I know it's easy for me to say and hard to do in real life but OMG the frustration LOL. I've got to hand it to J Hayden though, that if it wasn't so well written and crafted I wouldn't have been as invested in the characters and wouldn't be as frustrated as I had become.

While Charlie and Todd are opposites they are also so similar and want the same things in life with the same love and care everyone wants. I enjoyed their journey and the lust that seemed to be either sparking or simmering between the two. I feel they matched each other well and once they could finally communicate properly they could finally move forward how they were meant too!

I loved this story and now I need all the recipes!!! So good, deliciously sweet and wonderfully written. Another winner for Hidden Creek!!!

This was not good. I checked out 30% in.

The writing doesn't feel natural, Charlie came off as pathetic more than sympathetic. He was a bit of a stereotype, and not very interesting.

They tried to create stakes with this contest fraternization rule but there are no stakes. The stakes are a lie. It's a stupid fucking contest for fun, it doesn't matter. Who cares if you get kicked out for this stupid fucking fraternizing rule. Not like you'll die if you lose.

And it was infuriating when Charlie would continuously twist Todd's words it's irritating. He is jumping to conclusions so far removed from reality. The stupid rule was only made more stupid by Charlie latching onto it so hard

And yeah, Charlie kind of needed fixing, his self-esteem problem was kind of crippling. Good for Todd for backing away and not playing games with Charlie, forcing him to talk. Charlie doesn't play games my ass

Not to mention that the moment a character asks themselves if the manipulative homophobic asshole, potentially sociopathic, character "has a point" I check out. Too bad I already checked out of this one

And two epilogues? This book won't die.

Made me hungry for baked goods!

It’s time for the Summer Fair in Hidden Creek and that means the week long baking contest begins.

Todd is a military consultant for film and tv and relaxes by baking. When not travelling the country, he lives with friends in Hidden Creek.

Charlie is a shift manager at the local grocery store. To his detriment he always puts everyone else first and believes that a twink such as himself doesn’t deserve to be loved or looked after. He bakes so that he can satisfy his vegan sweet tooth.

Prior to the baking contest they meet at the local gay bar and get together. After checking his nanny cam to find that his rescue dog is fretting without him, Charlie rushes off whilst Todd is asleep.
When the baking contest starts the next day, Charlie and Todd find themselves competing against each other.

This is very well written with a complexity to the main characters and interesting side characters. There are some obstacles to be overcome before Todd and Charlie get their HEA. I highly recommend this sweet and salty book.

Great revisit to the Hidden Creek Universe. The big summer fair and baking competition that was present in another book was the star in this book as well. I love how the books all come together in some small way, even if the characters never interact.

In this book, Todd is on a work break and comes to Hidden Creek to visit friends before his next job. Charlie is working at the local grocery store but is so miserable (though he does a great job of putting on a happy face for everyone). They meet and have a great night together and then both (without knowing about the other) enter the baking contest.

It was cute and sweet overall. Charlie has a lot of confidence issues. Todd works to get him feeling better right away. They had an instant attraction and over the course of the week, their relationship was simultaneously slow as they worked though stuff and super fast as they fell for each other hard and quickly. I liked their journey, though.

This is another great addition to the Hidden Creek shared world. I love this world and how everything is all connected around the summer festival thing, but each author and each story has a slightly different take on it. It's really wonderful.

This is the story of Charlie and Todd. Todd is former military who is based in Hidden Creek with a friend, while he goes out and does things like assist movie directors when it comes to military matters. Then we have Charlie, who is a shy man who tends to put everyone first, forgetting that he's someone too. The guys meet, have a moment, and then discover that they are both in the baking contest in the festival, and it is totally on.

You know, I really love how Todd is so careful with Charlie and makes sure to not push him into anything. Charlie just doesn't think a whole lot of himself, and that makes starting any kind of relationship really hard, especially when he thinks that Todd is so far above him.

I just love how these two handle the obstacles that come up and how they manage to keep going.

I want to find Charlie's podcast too.

I love meeting new Hidden Creek guys. Charlie and Todd's story was a sweet one, and not just because of the baked goods. The characters were well written and seemed real, especially Todd's character. I connected a bit more with his character than Charlie's. I think because Todd was a bit more realistic. Well, Charlie's character was realistic too, because most people have some sort of insecurity. He just seemed to harp on his and not value himself, over and over and over... It was good to see him eventually grow and recognize that he deserves to love himself and to be loved.

This was a cute book that was enhanced by pets, baked goods, and familiar Hidden Creek faces. I love peeking in on known characters. I can't recall having read anything previously by this author, but I am looking forward to reading more.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and have decided to voluntarily share my honest opinion.

Lovely romance.

A lovely romance, which serves up a loveable MC with absolutely no self esteem,  and a romantic ex military guy. It's a match made in heaven, or, in this case, a match made during a bakery competition, with a few bumps along the way.

All in all, this was a book about two people who fall in love, are unsure of one another's intentions, but defeat homophobia and uncertainty to be together. The characters were interesting, believable, and strong, the writing was great, and the story kept me engaged  throughout. There are also some well written and likeable  secondary  characters present.

I'm absolutely loving this series, and, having come to it late, I was so pleased to discover that there are lots of books previous  to this one for me to read. Definitely  recommended and, I would say, can be read as a stand-alone.
