Try and Catch Me

"With her arms stretched out like a bird" a little girl runs through the field, savoring its offerings--inviting a lazy turtle for a walk, stroking a cow's soft muzzle, saying hello to the fence at the end of the field, turning three perfect cartwheels in a row.

A boy, fascinated by the girl, shies away at first. But then, intrigued by her exuberance, he asks her to go for a swim.

Children will be delighted with this little girl whose imagination runs wild. The beautiful full-color illustrations by Leonard Weisgard are as free and joyous as the text.

What a bummer! I saw this, ordered it and was so excited… but it leaves a lot to be desired. Except for the illustrations - how beautiful!

The story reminds me of the book, Play With Me, but with less purposeful direction. And this book has a little boy who calls the main character dumb and who the main character responds to in kind. And there’s talk of pretend witches, and in the end the children are friends somehow.

Not a keeper for me.

Cleanliness: see above.

**Like my reviews? Then you should follow me! Because I have hundreds more just like this one. With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

The structure felt a little all over the place. The illustrations were cute and I feel it has potential. But something is missing!
