Liz was born in Texas and credits a rural upbringing in a houseful of books for her lifelong love of stories. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, she moved to New York and worked various jobs (book clerk, world’s slowest professional typist, substitute teacher) before landing a job in publishing. "Millie and the Fugitive" by Liz Ireland is about as messed-up and disjointed a novel as I have ever read. Readers deserve better from an experienced author like Liz Ireland. Plot? Well, there really isn't one, unless you consider what was the subplot for the first 2/3rds of the novel, i.e. Sam Winter's attempt to clear his brother Jess's name for a murder which Jess didn't commit. The real "plot" of the novel, such as it was, consisted of Winter clunking a couple of deputies over their heads, an action witnessed by young, beautiful Millie Lively hiding up in a tree, followed by Sam kidnaping Millie to keep her from reporting his action. The next 200 or so pages revolve around Millie and Sam's dislike for each other, then Millie falling in love with Sam and refusing to leave him even when she has clear chances for escape. Sam pursues his quest, with Millie's unwanted, unappreciated help as they try to find and capture one Darnell Weems, who is the real murderer. This novel could have been far better plotted if Sam and Millie had liked each other from the start and had a powerful comradeship of a man and his young woman working together to achieve this great goal of clearing Sam's brother of wrongdoing. As it was, the endless quarreling between Sam and Millie quickly becomes annoying and then some. Some of the scenes stretch credulity to its limits and beyond, such as Sam and Millie escaping from a burning house together while tied up. The "romance" between Sam and Millie hardly is an accurate description of their relationship, such as it was. And of course, despite the implausibility, Sam and Millie have (gratuitous) sex together, which Ireland apparently feels that readers just can't do without. So, dear reader, spare yourself a long, slogging read through a lot of arguing and animosity between a man and a woman, and find a novel to read where a man has a true love-interest and they actually work together throughout the length of the novel from the very start to accomplish some great objective.

Millie and the fugitive

I enjoy Liz Ireland's writing. Her characters in this book Millie and Sam Winters are antagonistic due to Sam kidnapping her after he escaped deputies. Sam is attempting to clear his brothers alleged murder of of the brothers wife. Sam had been on the way to prison for two years as an accomplice. Sam has the wedding band of the suspected killer. Millie is a spoiled princess who keeps Sam cautious she will turn him in during the search for Darrel the suspected murderer. The book is enjoyable as the two Millie and Sam begin to call in love.
