Rate this book
A gang of pornographers turns kidnapped women into sex slaves—and only Hawker can save them

Brenda Paulie is fresh out of law school, newly married, and recently pregnant. She’s also marked to die. In an affluent neighborhood of Detroit, three masked men burst into Brenda’s house, beat her husband senseless, and take her captive—their thirteenth victim this year. Only one man can save her: James Hawker, America’s deadliest vigilante. And when he comes to Detroit, the city will never be the same.

Hawker’s one-man crusade against organized crime has taken him into the beating heart of the nation’s pornography industry: the crumbling smogscrapers of downtown Detroit. Smut is one thing, but kidnapping is another. To save Brenda and all the other victims of vice, Hawker must infiltrate an empire of filth.

This early effort from “Doc Ford” writer Randy Wayne White transcends the action/adventure genre with solid prose and a crisp, interesting plot. Hawker, a former cop and now vigilante, is discreetly engaged by the Detroit Police to investigate a kidnapping ring that has been plaguing the city. Hawker teams up with an beautiful and apprehensive female police detective to set a trap for a the ring using a fake pornography studio sting, and predictably a relationship sparks between them. The exciting climax takes place in a replica of H. H. Holmes’ “Murder Castle” which I thought was an imaginative touch. I bought the complete 11 book series at a rummage sale and was thinking of selling them. Now I think I’ll read them first.

The Hawker series are kinda like sort of long short stories. Easy to read in one sitting. Also very fast paced, and very intense. Hard to put down once you get started. At least that’s my experience. Another Wow this one, but also a tear jerker.

Decent read!

I found this story in the Hawker series good but a tad disappointing. It felt like a great story but rushed and not fully fleshed out. All in all it was worth the read as I really like the James Hawker.

Always a fun read

This is another enjoyable book in the Hawker series. I was invested in the victims and really disliked the antagonist. It was a great book to read on the treadmill.

#7 in the Hawker series. This 1985 series entry by author Randy Wayne White writing as Carl Ramm is average for the series. At this point in his career, author White was churning out potboilers for the pulp market at the rate of 3-6 per year. Formulaic series allow him to meet the volume requirements. Hawker's backstory, motivation and methodology is consistent, and White has to be concerned mainly with variations in setting and supporting characters. His downfall has been with the female supporting character; with the location changing with each book, he has yet to figure out how to have Hawker breakup gracefully. A memorable villain in Detroit.

Hawker: Detroit Combat, book #7 in the Hawker series is another grand slam! Carl Ramm knows how to get into the action right away and keep you hooked.

Detroit Combat takes Hawker to, you guessed it, the slimy streets of Detroit, where is hired to locate a string of kidnapped women. This is the first book in the series where Ramm doesn’t waste time filling us in on the backstory of Hawker, and that’s a great welcome.

I’m a huge fan of the Hawker series, and it’s one of my favorite men’s action novels. This one was one of my favorites so far, and I’m excited to jump into the next one. Easy Five stars.

All impact action adventure. This series never disappoints. If you pick up a Hawker book, this is what action in the 80's was all about. Solid five stars.

Detroit Combat has Hawker smack dab in the middle of a kidnapping porn ring. He's in Detroit to find out where all these young girls and boys are going and who's doing it to them. It starts off with him doing a screen test for an "Art" film. He tracks down Queen Faith, a sleaze merchant who not only deals in the slave trade, but her own sick pleasures. He also picks up a female cop whom he becomes attracted to. Never a dull moment.

I liked the concept, how the story plot was, and the ending. nitpicky things were the hook for the book, finding a young pregnant(not even 1 month, would have preferred 6-9 months) kidnapped woman, I was annoyed it was resolved in the first 5 mins of the book, and not used as the basis for the whole book. I would have also liked more graphic descriptions.

Hawked in Detroit

As a Detroiter who is well aware of the sex trafficking of teens and the sexual exploitation, I can only say I wish we had more "Hawkers" to resolve these problems. It's impossible to not get engrossed in Randy White's books. He tells it likes it is! You just wish there were solutions for the problems too. E

good mystery but very violent

This series written by White has many similarities to his other books but has more violence and less attractive to me because of it. Thats why the lower rating.
